1 out of 5 eggsgorrible junk

Pros: incapable of determining any, as installing the unit caused my system to fail; I'm STILL trying to sort out what it left behind

Cons: the firmware seems to be poorly correlated to a range of operating systems, it would seem; and I'm running Win2k

Other Thoughts: any company that can't keep up quality control enough to put out a drive this bad doesn't deserve a market share; of course, it would seem that most, if not all, of the manufacturers are working in a similar fashion

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Extremely fast, quiet, and cheap.

Cons: The drivers are very hard to find (I still have yet to get them after hours of forum hopping) but they only effect the lightscribe feature as far as I know.

Other Thoughts: My older drive used to take up to 30 minutes to write 4GB to a dvd. This drive has yet to take more than 10 minutes to do the same. Quietness is not compensated for speed.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It has burned well with magnivox DVD-R disks, when you have disks that the machine likes it will burn.

Cons: I have a lot of "failed to burn" errors with HP DVD-R disks. The Magnivox DVD-R disks burn every time so far. The drive slows down to where it takes longer and longer to burn. I started getting smeared printing, I couldn't read any of it. I rebooted and it started working again. If I was buying another I would not buy this one....

Other Thoughts: Its cheap and the price says it all. Dont buy it look for another name brand. I was warned of buying this product and did it anyway. I am sorry for the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: SONY dvd burner! Great burner for the price! Works awesome!

Cons: No Problems.

Other Thoughts: Been enjoying ordering products from newegg.com for over 5 years now. Spent over $8000 dollars with newegg.com. Couldn't be happier. The few products I get that fail shortly after i use them arn't even worth the trouble to get a refund. Purchase with confidence! Newegg.com ROCKS!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap, burns everything I tried, no coasters

Cons: Flimsy disk tray. Wont read many disks that I've tried. The ide port on the back is crooked.

Other Thoughts: So far it has burned everything that I have thrown at it, but it's only been able to read less then have of the disks that I have tried to copy. The drive tray is flimsy, and the ide port on the back is crooked. It took a little bit of twisting to get the ide ribbon to fit into the port on the drive. Thankfully I didnt bend any pins.....

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality drive

Pros: Inexpensive, reads disks fine

Cons: Very difficult to find firmware for this drive. Sony does not support these drives anymore as they have been sold to Optiarc.
Did not install correctly the first or second time it was put into the tower. Came up with errors on the plug and play install.

I have had more disks not burn properly with this drive than any other one I have owned. I ordered a Pioneer drive to replace this one as it is NOT reliable enough. I have had a fail rate of about 1 out of 15 DVDs burned using this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied computer geek.

Pros: no failed burns. easy install (as most drives) Burns steady and fast. reads multiple brands of dvd/cdr/+rw discs (ie office depot. staples. vertitek. sony) people who complain about the loudness of this burner must have never had other burners, N00Bs they are. Noise level is about the same w all burners.

Cons: Doesnt come w/ LightScribe update driver/packet for windows xp. Light scribed letters sometimes come out funny. Not all fonts work great w this burner. Light Scribe CDs are on avg 20 cents more than your typical DVD/CDs

Other Thoughts: If you need light scribe update go to http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/index.aspx and choose your OS and dl the appropriate software/update. SONY/NEC probably now is better than lite-on and samsung drives. Good Value and Performance.

5 out of 5 eggsOptiarc AD-7191A - Woo Hoo!!

Pros: Nearly perfect burns with good media (I only use Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim). Never EVER saw such low PIF from Nero CD-DVD Speed Quality check before. Fast, and quiet compared to some newer drives.. Actually built for Optiarc by the Lit3-On company... <g>

Cons: Kinda loud with some disks, but not nearly as bad as my other (newer model) 20x SATA drive built by the other/same company. So, almost not a con; won't subtract a star...

Other Thoughts: You can use Lit3-On tools to update BIOS, and change the max speed from 19.5x to 19.3x, where it belongs. Find through CDFr3aks forums. Bios, speed fix will clear up lots of issues w/ this drive!! This is a Fantastic burner with top shelf media; I'm almost tempted to go back and try some M3mor3x again to see how *they'll* do...
