5 out of 5 eggsGreat Headset

Pros: I worked in tech support for almost 2 years.. never had a problem with this headset and I have been using this headset for about 3-4 years. The people who complain that the item broke before it even was used should have asked for a replacement. I love this headset and I use it for gaming.

Cons: only issue I have with it is that the sound is so good that I can't hear if someone is talking to me in my room or apartment.

Other Thoughts: This is a great headset if your going to use it for gaming, trust me on this one because I play in leagues before and people think your either hacking or your not legit. I just have a good headset and that's how I know where exactly you are located.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty dang good gaming headset

Pros: Great sound quality.
Can get really loud without cracking audio
The mixamp does more than i personally need it do, but it lets me do just about anything from inputting sound from other devices to outputting the audio i hear into another device.
Very comfortable headset on my ears, covers them completely.
I can still hear outside noise that I need to hear, but it drowns out background noises too.
When you add the mixamp to your astro a40's you get this amazing surround sound setup for gaming, I can hear people in ANY direction when I play CS:GO or any other competitive game. Even while playing standard casual games, it makes the experience feel more real.

Cons: The headset does not fit tightly on my head, so if i look up or down, it tends to slide on my head. It is still snug on my head and isnt going anywhere while i game or swiftly turn my head.
The mixamp I purchased had an uneven sound to it when moving the audio dial. Something to look for between 25%-75% audio level.

Other Thoughts: I have owned this headset going on 1 year in a few days here and this thing has been through a lot in my time of gaming honestly. It has done superb for me personally!

I used to own a pair of turtle beach's to try them out and they just did not perform well, I returned them a week later, the sound quality was not that great and i had a lot of trouble trying to get it to work right. The astro a40 has a few plugs you have to figure out, but its a plug and go setup and easy to use after you figure it out.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, But(there's a catch!)

Pros: *Great Sound (Once properly set up)
*Extremely Comfortable
*Mixamp is nice
*Very stylish

Cons: *Need a decent sound card for the PC otherwise they will sound like absolute garbage.
*High priced.
*Could be easier to set up, I had to purchase a few extra pieces in order to properly set the headphones and microphone up.

Other Thoughts: I went from having Logitech G35's to Astro A40's. The G35's were half the price, and super easy to set up and use, however the A40's sound better you will need to have a good soundcard (I had to buy a Soundblaster Z because onboard sound from Z87 Sabertooth was not good enough). Overall though, I am truly enjoying this headset. At first, I was a bit skeptical and was disappointed but after getting them set up properly and working correctly I am loving them.

Pros: Very good surround sound paired with the mixamp
Average noise canceling
Mic is good and responsive

Cons: My only gripe and this is not major but when I plug the 3.5 mm jack into my iPod, I get a popping noise that is distracting but in my sgs4 it is perfect

Other Thoughts: Very good for the money

5 out of 5 eggsA40 for PC Review

Pros: Amazing sound out of the box for PC
No need to download presets like Turtle Beach Z Sevens.
Footsteps are very clear due to the EQ and Freq.
The mixamp is amazing by itself. Can use with any headset.
The mixamp converts 5.1 to virtural 7.1 and does a decent job at it.
After downloading the Firmware for the the mic works perfect. - A lot of bad reviews about this
After Testing any headsets for the PC... this is what I ended up with

If you want to pair this headset with a sound card.. Sound Blaster Z is the way to go. You will get a small gain in sound quality and the Surround Sound 7.1 gets improved a small amount. So its not necessary to have but helps a small bit.

Cons: Due to the Freq of the headset you get less bass.

This headset is for gamers not for Cinema or Music... although it does a decent job at it.

Other Thoughts: If you want the best headset for Footstep.. this is the one.

Don't buy for music thinking its going to be amazing.

This Review is for PC.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the time

Pros: Great sound quality and comfortable fit.

Cons: The mic stopped working a week into my use of them I basically have to eat the mic in order to hear any sound out of my mic.

Other Thoughts: So all in all. It's a great headset that doesn't work properly. From what I'm seeing that is a common theme with Astro products.

2 out of 5 eggsDo Not Purchase

Pros: This review is for PC owners.

I've spent two days trying varying configurations attempting to figure out what is wrong with these headsets. I'm going to save you the trouble of trying to figure this out yourself.

As a consumer you expect that if you're spending a good sum of money for merchandise that you expect it to work correctly out of the box. Going against my better judgement after having read numerous complaints about the Astro A40 with Mixamp I decided to roll the dice.

