2 out of 5 eggsBad Data at 70% Into a Movie

Pros: Passed the Nero data tests with low error rates. All looked well but....

Cons: When I read the DVD with a different Sony drive, Nero reported massive errors for the last third of the drive. This showed up when I played the recorded movie file on a new Sony up-converting DVD player. The movie played the first 70% then started locking up. Lowering the recording speed to 8X helped but did not eliminate the problem. Using +R Ritek DVD's.

Other Thoughts: It could be that there are some compatibility issues between this player and +R DVDs that do not exist on my older Sony burner (Sony DRU-720A). It reads and writes everything.

Still love Newegg though.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Quality

Pros: Good speed, the drive feels to be of decent quality, 2MB cache, support for just about any DVD media, and it's black.

Cons: Still could be better quality, but for the price they are fine.

Other Thoughts: I put two of these drives in my new build. They have been great so far. They are quiet when reading/writing. I still like to use IDE for DVD drives, so that was good for my build. The drive itself as well as the tray mechanism seems to be relatively durable. Since these drives are OEM, you don't get any burning software, so keep that in mind. There are many free programs available. All in all, I think these are probably some of the best drives in the price range. I would recommend them!

5 out of 5 eggsDVD Drive

Pros: Works fine, no extra hardware to have to save or throw away. Just tear off bubble wrap and install in your case.

Cons: Haven't found any so far.

Other Thoughts: About computer show price, including express shipping, and no parking or gas charges to pay.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent OEM

Pros: Low cost, compatible for older systems and new builds both. Fairly average on noise level, seem to be sturdy and reliable so far.

Cons: Well you get what you pay for. OEM, so no hardware, software etc. (this is normal of course)
Very light, feels cheaper than most drives, but that doesn't matter too much.

Other Thoughts: With regards to some of the earlier comments, in my general experience with DVD drives, any of them can fail to burn on every media since there are so many brands on both sides. Always keep your firmware updated, especially if you are having problems. Make sure your system is optimized to run the burner at a higher speed. I normally burn with the slowest speed I can, regardless whether I can go faster or not. It has better results, unless I am in a hurry.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Over the years the price of these type of drives have hit the floor. I have been buying OEM NEC drives from Newegg for years and have yet had one to fail. I really like these drives especially for the price.

Cons: If this drive is running firmware 1.04 or less you may have trouble with certain media.

Example: At first I was unable to install my video drive for my new video card. A simple firmware upgrade to version 1.05 fixed the issue.

Other Thoughts: It does not seem that you can get the upgraded firmware from NEC America. You need to go to NEC Europe. The link is below. Upgrage all firmware with caution and read all the do's and dont's before proceeding.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat drive...

Pros: Burns quickly, quietly and reliably any brand of dvd and cd I've thrown at it. Although I've owned it less than a month, I use it often and have burned well over 70 disks with it already, and zero coasters. I updated to the latest firmware as soon as I installed it, but I do that for all my hardware.
I grabbed it when it was 21.99 and free shipping, so how can you beat that?

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works fine!

Pros: Works as expected, no issues and really inexpensive.

Cons: A little loud on spin up.

Other Thoughts: I've burnt and read both Data CDs and DVDs without issue using NERO. Obviously based on reviews of others this isn't the cream of the crop - but I just needed a cheap drive fast and this fit the bill. I only really burn disks once or twice a week, so I'm not a power user by any means, however this drive seems fine for that.

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast and Reliable

Pros: Very fast. Reads full 4.7 DVD-R in 4 minutes. Writes full 4.7 X16 in under 5 minutes.

Cons: Some air noise when at high speed.

Other Thoughts: Price and delivery excellent.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap but works

Pros: I've used plenty of these and they have good value for the money.

Cons: Failure rate is quite high. The release of a defective SATA 7190S model still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. NEC drives are not what they used to be.

Other Thoughts: These are consistently the cheapest available drives on Newegg which keeps me coming back to them, even though there are many better models out there.
