1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT GET THIS DVD BURNER

Pros: none

Cons: this is probably the worst dvd burner i've had, its Loud as hell, and also when i open the drive, the cd holder looks like its gonna fall off anytime, when i drop a cd in there, it shakes for like at least 5 seconds till stop.

Other Thoughts: NEC's burners are not as good as they use to be, i don't know if they care about their reputation or not, they sure got none from me. they are really bad now since they merged with sony, I STRONGLY RECOMAND NOT TO BUY THIS DVD BURNER.

5 out of 5 eggsHooray for commoditization

Pros: Dirt cheap and does basically everything. Rips DVDs in 10 minutes. Compatible with every XP burning app I've tried thus far. Commonly-available G170S firmware disables region lockout. SATA cable. Compact. Black matches my case.

Cons: Doesn't do HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Or make coffee.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad that DVD writing is a solved problem now.

5 out of 5 eggsBLAM!

Pros: Everything. No coasters on DVD+ or -, Same goes for CD. Havn't upgraded the firmware and I've learned not to unless I need to. These burners are silent and fast. Everything I've burned has completed flawlessly.

Cons: NUN

Other Thoughts: I have two of these in my Lian-Li case and I couldn't ask for more.

4 out of 5 eggsNice drives

Pros: SATA 3.0 Gbps, no jumper settings required for SATA 3.0 Gbps = less cable clutter in the case.

Cons: Sometimes when I reboot my PC the drives show up as removable storage devices and sometimes they don't, i.e. the little green arrow icon show up in the lower right hand corner of the desktop as if they were removable usb or firewire drives. Any thoughts?

Other Thoughts: Bought two, couldn't find drivers for these drive on the Sony, NEC, or Sony/NEC Optiarc webpages. Win XP Pro recognizes them right away though.

4 out of 5 eggsSome problems

Pros: Nice drive that works well and is fast. Good choice if you don't have enough IDE ports.

Cons: 1 out of 3 was DOA otherwise I'd give it 5 stars.

Other Thoughts: I'd still buy another one, but I was disappointed that there was a failure.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is boring... danger

Pros: Price was right, SATA works nice, burns fine for audio, data cd/dvd and movies. Simple install, but hey, aren't they all?

Cons: Can't complain since I bought OEM and knew this, but, no included burning software. I looked for a retail boxed version at Newegg, nothing. Won't cure my current battle with heartburn.

Other Thoughts: I haven't used this drive as heavilly as I used to use a DVD/RW. I quit making backups of my DVD's long ago but have used it about 20-30 times and it's been nice, quiet and the burns were accepted fine by other devices.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly

Pros: This drive works incredibly well. But it's a DVD Drive. There's not much too it. I've had three in my computer about 6 months now, and for the first week, this was rather noisy, but is now nearly dead silent. It matches my case well because the plastic faceplate is really dark black. It is also awesomely fast while burning and reading disks compared to my old computer's drives. (That's not hard to beat however; my old one was about 7 years old and also suffered from being a piece of garbage.)

Cons: None that I can think of... It would, however, be nice if I didn't have to press the open button. I would just be able to think "open/close" and it would do it. That would be so cool!

Other Thoughts: DVD drives generally do not make good cup holders.
