  • newegg No compromises. High performance, high capacity, high reliability, and cutting-edge technology make up WD Black, the ideal drive for those who demand only the best.
  • newegg High performance electronics. Dual processor provides Twice the processing power to maximize performance. WD's Dynamic Cache algorithm improves performance in real time by optimizing cache allocation between reads and writes. For example, if there's an overwhelming percentage of read traffic as opposed to write traffic, the drive automatically allocates more cache for read data, which reduces congestion and improves overall drive performance.
  • newegg Rock Solid Mechanical Architecture. Enhanced reliability features help protect the drive and the data stored on it. With NoTouch Ramp Load technology, the recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit. StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations which enables consistently higher performance. (4 TB and 2 TB models only)
  • newegg The WD advantage. WD puts the hard drives through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T) prior to any product launch. This testing ensures products consistently meet the highest quality and reliability standards of the WD brand. WD also has a detailed Knowledge Base with more than 1,000 helpful articles as well as helpful software and utilities. The customer support lines have longer operational hours to ensure you get the help you need when you need it.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh failure rate

Pros: Large drive, fast, reasonable cool

Cons: 4 of 6 drives failed within 3 months, one other within 6 months

Other Thoughts: Purchased these drives for the warranty, and paid accordingly. First drive worked well in NAS. Ordered a second one...wouldn't boot. It was a gift, so past the 30 day window. RMA to WD. Replacement drive DOA. RMA again. Replacement of the replacement failed SMART. RMA for the 4th drive, finally working (for 4 months so far). The initial drive, which prompted the subsequent purchase, started throwing SMART errors at 5 months. RMA to WD. This replacement just died after 3 months. So, of 5 drives I have had in my hands, only one works now. WD initally gave the RMA drives a 6 month warranty, instead of 5 years. I complained and they gave me back the 5 years. Frankly, if I have to RMA every few months, at my shipping cost, it isn't worth it anyway. I am going to RMA the current dead drive, but I won't be putting one of these back in any NAS that I need to use daily.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Lotek, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Black drives. Given the application you are utilizing these drives for, you may be interested in working with the Red line of drives, which is intended for 24x7 operation in NAS enclosures with up to 5 bays.

1 out of 5 eggsIt worked for 6 months

Pros: when it worked it worked great

Cons: After the first six months of installing this drive I had barely used it. Only after six months i started using it and it then broke after some minor use. The first signs of it breaking was that it made a repetitive "clicking" sound, where after that I tried to use data from it, which caused my PC to utterly crash.

Other Thoughts: Now I can't even access the HDD in the BIOS. I am very frustrated and disappointed by the whole thing...

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive directly, so we are able to investigate the cause relating to the products defect.

4 out of 5 eggs*Update* Use for Archive storage only

Pros: -High capacity
-Simple Installation (What SATA isn't?)
-Standard Drive Height (IE: Will fit in any machine)
-Not Overly loud (You can tell when it spins up, but only then)
-It 'tests' fast, but I'm not sure it's as fast as they say it is.

Cons: -Not 1Tb/Platter = Slower access
-Drive likes to power down (conserve power) and/or not Spin-up until needed. (causes a delay when initially accessing of upto 5-8 seconds)

Other Thoughts: So I've had this a number of months now (enough to feel comfortable to have it house my archive data, music, etc) and as an Archive drive it's great. Lots of storage and I'll probably not Need another Archive drive for a while.

BUT...
I also wanted to use it to house my music, video, and picture archives while allowing access to them without delay. Now there's always a slight spin-up delay when you first boot a disk (from cold boot), but that should be taken care of during the boot. This drive will remain completely spun-down until you first access it. This causes a huge (in relative computer time) delay between "do this" and it actually doing it. The delay is big in Windows, but in Linux it actually causes the OS to almost lock up as it tries to mount the disk. Linux throws an access error, but shortly afterwards I get the window I was waiting on. I'm not sure how Mac OSX handles it as I can't remember at this point if I've tested that yet. Yes, I have (more than) triple boot. ;-)

I haven't done video encoding yet using this drive as a source/destination, but I think I'm going to bypass that, just use my SSD for the encoding, and then throw the file on the 4Tb drive after I've done my editing.

In summary, use this for Archive/Backup purposes Only, not for an everyday use drive.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive Storage Size, Fairly Low Cost

Pros: Worked right out of the box, 7200RPM disc speed, average transfer speed is over 100MB/s, 5 Year Warranty means that, unlike the other HDD manufacturers out there, WD is actually confident in their quality control and their product

Cons: None so far, but will update if there are any to report

Other Thoughts: Using this for storage, mainly movies and music, no stutter during play back of either. Could be cheaper, but then again, you DO get what you pay for in this world. Was a lifelong Seagate fan.....not anymore, WD has won me over

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Great speed, price was great around the holidays got 10 of them for 189 each to help complete 50TB raid for my home theater setup. The drives were OEM but packed in the factory shipping box which had them secured very well. Generally this is what has lead people to having bad experiences since Newegg is know for bad shipping practices with Hard drives. I am guessing since i ordered 10 at a time, that kept them from being wrapped in bubble wrap and loosely shipped in boxes. I have had them up 99% of the time since 12/9 and have done checks on them weekly with no drive going bad or showing issues. Set up in raid 50 crystal mark showed sustained sequential 810MB writes 1085MB reads through lsi mega raid card... So far I have been pleased with black drives. I have owned many over the years and knock on wood have had great experiences with them compared to my luck with other drives. I definitely would buy again but waiting for price to come back down from the current listing.

Cons: They do run warm but i have plenty of cooling for them in my raid enclosure.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: This drive is excellent! I was able to transfer all of my files over without any problems and it has performed at peak since I got it. The backwards compatibility from SATA III to SATA II/SATA I is great as my machine is older but I needed more space. Highly recommend!

Cons: No Cons as of yet, only had it about a month but I don't see any problems down the road.

5 out of 5 eggsBeen Great

Pros: I have 12 Black edition drives (ranging from 1TB to 4TB) and have been very happy with all of them. My advice is to sector scan with the WD software when you first get it to validate the drive. Then for normal operation put a fan blowing on them and they will make you happy! I use these for data storage so the usage is on the lower end but purchased them for the warranty.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Food for thought:

4,000,000,000 Bytes converts to 3.61TB within windows.

What happens when we hit 15 TB? Can we finally do away with this misleading marketing scale?

15,000,000,000 Bytes converts to 13.97TB
