Canon XTi w/lens
- Pros: Great entry level SLR. This is my first DSLR (used film SLR's for many years). It is easy to use and very fast. Gone are the days of pressing the shutter and hoping the camera will take the photo before the pose is lost. I took this to a football field and took some great pictures with stadium lights and custom white balance.
- Cons: lens that comes with this camera is low end. You'll probably want to spend some coin on a better lens fairly soon. If you have the money, buy the body, and get a 17-85mm IS lens (several hudred more, but you save a bunch on the body only camera).
- Other Thoughts: Having used point and shoot camera's, I got used to just looking at the LCD for casual photos. Can't do that with this camera. Being farily new to SLR type cameras, not sure if any of them have that ability (due to the mirror being down).
If you buy a telephoto lens, I would recommend spending the extra money on a one with image stabilization (IS designation). My previous camera had IS built in, and I miss that feature on 70mm+ shots.
Best DSLR for the Money
- Pros: Super camera. The color saturation on most of the images is out of this world, especially if you take the pictures with the sun to your back. The zoom range of the 18-55mm lens is perfect for almost everything. It goes from a wide angle to good telephoto and there is no noticable change of image quality on either end. The auto-focus is very fast and allows for very fast shooting. Battery life was better than expected and you can get cheep 1500mAh batteries that work well. The wheel just behind the shutter release button is perfect for changing shutter speeds. Noise level is low (8 out of 10 here). I took an awesome 30sec shot the other day and it came out with almost no noise. You can lock the shutter up for long exposure shots.
- Cons: The built-in flash is weak and will not illuminate a subject well past about 10 feet. Also, the full automatic (point and shoot) modes often do not let in enough light and the pictures are a little dark. Not a big deal.
- Other Thoughts: My camera came with a 1GB CF card. That works well for a day of shooting but I would recomend a larger card. I got a great deal here on Newegg on a 8GB 120x CF card. Should be here tomorrow. You can also get a remote control and use it instead of the timer. I would also recomend an external or mount flash for low light portraits.
This is the best camera I have ever owned. Thanks Newegg!

Canon Xti
- Pros: Light weight, instant on. Pictures are clear and crisp. Plenty of automatic as well as manual modes.
- Cons: The kit lens is a good starter lens.I bought the kit that came with the 28-55mm lens. By the body only if you can. purchase EF lenses, stay away from EFS if you are able. The EF lens will be able to be used on other Canon cameras where the EFS lens will not if you decide to upgrade to a higher end camera in the future.
- Other Thoughts: This a great first time SLR Camera or for the budjet minded. I wonder if i should have gone in for a few more bucks and got the XSI. It seems to a few more bells and whistles. SD, more 6.5 frames a sec.12 mega pixles. may have been worth it. All in All the XTI is still a great buy. Dont hesitate if this is the camera for your budjet.
Fantastic
- Pros: Fantastic image quality. No shutter lag like point and shoot digitals. Takes hundreds of pictures with two OEM batteries in optional OEM battery grip before recharge needed. Taken over 15,000 pictures and still very happy with this camera. If you are new to dSLR photography, you can't go wrong with camera just purchase a better lens, especially the image stabillized lenses.
- Cons: Anemic popup flash. Developed dust on sensor after year of frequent lens changes. Can't blame the camera for that though. Dust only visible when f stoop smaller than f22. The kit lens does not show the abilities of the camera. The high quality lens really let this camera capture jaw dropping pics.
- Other Thoughts: Great camera. Would recommend XTi to anyone making transition to dSLR. I highly suggest getting image stabilized lens.
Freaking Spectacular
- Pros: Fantastic array of options, brilliant image quality, and a sweet stock lens. I am deeply in love with this thing. Perfect entry-level DSLR camera!
- Cons: It didn't come with a pizza oven. :/
- Other Thoughts: I hope the XSi lives up to the XTi's memory!
