OEM
- Pros: Low cost. High speed.A far cry from my first 8x Dvd writer that I bought 5 years ago, for 10 times the cost of this.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: For the guy who ranted about no screws,no cable,no software and that he could get it at Staples for the same price, yet rates his knowledge as high must be dreaming. OEM means"NO ANYTHING" Thats the trade off for the low price of OEM.Checked out Staples web, this item was almost 30.00 more for the retail package.
Absolute Garbage
- Pros: Low Price, Newegg return policy.
- Cons: Having used dozens of 3500-3550 NEC drives in builds throughout the Years, I was a little dismayed when Sony took over the optical drive dept of NEC and created Optiarc. However I took a chance and ordered an AD 7170A and was very happy with it . It performed as well as the venerable NEC-3550A. I went on and installed about 6 more in systems all with good results. When the 7190A came out I figured it was just another slight speed increase and ordered one. This turned out to be a completely different drive. Flimsy, loud, and more important, USELESS. 4 bad burns out of 5. Figuring I might of just gotten a bad one I returned it for a replacement. This one was just as bad. I use only TY or Verbatim quality discs and have used many different drives this 7190 is by far the worst.
- Other Thoughts: I gathered from reading some other reviews that this drive is a rebadged Lite-On drive. I used Lite-On CD drives and Burners for years but switched over to NEC when I started having high failure rates with their DVD burners. Perhaps this expains the abysmal performance of these drives. Why couldn’t Optiarc have stuck with the NEC quality drives like they did with the AD 7170A. I’m using Pioneer 115s now with excellent results. I recommend spending a few extra Dollars and going with them.

Bad Data at 70% Into a Movie
- Pros: Passed the Nero data tests with low error rates. All looked well but....
- Cons: When I read the DVD with a different Sony drive, Nero reported massive errors for the last third of the drive. This showed up when I played the recorded movie file on a new Sony up-converting DVD player. The movie played the first 70% then started locking up. Lowering the recording speed to 8X helped but did not eliminate the problem. Using +R Ritek DVD's.
- Other Thoughts: It could be that there are some compatibility issues between this player and +R DVDs that do not exist on my older Sony burner (Sony DRU-720A). It reads and writes everything.
Still love Newegg though.
Good Quality
- Pros: Good speed, the drive feels to be of decent quality, 2MB cache, support for just about any DVD media, and it's black.
- Cons: Still could be better quality, but for the price they are fine.
- Other Thoughts: I put two of these drives in my new build. They have been great so far. They are quiet when reading/writing. I still like to use IDE for DVD drives, so that was good for my build. The drive itself as well as the tray mechanism seems to be relatively durable. Since these drives are OEM, you don't get any burning software, so keep that in mind. There are many free programs available. All in all, I think these are probably some of the best drives in the price range. I would recommend them!
DVD Drive
- Pros: Works fine, no extra hardware to have to save or throw away. Just tear off bubble wrap and install in your case.
- Cons: Haven't found any so far.
- Other Thoughts: About computer show price, including express shipping, and no parking or gas charges to pay.
