3 out of 5 eggsCD Exploded

Pros: Worked well and I was able to rip my Music and burn CDs.

Cons: One of my CD's exploded in the drive and all I could do is collect the shards and bits of the drive that got taken out.

Other Thoughts: Thank you Newegg for sending me a new DVD burner for free!

1 out of 5 eggsNEVER AGAIN

Pros: Great read speeds, good writes, good media compatibility

Cons: When I finally got some lightscribe media and tried to burn a label, it absolutely would not recognize it. Kept saying there was no disc in the drive and to put in a lightscribe disc with the label side down. Tried multiple brands of lightscribe media including HP and Verbatim, making sure the label side was down. no joy. Did some research and found out a firmware update might be necessary. Tried updating the firmware from what it shipped with (SB01) to the newest (SB02). Bricked my drive. It still is recognized by the BIOS and windows but will no longer read or recognize any disc whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: Samsung made a big mistake going with this rediculous 1 click firmware update program, it doesn't allow you to backup your current firmware, once you click ok on the warning popup when you run it, it automatically starts the fw upgrade without making you tell it to start, and obviously there was a serious issue with the new firmware. As it is only sold (at least by newegg) as an OEM drive, the warranty is about non existent. Now I have to purchase another optical drive. I will NOT be buying another samsung drive.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this drive

Pros: Reads and burns very well. LightScribe works.

Cons: OEM has nothing bundled with it. Make sure you have cables.

Other Thoughts: Had troubles with Vista as I was using PATA drives before this one. Worked like a champ after reinstall of the OS (pre sp1). I have found a couple passes with LightScribe give a fairly OK image.

2 out of 5 eggsOk while it lasted.

Pros: SATA. High burn speed. LightScribe. Cheap

Cons: Only Lasted about 10 months before it started failing. How it failed is weird. It would read everything but burned dual-layer dvd's. It would burn them just fine, and verify them, but after that it would not read them. At first I thought it was the discs, that they were bad burns, but they worked fine in my other two PC's. The drive would read factory pressed dual-layers fine. I think it was a problem with the laser.

Other Thoughts: This was the second samsung that I have owned. I don't think I will buy samsung again. I still have a TDK and a BenQ that are from five to nine years ago that still work. I use to have bad luck with LiteON's but they have acquired BenQ, and alot of people swear by them, so I picked up a LiteON to replace this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst product ever

Pros: none.

Cons: you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: This is nothing but a paper weight. Tried to burn DVDs and every DVD I tried failed...even after I refreshed the firmware. Stay away from this burner!!!!!