First and foremost do not purchase the A40 headsets for the microphone. The Microphone originally produced a transistor radio quality sound and it was intended to be that way. Unfortunately, Astro does not come right out and tell you that. So if you're looking for a headset with mic to produce Youtube video commentary DO NOT purchase these. If you're curious as to how poor the microphone sound quality is do yourself a favor and search "Astro A40 mic test" on Youtube and you can hear for yourself.

Do not take the advice from others claiming that the mic quality is acceptable, or that the sound quality is great. Having read those reviews I have to wonder if those people had blown out their eardrums long ago. I've played games for a lot of years and I'm an IT professional so I know the industry well and the difference between good hardware and bad hardware. The Astro A40 with Mixamp is GARBAGE.

Padded ear cups
Option to forget the Mixamp and to plug directly into your sound card or higher quality mix amp

Cons: Cons:

The problem is the Mixamp. The headsets by themselves are fine and I would consider them to be pretty good quality when plugged directly into a sound card. But when paired with the Mixamp you get a varying degree of performance and quality issues. There is an inherent design flaw with the Mixamp though I cannot pinpoint exactly what it is. The Mixamp does not play nice with other sound devices on your PC and it will behave strangely such as not working sometimes, or certain features not working, or displaying quirky habits only after a couple of hours of use.

There have been a ton of complaints online about constant popping sounds coming from the ear cups. I discovered that the problem exists with the optical connection between the Mixamp and the sound card. I used 3 different sound cards testing the various setups. 1 of them is an older SB dating back to 2005, the other two being slightly newer with one being a SB and the other being a RealTek.

All of them have optical ports and the popping anomaly occurs with the two oldest cards only. The brand new card I bought was a Sound Blaster Z which did not have this problem. There is some kind of compatibility issue that the A40 Mixamp has with them. Yet all three cards have absolutely no sound anomalies when paired up with various other optical devices. It is something specific concerning the A40 mixamp. So if you have an older sound card I would not purchase this item or be content with just using the USB co

3 out of 5 eggsDouble Check

Pros: Out of all headsets I have ever owned, I would say Astro put together some of the nicest, sturdy, and comfortable headsets hands down. The build quality was superb. The comfort level was excellent. This product just screams hardcore professional quality. If you are looking for a quality headset for the hardcore user, this is it.

Cons: But, even thought the quality of the headset is fantastic, I had to return them. The problems I had with this headset started almost immediately. The mic quality through the MixAmp was awful, the left speaker made popping sounds, and above all the MixAmp didn't give me 7.1 surround sound.

I spent all night trying to pick my problems apart, seeing if it was somehow my error that caused these problems, but I could not find the evidence to prove it. Thus, I was left with only two options. Either the product was bad or the compatibility between my computer and the headset just wouldn't work.

For the mic quality through the MixAmp problem, I read they fixed it with some driver updates. Sadly, they didn't work for me. I had to bypass the MixAmp to have any resemblance of quality with my mic. For the left speaker popping problem, I tried many solutions, but found that the MixAmp only enjoyed the 2 USB ports on the front of my computer, not the 6 or so that go directly to my motherboard on the back.

To address the MixAmp not giving 7.1 surround sound, I thought I should split it from the rest considering this is a big problem and it is easy to miss. The problem comes from the MixAmp requiring Dolby Digital Live. Not Dolby Digital, not Realtek or any other surround sound software. It requires specifically Dolby Digital Live. So, I warn you now. If you do not have a Dolby Digital Live compatible sound card or motherboard. Or if you don't want to spend another $60+(ish) on something that is compatible, then you should steer clear from this product.

Other Thoughts: If you are a streamer. That is if you stream video or record video then this product is a dream. But if you are a streamer and you decide to buy this product, I highly advise getting a professional mic and avoid using the one on the headset. I have seen some people use the mic and it sounds just fine, but mostly I've noticed the mic quality lacks if you use the MixAmp, which to be honest, is the whole point of buying this headset.

3 out of 5 eggsHeadset great, mixamp and support not so much

Pros: the headset itself is awesome, durable, comfortable, great quality with replaceable ear muffs and mic for a reasonable price.

Cons: The mix amp is not great and in fact borders on junk compared to other software/sound card capabilities for surround.
The volume adjustment as you research will cut out one ear or another and the control for game to voice just did not work at all and would cause all to get loud or all to get fubbed together.
Their customer service is a joke on that and stopped replying when I asked for a repair to the Mixamp.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend the headset to anyone and everyone separate as I have had mine 2 years and it's still in perfect shape with no signs of fatigue and have not had to replace the ear muffs or microphone yet even though I have some sitting in my cubby eagerly awaiting. The sound beats my High end brand for music also.
Headphones = yes Mixamp = no
Customer service is like talking to temps ( at least a year ago)
