Pros: Burns DVD-Rs and DVD-DL to perfection (22 for 22 so far).
Cons: Wouldn't read disks at first (see below), and the loading tray opens forcefully so I'm worried about durability.
Other Thoughts: I got tired of replacing my plextor drives every six months so I decided to give Sony a try. I was immediately impressed how the AD7240S was able to burn DL DVDs that the plextor 880SA couldn't without errors. I even believe the DL DVDs produced by the Sony play smoother in the DVD player we use for watching TV. Unfortunately, the Sony wouldn't read any of the DVDs it created. I deleted then reinstalled the WinXP SP3 drivers, but the reading problem persisted. I went to the Optiarc website looking for updated firmware, but the latest revision listed was the one installed on my drive (ver 1.03). I downloaded it anyway and installed (reinstalled) it ot the drive and voila now I could read the disks. Bizzaro and the reason for only 4 stars. I hope this helps others.

It's Beige!!!

Pros: It's BEIGE! The only DVD-RW drive out there that is still available in Beige!!! I can remember when black drives cost 2-3 times more than beige; now you can't even hardly get them in beige.
Cons: It is SATA, if you are trying to upgrade older machine that only has ATA, you are out of luck finding a beige drive.

Working good so far ...

Pros: This drive worked great right out of the box. It's fast, doesn't make a lot of noise, or do weird things with the LED light like some of the drives seem to do these days. I have burned a few CDs and a DVD or two so far, but nothing to really put the drive through its paces. The interface is SATA, which I like, and the bezel is white, which matches my case.
Cons: I'm not sure yet if it is just they way the drive is, but it almost seems like the drive door "catches" a little bit when you open it. It might be a slight delay as the drive re-seats the optical media onto the tray before ejecting, but I'm not sure. This is not really a con, per say - just something I noticed. So far, the drive has never failed to eject or accept a new disc. I can handle a momentary pause - but it was a bit of a shocker the first time I ejected the drive door.
Other Thoughts: I didn't really want another Sony DVD-RW drive. The last one I had (IDE Sony Optiac) did great with CDs but I had a difficult time getting DVDs to playback in some DVD players. I found out later that the old drive was actually a re-badged LiteOn drive. I don't have anything against LiteOn, but I bought the drive because I thought it was a Sony. Unfortunately for me, I needed a white-faced drive, and this is the ONLY one I could find. But, the drive is working good so far, and that's really all that matters. I don't use this drive for heavy-duty applications or the like, so I'm sure it will serve me fine until I paint my case black (one of these days ...)
