4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: - Works well

Cons: - No included software

Other Thoughts: This drive works well as a blu-ray reader and writer but you're better off buying a non-OEM player that comes with software to play your movies. This player will not be able to play blu-rays without first purchasing a third party software.

1 out of 5 eggsWH14NS40

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: None.

Cons: Will not play blu-rays with Nero Platinum 2015 or Cyberlink PowerDVD 15. Updated every possible driver/bios. Will not update firmware. "CheckSum is mismatched. Drive will go to BOOT mode Please retry again." Going to be returning this drive unless LG comes up with a quick fix.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT GREAT GREAT

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Burns/Rips blu ray movies at great speeds.
I use dvd fab 9 and powerdvd and it works excellent
I'm able to back up my whole blu Ray collection now
Drivers were automatically detected on Windows 7
Burned A 2 hour and 10 minute in about 32 minutes
Looks great as well
1080p looks crisp as well

Cons: None I love it so far. I've only had it for about 5 days but I've got a lost of use out of it.
I guess some come DOA, but that's the only thing I've read bad about these
Also I downloaded the firmware from LG that didn't work, but as I said Windows 7 automatically installed the drivers right after I installed and turned my computer on

Other Thoughts: GREAT BUY. GOT IT ON SALE AS WELL 5 STARS

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Fine

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Burns discs, plays movies with proper software. Cheap

Cons: Can't flash the firmware, as has been reported below. Not an issue, always suspect windows based flashing programs.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Works but....

Cons: ... can't update simple firmware?

Other Thoughts: Anyone else having trouble updating firmware for this WH14NS40 model? Sticker says 9/2015 manufacture date but only came with 1.00 firmware. LG site has like 4 updates for this drive but the flash program is giving a checksum error for all of them. Same result for a 2nd drive purchased. Online chat with LG was useless. Guy basically said f/w updates are never needed. Nice price for a blu-ray burner, but they're going back unless I can figure this out.

Update: Returned both units. Never got firmware updates to work no matter the OS or system used. First time ever (ever!) not being able to update simple fw on an optical drive. What a waste of time.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely Loud

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: It seems to read discs...

Cons: It is extremely loud. I can't even use it to watch a movie because the noise is so distracting.

2 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 "CheckSum is mismatched" error

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Well it does play DVD's

Cons: Can't update firmware, Windows 7, I get a "CheckSum is mismatched" error same as others have written here. Wrote to the company and their solutions don't work. NO software so anything you save on the drive is lost in having to buy software to read commercial Bluray discs.

Other Thoughts: This is basically a blu ray burner, not player with outdated software that you can't update. for what I paid it's okay. Got it on special.

5 out of 5 eggsCheapest Blu-Ray player around!

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Why buy an expensive smart Blu-ray player when your computer is so much more powerful? Works great for playing movies, but I have yet to burn one. Even works good on an older Pentium D with 4GB ram (will be upgrading it to a Quad-Core CPU soon so they should play even better). No firmware update was needed on mine, just plug and play. EDIT: Since this review I bought some 25GB Verbatim Blu-ray discs, and they burn and play great! It's much slower than a regular DVD-R but that's expected.

Cons: Not a con of the player itself but a special program is required to play movies. Fortunately I had Nero 2014 and it can both burn and play movies. Unlike what one reviewer said you don't need an $80 program, as Nero and similar ones are around $40.

Other Thoughts: Would highly recommend if you want to watch HD movies without a TV or can hook your computer to your TV. But to really enjoy it you have to get a nice monitor and decent GPU, which I have. And as this is the older/slower model I wouldn't buy it at full price, but I got it on Black Friday for $35 so you can't beat that! Otherwise I would buy the newer one.

2 out of 5 eggsConfirmed: No successful firmware update

This review is from: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM

Pros: Works most of the time when accessing Blu-Ray Discs, and DVDs. Its only positive, really.

Cons: Haven't tried BD-R's yet. I'm sure it won't work well. Half the time, it won't successfully begin burning DVD-r discs. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. Not consistent. So I checked in to firmware updates. Same as someone else stated, three firmware updates available, but it won't actually flash it. I'll copy-n-paste one of my fellow suckers--, er, buyers' post reflecting this issue:

"Cons: The firmware that came with the drive is old. There has been 3 updates after it. When attempting to update the firmware, on two computers including Windows 7, I get a "CheckSum is mismatched" error. All the three available firmware updates on the LG site give the same error. That makes me conclude that the error isn't a result of a corrupt firmware flash file. The firmware update seems to be programed to start with checking the integrity of something on the drive, finds what the firmware programmer(s) consider to be an error and refuse to make the update."

My drive has firmware 1.00, and they have 1.03 available as of this review.

Other Thoughts: Shameful, LG. And will be the last time I purchase anything of yours.
