4 out of 5 eggsGeneric slim drive

Pros: Fits in most mini ITX cases (e.g., Lian-LI PCQ09F, Antec ISK 300-65).
Works as designed.

Cons: Requires mini-SATA cable. This cable is included with many Lian-Li cases but is missing on cases from other vendors (Antec). Caveat emptor.
Also requires very small screws (M3 x 2mm), included with higher priced spread cases (i.e. Lian Li).

Other Thoughts: Noisy? Yes, these are noisy - the disk carrier and drive motor are on the moving tray and, as a result, are not as rigidly mounted as a full thickness drive with a fixed motor/head assembly. This results in more noise as the disk spins up. Poor quality disks and/or worn disks will vibrate more. If it reads, who cares how much noise it makes? On the other hand, if you have too much vibration the R/W error rate will go up to the point where the system gives up. This can be more of a problem with writes than reads. Use good quality R/W media - you get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 eggsGets the job done.

Pros: Serves its purpose, cheapest option.

Cons: This drive is loud, overpriced, and requires a special cable/dongle to use it in a desktop. I knew all this before buying it though.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if newegg carried some other brands of slim burners.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's Not a Slot Loader

Pros: Burns DVDs

Cons: See other thoughts

Other Thoughts: This is in response to the first review, which repeatedly refers to this drive as a "Slot Load" drive. Slot load would be the kind that loads similar to a car's in-dash CD player.

This is in fact a tray loading drive as you can see on the details page ("Load Type: Tray") and on Sony's own website.

I just wanted to clear that up since that review was voted "most helpful". I didn't want someone buying this thinking it was Slot-Load.

1 out of 5 eggsWhaaat?

Pros: None Yet.

Cons: The LOUDEST drive I have ever owned. I'm not sure it even works yet. Sounds like it's scrapping the disk too. I tried different disks and tried reseating the disks and they all sound the same.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this along with a Sandy Bridge mother board which doesn't even post yet, but before the system can even come up this drive is running extremely loud.
I'm not happy with it at all.
I've purchased a few other slim drives and have not had this kind of experience with any of them.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good slot-loading DVD drive

Pros: This is the first slot-loading DVD-burner that I have bought. It seems to work pretty well. It installed easily in my SilverStone mini-ITX case. (Screws came with the case.)

Cons: Loud whirring noise on power up. You'll need tiny screws if your case didn't come with any. It seems a little slow when reading bootable discs (e.g. Windows 7, Clonezilla)

Other Thoughts: Make sure you buy a 13 pin SATA (7 data & 6 power) and not a standard SATA cable. I forgot and had to wait a few days for mine to arrive.
