3 out of 5 eggsLimited Compatability

Pros: Very lightweight and slim. Does not require an AC adapter or extra cords. Has good refresh rate. The 11ms GTG time is definitely not for gaming, but there are no ghosting issues. Worked great on an HM87 intel chipset laptop.

Cons: ONLY works with certain motherboards and OSes. I purchased one thinking I could plugin to a server that was not connected to a monitor. The software would not install on Server 2008 R2 as it was 'unsupported' I tried using the monitor with 3 other desktops running windows 7 64 bit and the program would install but would not find the USB display due to 'hardware incompatibility'

Other Thoughts: Very good ultra portable display. Seems to like working with Laptops more than desktops, although it could be just hardware purchased in the last 2 years that it works with.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of Universal Serial Bus to be universal? The only thing I can think of is some kind of advanced command only supported by USB 3.0 though.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Backbite,

Yes, this is a portable monitor which is designed to be used with laptops with Windows OS (not server OSes). For product support, please reach out to me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include case#3663047 in the subject line. Also, please provide me the serial number of your unit. 4 out of 5 eggsAlmost awesome!

Pros: This is a great, light weight and super portable monitor to have a round. It makes a nice secondary screen. The resolution is good enough to use with many laptops.

Cons: First off, the cable they provide isn't very long and it is very stiff. After reading the other reviews, I bought a USB 3.0 cable when I bought this... I'd say it's necessary.

Second, I'd say if they have a higher resolution available, get that model. It's not that this one is bad, because it's really ok if you're coming from, say an older laptop. I'm just spoiled with other devices that have high resolution, super-amoled or retina displays.

Third, I hope the marketing & development teams of ASUS read these. This is where the "Almost awesome" comes in-
1) If you added either a mini-HDMI or mini-Display Port on this, so it could be a primary monitor (recognized on boot, no addition software required to use).
2) Make this a touch screen!! Like many folks now, I'm so used to tablets and smartphones (all OS flavors)... I just want to touch the screen!... Mouse & keyboard are so yesteryear!!

2 out of 5 eggsnot a great connector

Pros: small and light, comes with own protective case

Cons: The connector is constantly coming out and turning off the screen, even after I learned not to move the computer or screen after connected. even if another wire bumps the wire or nothing moves at all that I know of the connection can be lost. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought this. Also sometimes I have a problem with turning it on after it's been connected. but this could be a software issue. also the resolution isn't great.

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointed - Had potential

Pros: Thin profile, solid case (frame and back), very light.

Cons: Had bad pixel.
Very flimsy and unstable when you use the case as a stand. Case/stand takes 11inches of desk/table space negating the advantages of the nice thin profile. You might want to get one of the iPad or other stands if you are getting one of these.

Unlike my AOC, this screen does not have the DisplayLink software and driver built in, so you have to load from CD or download from Web site.

Support only available form Taiwan, so if you need help it will cost you an international +886 call.

Other Thoughts: unfortunately I am boxing this back up to return and going back to my much thinker, more expensive AOC screen with a lower resolution but does work.

4 out of 5 eggsAWESOME product.

Pros: Absolutely awesome. Bought this for use with a Mini-ITX portable build, works great. Response time is a non issue. No ghosting, plays FPS games fine.

Cons: That being said, the neat little carrying case that is supposed to double as a stand, does not work very well as a stand. Typically have to prop it up against something else, which is kind of disappointing.

Also, listen to the other reviews. The USB3 cable is laughably short, and falls out relatively easy. Pick up a longer cable at point of purchase. Otherwise you're just going to have to use the monitor uncomfortably for 4-7 business days, as you order a new cable immediately after you see the one Asus included.

So I hate doing it, but i'm docking an egg for the cheapo stand and included cable.

Other Thoughts: If you need a mobile desktop solution, this should be in your cart.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome. Despite what one person said works on 8.1 first try.

Pros: Awesome device opens the door to all kinds of interesting mod ideas. You do need to have your computers Display driver installed for it to work right. as well as the driver it comes with.

Cons: The cable is a little over 2ft, could be longer.

Other Thoughts: Would recommend 100% awesome for the price.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Can be used as a primary monitor (see Other thoughts).
Fits easily in a backpack.

Cons: The USB cable is really really short and flimsy. Moving the screen just a bit will most likely end up disconnecting the screen.

Other Thoughts: My cat killed my laptop by peeing on it and I needed something to replace it. Since laptops are overpriced, I decided to built a mini-itx computer (something that could fit in a backpack). Because any decent monitor these days is above 20 inches, this was pretty much my only option (turns out there's a 1920x1080 version of this screen but Newegg doesnt sell it). I don't know why Asus didnt go with hdmi instead of usb3 but after installing the software on my computer, I can use this screen as my primary display which is all I wanted. The response time is a bit high, but I'm only planning on working in 3ds Max/Source sdk. I really wouldn't recomment playing multiplayer shooters on this.

-1 star for the flimsy/short usb3 cable
-1 star for not providing a decent stand

3 out of 5 eggsCool device, serious flaws

Pros: *Portable
*Lightweight
*Instant-On Power On/Off
*Automatic orientation & light adjustment
*1366x768 - Plenty good for on-the-go use
*Fast response on regular usage
*Nice travel case

Cons: *Terrible USB 3.0 cable that's included; can barely get portrait orientation from plugging into the side of my laptop. Laughably short, had to use one of my USB 3.0 hub cables for better length. Very loose connection on device - budging it slightly causes it to disconnect.

*It is NOT plug & play. Expect to install the drivers on any pc you use. What Asus fails to mention in the product description, unless you do in-depth research, is that the MB168B and the + model use DisplayLink technology with their graphics drivers. If you happen to use any j5 products, or any products that rely on Magic Control Technology, the drivers conflict and the device is useless (unless you decide to use it over the j5 product).

*Upon CD driver installation, it crashed my computer to a BSOD state. Had to do a system restore and linked it down to the driver conflict.

Other Thoughts: *Not plug & play via USB - one egg.

*Terrible drivers & compatibility with other products - one egg.

*Had excellent shipping @ regular rate. Retail box came inside a box, which was inside another box filled with padding. 10/10 on shipping.

*Nice 1366x768 screen, unless you are viewing it on a slight angle of any sorts. Have to be dead-straight for screen to look good.

The device is still overall a good product, but ASUS could have spent a bit more time on it. Still worth picking up if you need something for on-the-go and don't have any Magic Control devices.

4 out of 5 eggsNeat.

Pros: Super lightweight, thin as can be. Very bright screen, picture looks crisp (for a 16" 1366x768 monitor that is.) Response time is below ideal, but no worse than trying to game on a TV. Completely doable.

Cons: The cable it comes with is laughably short. Maybe fine for a laptop, trying to use this with a desktop and i have to set the screen ontop of the tower to use it.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Display, Poor Cable.

Pros: Display is Crisp, Brighter than i could have expected, responsive, and very light weight

Cons: The Cable that comes with the unit is quite poor, its not really long enough for effective monitor positioning, and if you move it at all it falls out of the display, i since bought a third party cable and it works great.

Other Thoughts: Overall the tablet was a great buy, it is very helpful for on the go, but if you buy one grab a third party micro usb 3.0 to USB 3.0 cable.
