Drive keeps disappearing

Pros: Quiet

Cons: This drive keep on disappearing while in use.
Drive is picky, it can't read some of the disk that my other drive reads without any problems.
Slow

Other Thoughts: I've been using this drive and another to rip all of my kids movies to a home server and this drive will just vanish right in the middle of a disc. If I check explorer the drive is gone.

Rebooting brings the drive back. My other SATA driive does not have that problem. Updating the firmware did not help.

The drive is also slower than my other 22x drive, this one never gets more than 8MB/s the other hits 12MB/s

Pros: None

Cons: Ordered two units and both are junk. Flashing to SB02 didn't help. Takes forever to read any disk, system has stability issues with them install. (two different) Both are now in the trash, literally. I'll stick with my trusty NEC IDE for now.

Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year

Pros: Cheapest price for a drive when purchased over 2 years ago. It worked ok for a while.

Cons: Immediately after installing this drive would not work to the specs that it is supposed to have. Any dvd that I burned above 4x turned into a coaster. I decided to live with it (my mistake). The drive worked fine at 4x speeds for about 2 years but did make quite a few coasters. Now anything I try to burn turns out a coaster no matter what program I use or how slow I have it burn. I tried updating the firmware and then did a complete system format and reinstall of everything. After the format now the drive is showing up as a cd drive in windows. Good luck with the tech support which told me (after about a week and 3 emails later) "the drive is plug and play compatible so we don't offer any drivers". Overall I suppose being able to burn at 4x speeds pretty well with very few coasters the first year makes it worth a little bit I suppose but I still feel it doesn't deserve any eggs.

Other Thoughts: When you buy something it should work up to the listed specifications or better. Newegg should definitely stop selling these drives. It seems most of the good (5 egg) reviews are people who just purchased the drive and are happy with it so far. We'll see how they feel about it in a couple years unless they are one of the few lucky ones.
