5 out of 5 eggsFast, fast, fast

Pros: Very fast for burning DVD's or CD's. I haven't noticed that it is very loud - seems to operate well. I have it on my desk right by my monitor, and it doesn't bother me. Great value from Sony

Cons: None yet!

Other Thoughts: I didn't need to install anything, it just worked right away with XP. Makes it great if you want to use it with multiple computers. I've also set it up on a server and mapped to it from other machines. As long as you have a fast network this works pretty well.

4 out of 5 eggssleek

Pros: Super sleek. Set it up in 5 minutes, works perfectly.

Cons: It's expensive. You pay for the brand name I suppose.

Other Thoughts: This thing looks super sleek on my desk.. I like it!

5 out of 5 eggsFast-Realiable and Great

Pros: I am very pleased with this product from Sony. I just burned 40 CD with no error what so ever.
Burning DVD-s are not problem at all. It takes any type of CD and DVD's and burn it on the Highest speed with no problem. Runs On Vista very smoothly.Oh and the firewire port works very well if you only have USB 1.1. eventhough this model don't have it.

Cons: It's a little noisy but I take that for the quality I get back.
Compare to other Burners, It's a bit overpriced.

Other Thoughts: Hm I was thinking to get an other one.

1 out of 5 eggsAnoher Sony failure

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing

Cons: My drive wouldn't burn Verbatim DVD+R DL discs at higher than 2.4x. The Sony drive I replaced burned the same discs at 8x. The 830U performed great with single layer discs, but if a drive can't burn at high speed on high quality DL media it's junk as far as I'm concerned.

3 out of 5 eggsFast, Noisy, CD-R read problems

Pros: Fast enough recording for me and reads faster on media that it will read. Mostly works with my Mac even though it lists no support on the box and OS X says it is an unsupported drive.

Cons: Seems to get confused sometimes and not write to dual layered media. Will not read older CD-R made 5 years ago while internal Pioneer DVD recorder reads them. Noisy at higher speeds.

Other Thoughts: Bought as a faster drive for my iMac but there have been a few problems that don't exist with builtin Pioneer recorder. Sony products are not as reliable as they were 30 years ago.

1 out of 5 eggsNot recommended

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Doesn't work with Linux (apparently doesn't properly code optimum power calibration): cannot append or overwrite DVD-RW media. Did not work with W2K or XP with alternative burner software which does work with other USB and EIDE burners.

Other Thoughts: SONY used to make a great DVD burner. But the 820 (which I own but don't use) and the 830 (which I returned immediately) have quirks that prevent them from working in Linux or with non-Sony windows software.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and Easy

Pros: A great drive for an older (or even newer) Mac. Plug it in and it works. I had to burn 40 copies of a homemade dvd in a hurry. This is the drive you want. It is also geared toward data backup with its 12x speed DVD-RAM.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have a feeling this will come in handy for the new backup solution by apple -- Time Machine. (announced with apple's next major OS release, Leopard) The other model with Audio/Video inputs for recording DVD's from any RCA connection looks pretty neat too.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive!

Pros: This drive is SWEET!
I hooked it up and my computers recognized it instantly. Burns DVD's and CD's like a dream. I'm using Roxio Easy Media 7.5 in my machines so I didn't load the included software. I didn't have to load it since Roxio supports it. I had originally bought an external housing for use with my existing (spare) DVD-R drive, and it didn't work with DVD's. With this Sony there is no problems at all.

Cons: None at all!

Other Thoughts: NewEgg is the BEST!
