From one of the first names in computer hardware comes an optical disc burner to make your life easier. This IDE drive burns both CD and DVD media so you can choose the disc to use based on the job at hand. Since it works with all of the popular media types, including dual layer DVD, you can organize the burns to use a minimum of discs saving you both money and space.

Works, great price.
- Pros: Great price ($23) and I caught free shipping on the unit. Fit perfectly. Recognized immediately by XP; fired right up and I'd burned the first DVD less than 6 minutes later. Not a lot of flashy logos on the front.
- Cons: OEM so it came with no paperwork or disks of any kind. But, it installed and worked perfectly with XP, and there is a manual online if you really want one.
- Other Thoughts: Wanted an inexpensive but decent burner to replace the OEM in our 5yo HP Pavilion. Didn't like the mixed reviews on other brands in this price range, but didn't want the extra expense of paying shipping. Held off my order for a day and, TA-DA! free shipping on Samsung. Great timing for me.
Samsung is the best
- Pros: always reliable, never any problems. All software recognizes. Firmware for Samsung easy to find if needed (newer media, etc) Fast burner. Well suited for what I use these and other write master series samsung burners for; Customer builds and my personal machines, nothing fancy it just gets the job done.
- Cons: zero

Great Samsung Drive
- Pros: - Worked right out of the box
- Quiet - Simple but elegant look - No issues with reading or writing different types of media - Much faster than my old LG 4X DVD burner - Already had newest firmware flashed, which is nice.
- Cons: - Wish I could find out what media will burn using higher than 16X speeds.
- Haven't tested the latency of the drive but it seems to be a little slow reading discs from the get go.
- Other Thoughts: - Just remember, 22X does not mean any disc will burn at that speed. There is no media rated for 22X. To my knowledge the highest rated media you can get is 18X and it's very hard to find. It uses certain 16X media and burns it faster than rated speed. I don't know which media is the right kind for this but my guess would be maybe high quality media such as Verbatim. Bus I don't know for sure.
- Newegg's shipping is always speedy, even in Canada. :)
Works fine
- Pros: Fast burning, Mye Windows 7 64-bit recognizes it without installing any drivers, price is right on the market
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: I have installed several of these and haven't encountered any problems. It is a mature product and has a proven track record. I use this model for my personal machine.
Best burner I've had so far!
- Pros: Writes to my old dvd-r media without ANY playback problems.
Quieter than my external LG!
When writing on '-r' media, both of my old burners would write out dvd-video with playback problems - they would all pause intermittently.
The burner that this replaced, an internal IDE circa 2001 NEC-DVR-102(IIRC) -- as well as a circa 2006 external USB LG GSA-2166D multi-drive BOTH had problems when writing dvd-r's - problems with the pausing on playback..
After trying dvd+r media, that problem went away (with the multi-drive, of course).
This drive has seemed to make my -r media useful again.
- Cons: None so far.
(But people, don't forget that this is an OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer) drive! If you need the extras like software or manual, don't get this and bash it because it didn't hold your hand. This seems to be an excellent drive so far - and it has a 1-year warranty!)
- Other Thoughts: After buying this drive and installing it (it even has a diagram for the jumpers on the top-back of the drive), I am now finding that all my old '-r' media seems to be useful again!!! And some of that media is TY-Yuden!
I'm still a little skeptical about whether or not the '-r's won't have any pausing in them, but so far they seem OK. It seems like '-r's may be a secondary media choice for me now - if the price is low enough.
I also had some problems with TDK+R (MID: ritek-f016-001) with my external LG drive.. They would only burn at 4x. With this drive, they burn at top speed!
I'm thinking that my next drive will HAVE to be a Samsung (or Toshiba - same company from what I've read)! =)
