5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Durability
Quiet operation

Cons: IDE connection has no support in newest mobos. This was not an issue when purchased in 1-2008

Other Thoughts: This burner has operated flawlessly for over 5 years, both reading media and burning various formats. It automatically converts blank DVD+R DL to booktype DVD-ROM, allowing playback on even older DVD players if UDF 1.02 is used as the file format. This product deserves the highest praise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Great Price

Pros: No problems burning, pretty fast even compared to the more expensive Plextor drives. Have not had a bad one yet in over 20 of these I have purchased, can't say that about Plextor, I've had many bad drives from them recently.

Cons: None really, OEM warranty maybe, but for 30 beans you can just get a new one...

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Bought this open box so it was a steal!!!
Fast, reliable and its a brand name that I know.
Automatically bitset to DVD-ROM

Cons: Because it was open box it didn't come with install instructions, so I didn't realize that this particular drive doesn't like having a slave until after about 20 minutes of tinkering, but no biggie.

Other Thoughts: Great if you want to burn things like DVDs, CDs, XBOX 360 games, and so on

5 out of 5 eggsKing of clean burns

Pros: Clean, easily readable discs are what matter to me. This drive consistently does quality burns. The drive spins up fast and ejects smoothly. The integrated drive electronics in this device are obviously faster than any of the competition. It is detected very quickly during any burning program startup and those same electronics pump data through the unit quite fast also. The buffer on most burning programs stays noticeably fuller using this drive. Discs complete burning in less time, no matter what write speed is selected. The discs it burns spin up quickly in other drives. It's just all around a quicker and cleaner burn than the competition.

Cons: No.

Other Thoughts: The crown for best quality burner has been passed around to quite a few manufacturers over the years. Y*maha, Pl*xtor, N*C, to sort of name a few. Pioneer is the current king of clean, fast, quality burns in my opinion. You could spend a few bucks less to get something cheaper. Don't. Just like you should never buy cheap RAM, your writer should be trustworthy. Your data's life is important to you. Go with quality on this one. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 eggsGood basic writer

Pros: Good basic performance. Reads relatively fast after popping in disk. Its sturdy including the tray.
Reads most media well after updating the firmware.
Have not used it enough to make final judgement on its writing ability.

Cons: You will probably need to update the firmware. At first I thought my drive was bad cause it wasn't reading half my disks. Their website has a real recent update available(mentions that its for media compatibility)I have a feeling my ASUS writer at work is going to beat this Pioneer model that dept.

Other Thoughts: When looking for a good DVD writer I found reviews pointed me to this Pioneer model and an ASUS drive for my price range. Ended up buying the Pioneer from somewhere else cause they were out stock here at the time. Kind of wish I had just bought an ASUS model from here.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems to be one of the better drives out there right now

Pros: Decent quality & noise dampening, shorter depth, Pioneer name doesn't hurt

Cons: Definitely beige, not any where near white

Other Thoughts: This was a purchase for a friend whose drive died. I only did a firmware update & basic testing, but it seems to be in order. He's not going to work it too hard, so it may last a very long time for him. I prefer the drives NEC used to make and this seems closer to them than what NEC/Sony is making now.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Name /Good burner

Pros: Fast,Inexpensive, Easy to set up for an OEM. I'm running mine externally on Firewire hookup with External case, NO problems.
Does everything it says it will do. No coasters yet with this one. Burns a lot of different brands of DVD media with the 1.18 Firmware update.

Cons: A little noisy at High speeds, not to bad tho. The label on top covers the plastic see through area where I could see if the disc is still spinning or stopped.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg Rocks! Excellent Service guys.Thanks.

The reason I gave it a 4-star rating is because This is the second unit I received. The First unit didn't or couldn't complete a single burn. 8 coasters in a row. Just a Bad unit , I think. But Newegg as always took care of it in a hurry with a RMA # and FAST return shipping.
Next you need to go get Firmware update 1.18 from Pioneer. Need the LINK ask Pioneer support for it. They'll e-mail it to you.
I would POST it but against Product Review Guidelines of
