Do you know what cables I could use from my desktop to an Acer X1240 projector? Can I use HDMI, VGA (like a monitor. I want to use this projector for presentations from a desktop. I can configure the desktop however I need to.

a very good question... it only has 4 types of inputs 2 vga (like the the monitor [blue]) 1 RCA input (yellow like the regular video) and a micro usb access - this one i have not used and am not sure if its a video input. It lacks the DVI, HDMI or any newer connections so you'd have to be resigned to the old'school conections. 
on the other hand its very bright (lumens are excellent) and its dirt cheep) - at least it was for me as i got it on black friday

very quite but does heat up as any projector.

I am buying this for my son for Xmas.  Is it easy to use?  Does it hook up to your computer w/ a USB?

USB isn't a medium for Video commonly, so no. It connects to a PC using D-Sub (aka VGA, the Blue port),  Composite (yellow single pin) with 3.5mm audio jack (green, headphone sized jack) as far as I can remember. If his PC has VGA, you're fine because it comes with a cable. If not, you'll need an adapter. VGA to DVI or VGA to HDMI. Again, if your son is somewhat tech savvy, he should be fine. And I feel it's easy to use.

No, It doesn't come with a projector screen. But it is a great projector for the price. We use a light colored wall as screen and works great for us.

Does using this in 120hz mode reduce the lamp life?

While I can't say for sure, as an engineer I would say no, the refresh rate is related to the DLP technology and not the lamp which solely serves as a back light to project the image. Regardless of the image it projects the light provides the same amount of light. Eco mode which slightly reduces the brightness would have an effect being the lamp isn't running at max capacity.

Hi ...concerning the Acer x1240 projector. I see that it has a USB plug listed under connectivity and it shows it in the rear view photo of the projector too. My question is can the projector receive and project an image stored on a USB memory stick? OK...sorry...but one more question. One of the reviewers for this projector said that he was able to get 1080p resolution from this unit by using a digital (HDMI) to analog converter. Has anyone else tried this and if so what happened? Thank you for the help. JM

On the video capabilities: I use a HDMI to VGA+Audio adapter so I can run a longer cable length without quality loss. The projector has an onboard processor that will crop and resize resolutions higher than it's native 1024x768 (see pg 49 of the manual), no HDMI to VGA adapter required. However 1024x768 is the highest resolution that can do 120Hz/3D.

What are the contents of the package? Does it come with a carrying case etc?

The product comes with it's own soft side carrying case.  The included paper manual is only a one page "how to setup guide" but  there is a full manual on the included CD.   It does come with an included VGA cable of about 3 feet long and a power cable.   Very nice projector for the money.   Very bright and crisp.

what is the wattage needed for this model? need to buy portable generator for its use

Unfortunately, I bought this as a gift so I do not have access to it but according to my research online this should be 240 watts.

Lumins = what are the color lumins rating or #?

I don't have a way to measure but in pitch black, everything is bright and clear. Low-level lighting, still fine. Full lights, and it doesn't perform as well as you'd expect. This is like a upper-lower class projector and is a business projector so I wouldn't expect stellar performance. I just use it for casual movie watching so I don't need an incredible picture. For it's price, I definitely recommend it though.

How close can you place the projector to the screen and although unusual to ask...how small a picture can you produce? Secondly is this a short throw projector?

This is not a short throw projector, however it does have significant magnification. I have mine about 12 feet away, with a minimum screen size of about 110 inches, and a max screen size approaching 200 inches.
