Blu-ray 3D Support

ASUS supports latest Blu-ray 3D technology, but the Blu-ray playback software is subjected to change by area. Please check with your supplier for exact offers.

Attention Mac Users

  1. Please connect both USB connectors to two USB ports on your Mac for sufficient power supply.
  2. Mac OS can let you burn and play DVD.
  3. Mac OS can let you burn Blu-ray Disc, but you need the third party software to play Blu-ray title.
  4. ASUS external optical drive doesn’t support BOOTCAMP to install Windows OS

Troubleshooting

Question1

Can the DISK UTILITY recognize ASUS optical external drive? If the answer is “No”, check the question2. If the answer is “Yes”, check the question3

Question2

Does the customer connect both USB connectors to two USB ports on the Macbook? Some Macbook cannot provide sufficient power supply via just one USB port. Then check Question1 and Question3.

Question3

Did the customer  insert a disc into ASUS optical external drive? For Mac OS, you have to insert a disc into the drive first, than the disc icon will appear on the desktop

If these steps don't solve the problem, please try to collect the following information.

  1. The problem description and the screenshot, the screenshot is important for analysis
  2. The Mac model name and Mac OS version
  3. What kind of disc does the customer insert in the drive? DVD tilte/DVD+R/Blu-ray title…..?
  4. Does the customer also install Windows OS on the Mac via Boot Camp?

1 out of 5 eggsNot the usual ASUS quality

Pros: Aesthetics and the ASUS brand

Cons: Short Y cable

Other Thoughts: My Y cable didn't work out of the box, but I was able to use one from an external hard drive. As for the drive itself... it looks nice, but I am having some serious problems with it not reading discs reliably. It reads some BDs and some DVDs, but not others. The first couple of times I checked the discs just to make sure they weren't dirty, but that wasn't the issue. Maybe I got a defective drive. Is there a firmware release to help out? I checked the support website; however, there is literally nothing on the page that can help...At this point my old TEAC 8x DVD drive is doing a far better job!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk...

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: It's a piece of junk. I bought this primarily to read blurays. Now that I need it to read a DVD it won't... just keeps booping. Not recognizing DVD's of any sort... not DVD movies, not DVD plus or minus R's
doubleU tee eeF ... Sorry, it's a hunk of junk.

1 out of 5 eggsAsus costomer service

Pros: Support DVD and Blu-ray disks

Cons: No Blu-Ray software included.
Functioned well in first 3 months, but the ejection button seemed very fragile.
After 3 and and a half months, my ejection button fell off its place. I was not able to open the disk compartment. I phoned to Asus to have it repaired while the DVD combo was still on the warranty. I was told that if there was misuse of the product, it would not be covered and had to pay for the repair. I did not want to pay for the expedition of the product to Asus and risk that my product would need repair on my expense.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate your effort in posting this comment and review. I understand that after 3 months of using the eject button fell out of the unit. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. I want to help you with this issue. The reason why the technical support advised you that if there a misuse of the unit you will be charge for the repairis becaused it will fall under customer induce damage ( CID ). CID is not cover by the warrant except if you purchased an ADP or Accidental Damage Plan. If you want I can create an RMA for your unit. Just please provide me with your full name, mailing address, phone number and the serial number of the unit. FOr further assistance please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N150368397 in the subject line for your reference.

3 out of 5 eggspretty good

Pros: when the package arrives theres nothing wrong with player its aesthetically pleasing, nice player, works, until you put a disk in.

Cons: you should pay attention to the words supports and compatible on the box because thats what it is, it doesn't come with any software to actually play the disks. you have to either pay to upgrade the software it does come with or find a third party media player it took me an hour to find one.

Other Thoughts: other than that it worked fine had no other problems, this is a decent player and if you pay the upgrade it actually comes with alot of awesome extras. just wish i had a choice

4 out of 5 eggsGood Little Unit

Pros: It is small, lightweight, and the disk suite has a program to help you write certain things to disk. Although it does not have a media player in the suite, you can use VLC player for free pretty easily.

Cons: I was under the impression it also could write Blu-Ray, but that is my mistake. So I want to leave this note so that no one else makes a quick decision.

Other Thoughts: Fast shipping

3 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 woes.

Pros: When I used it with my desktop and old laptop it was fast and reliable.

Cons: The problems arise however when USB 3.0 is involved. I tried it once on my desktops USB 3.0 ports, it didn't work on them, it worked on the 2.0 ports and didn't even think about it again until 3 weeks ago. At that time I got a new laptop from work that only has USB 3.0 ports and the device wouldn't work. So I started trying new drivers, different drivers, even troubleshooting in Windows. What windows says is the USB 2.0 that is built into the drive is known to have problems with 3.0.

Other Thoughts: So now I have a drive that won't work for the express reason I bought it, to use with my work laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsIt won't play BluRay

Pros: Asus brand -??

Cons: The device does not play bluray disc. Try a number of movies, but none. It does apparently write bluray format for data. I play DVD's so it works, just it doesn't play bluray movies, video, etc.

Other Thoughts: The webpage given to install the updates for the firmware, doesn't exist anymore (if ever did). Come on!

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work on VistaSP2, no BR software

Pros: - Sleek look
- able to mount vertically via stand

Cons: - Can't get to work with Vista SP2
- Blu-Ray playback software not included

Other Thoughts: This is a nice looking drive, but I can't get it to work in Vista SP2 (which is odd, because it worked with the initial Vista install until I installed SP2 - yes, I know Vista is old, but I'm using an old license to build a computer for a kid.) Another external BD drive I have of the same form factor works fine, and this does work in a windows 7 machine I have, so I know it's not the computer or that the drive is broken.

It also doesn't come with Blu-Ray playback software, even though the disk says "BD Suite" - very misleading.

A product like this shouldn't be this difficult to use out of the box. An external optical drive should be plug in, install provided software that allows use of everything the drive is capable of, go. I would not recommend this product.
