SAMSUNG USB 2.0 External BD Combo Model SE-406AB/RSBD

Pros: Small, easy to use, and comes with CyberLink software.

Cons: Requires two USB for power, but most do.

Pros: Compact size, bus powered.

Cons: Can't read discs using Mac (OS 10.7.3 Lion). Mac crashes about 30 seconds after a disc is inserted requiring a "hold down the power button" hard reset so I never got a chance to see if it would work with MakeMKV.

Note that warranty coverage is not available in Canada. I complained to Newegg and they replaced it.

Returned it thinking it must be defective, received a replacement unit that doesn't work either.

Other Thoughts: I chose to buy from Newegg.CA specifically because I thought a site with a ".CA" suffix would sell products with Canadian warranty coverage. They replaced it for me this time, but it's an issue Canadian buyers may want to consider.

Pros: Mac OS X Compatible Blu-Ray Drive, I use it with MakeMKV, and Handbrake for backing up my Blu-ray and DVD Movies to Hard Drive.

Cons: Uses two USB plugs to get enough power and my MacBook Pro only has three available so I have to disconnect something in order to use the drive.

Other Thoughts: Playstation Media Server Mac, Boxee Media Manager, are incredibly useful for streaming video over my home network. Boxee Media Manager streams to Boxee Media Player for iPad and it allows me to watch videos on my iPad that iTunes says will not work. I can also stream movies to my AppleTV but the PS3 works better with Ripped Blu-rays...

Pros: The drive itself is great. It runs fine, accesses all formats of disc, etc. If you're looking for a bare blu-ray drive and already have the software you need to run it, it's fine.

Cons: The bundled software (Cyberlink PowerDVD 9) is *C*R*A*P*. It installs several completely unnecessary services, isn't compatible with Windows 7 desktop compositing, constantly nags for "registration", etc, and to top it all off, won't even play some Blu-Ray discs. It's more adware than useful software. Do yourself a favor and don't even install it.

Pros: This is a great drive its really fast, when the watching blu-rays there is no lag or stopping, for the price it can't be beat, and it includes software from cyberlink

Cons: the software is not the best, it would be better if it shipped with the most current version of PowerDVD

Other Thoughts: Overall Amazing drive for the money

Pros: Works well.
A little bit of lag when playing Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind - but it's tolerable

Cons: The software is bloated. Only one install option installs a bunch of apps. I removed all but the main app

Other Thoughts: Anyone know what cable I can use to convert the USB cable to HDMI so I can watch this on my tv (which has all inputs except USB)

Pros: Lets me make BluRay mkv's an a Mac. Looks nice, it is very quiet, bus powered and compact.

Cons: Included dual USB cable is very short.

Other Thoughts: If your USB port has a high enough current you don't need a dual USB cable. I'm using this drive with a 2011 Mac Mini and a longer single port USB cable, and it works great.

Pros: Nice, compact design. Works perfectly in Ubuntu 10 without further configuration. I was able to easily rip blurays with MakeMKV in Ubuntu and transcode/resize with Handbrake. I did not bother going through ridiculous number of laborious steps to play it directly off the BD disc, though I am sure this would work just fine.

Cons: No pouch. Double-power cable that comes with it is a bit short.

Other Thoughts: FWIW, I have not tried any of the DVD burning features.

Pros: it works fine, no lag

Cons: software/bloatware took an eternity to load

Other Thoughts: Newegg rocks as usual, I knocked off an egg for bloated software and the live-update software would NOT work. Samsung site says "not supported drive" Oh really? The drive works fine as is so far.

Pros: Slim form factor
USB power works without issues
MakeMKV compatible

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This drive has AACS bus encryption, which is now supported by programs like MakeMKV as of version 1.6.13. The drive works well on both Mac and PC.
