5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value IPS monitor

Pros: This monitor has none of the viewing angle problems that TN panels have. There is some loss of brightness when viewing the screen at extreme angles, but no noticeable tint shift.

The stand on this monitor (as with most Dell ultrasharp monitors) has fantastic build quality; most other manufacturers cut costs with cheap, flimsy stands that only have tilt adjustment; this stand has virtually no wobble and has height, tilt, pivot, and rotation adjustments (few other monitors can switch to portrait mode like this can with the stock stand).

The colors are also very good for a monitor of this price, and the contrast is a lot better than many of the newer LED backlit monitors.

Also, the matte coating on the screen doesn't reflect much, so you can use the monitor in a lit room unlike the seeming majority of monitors on the market that have glossy screens.

Cons: Mine has a little bit of backlight bleed in the lower left center edge of the screen, but it is only noticeable with a completely black background.

The monitor buttons on the right side are very easy to hit accidentally when adjusting the tilt of the monitor, but overall the buttons are pretty intuitive to use (unlike with many other monitors).

There is only 1 digital input which can be annoying if you have multiple digital devices; the issue isn't so much that it has no HDMI in (since you can buy an hdmi to DVI cable for under $5), but rather that you only have 1 digital output, so if you want to hook up 2 inputs simultaneously you have to use one analog input.

There is a small amount more ghosting, but nothing noticeable to me while gaming.

The backlight is a CFL instead of LED, but this really isn't an issue.

Other Thoughts: Others have stated that text looks "glittery;" I honestly have no clue what they are referring to as text looks completely fine on this monitor and appears just about the same as on all of my other displays.

Unlike with previous Dell Ultrasharp monitors, the pivot on this stand actually works. Previous stands for some of their lighter ultrasharp monitors did not have enough friction on the base of the stand, so it was impossible to actually pivot the monitor using the pivot function because the base of the stand itself would turn with the monitor. With this stand, the base remains stationary and only the arm of the stand pivots as it should.

5 out of 5 eggsI'll never go back to a TN panel

Pros: Quality IPS panel. OSD menu is very easy to use, even in the dark. After calibration, colors are very good, movies and games I've watched and played a million times are like playing it for the first time again. It's hard to express how good this looks.

Thin bezel, no overly distracting lights, DisplayPort.

Cons: No HDMI? But I knew this when buying it. I wanted DP anyway.

Other Thoughts: Please only consider reviews from verified buyers. I have this monitor, text is not hard to read at all (maybe easier due to nice contrast ratio) and the AG coating is hardly noticeable.

5 out of 5 eggsFabulous portrait mode monitor

Pros: I had two Samsung CRTs, which are high-res compared to most of the new flat screen monitors. They are at least twelve years old, and one didn't survive long after a recent move.

It was time to move into LCD-land. After much googling, I finally decided on this monitor, and I was specifically looking for one I could use in portrait mode.

The "glittery fonts" comment was worrisome, but there were extensive comments on the Dell site by customers.

There's no glittery anti-glare coating. I have a warm light CFL at about a 20 degree angle on this slightly tilted (up, it adjusts) monitor. The video card is an ATI Radeon 4380.

A surprising number of web sites work well in portrait mode. For the NYT, I'm used to scrolling down the middle, then I move to the left and scroll down for the selected list of articles per section. That's what I've always done cos I make my fonts bigger due to old peepers. Still works, and when I click on an article, it's on the left, and it works great

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: WSJ articles work great. Windbloze Exploder shows a heeeuge number of files at one shot. I hate Windbloze.

I need another one of these, my Samsung looks like poop now.

The pixels are .20 apart for the Samsung, this monitor is around .26 which is actually very good. Anyone know if there's a different pitch vertically versus horizontally?

I'm running with the defaults, albeit I used the install disk to get the monitor's native 1080 resolution into my ATI Catalyst Control Center.

An iPhone can tell in which direction it is turned, so too could the OSD, but it doesn't. I can live with turning my head (or the monitor) sideways the few times I'll need to access the Menu.

The user guide says it will automatically adjust itself over the life of the monitor to handle CFL degrading. And that it has an automatic feature to undo most "burn in" imaging problems.

It has four basic preset modes available in addition to manual adjustment, but all relate to video or pictures. Text

2 out of 5 eggsGood and bad

Pros: Photos look great on this monitor. It comes with a decent stand on which it can be rotated for a portrait view.

Cons: Reading text on this monitor quickly becomes unbearable due to the glittery surface coating applied, which makes the edges of the fonts sparkle. Clear Type does not help with this problem.

Other Thoughts: It is unfortunate that a nice bargain IPS monitor is ruined by a glittery anti-glare coating.

5 out of 5 eggsActually 1920x1080

Pros: Sorry, this isn't really a review -- according to Dell's site, this is 1920x1080, not 1920x1200. I'm sure it's a brilliant monitor -- Dell's IPS monitors are universally fantastic in my experience.

Cons: Not x1200.
