Not "just" a Point and Shoot
- Pros: On my doorstep within 36 hours of ordering. This is our third IS ELPH. Goodly number of pixels. Big LCD. Flexibility. Fast lens capable of stopping down to 2.8. 4x optical. The 890 IS is 5x but does not stop down as low. Digital zoom is actually useable. Face detection works better than earlier models. Most important, nice photos.
- Cons: This is NOT a 35mm or DSLR with awesome "L" glass, so expect some tradeoffs. On the other hand, this is not a 'simple' point and shoot, so the controls have a moderate learning curve, even it you're familiar with Canon products. There is flexibility under "P", but you're not going to get totally manual. Slightly larger/heavier than some of the others; my guess is it's the result of the 4x optics. Glass is heavy to hold and move. There might be a slight lag; it does feel a bit slower than other models, but I'm getting the same shot.
- Other Thoughts: This level of point and shoot should be considered if you want to play with your camera, if you're used to setting up a photo, if you want to incorporate a little creativity. If all you want is to pull it out of your pocket/purse and start shooting, I'd recommend the also excellent and more affordable 1100 IS. It's great at doing just that and it is a bit smaller and lighter. We have one of those in the house, too.
excellent
- Pros: 3 inch screen; 4x optical zoom; wide angle all in a compact body. It has a dial that I love the most since it let you experience the convenience once only exists on SLR's body; come with free 8GB class 4 memory card and a nice little bag;
Image quality is as excellent as usual; short flash recovery time;
- Cons: no viewfinder because you sacrifice it for big 3" screen, but people seem rarely use the viewfinder on compact camera nowadays
- Other Thoughts: Super fast shipping (I receive this in just 2 days, and another SD1100 in about 30 hours :)). Newegg made me keep coming back again and again. I don't really remember how many digital Elphs I bought from Newegg (SD600, SD1000, SD1100, SD880...), but I am fully satisfied with all of them.

Wide Lens A Plus
- Pros: The wide lens is great for any type of point and shooter. There are many options to chose from such as photo stitching. I was very impressed with the macro focus quality in which I use often for my work. Start up and photo shooting times are very quick.
- Cons: Somewhat heavier than other small point and shoot cameras out there.
Excellent Camera
- Pros: Fast and easy operation. Great Images. Batteries last a long time. Great night shots. The screen on the back is gorgeous. LOVE the wide angle lens. The wider field of view is VERY noticeable compared to other digital cameras. This comes in very handy for scenery shots and large family shots. You can literally be 5 ft from the camera and fit 15 people into the shot.
- Cons: Not as many shooting modes as my old Casio. The 10 MP is overkill, but you can set a lower resolution for most shots.
- Other Thoughts: I use to own a Casio Exilim and this is on par with the quality of that camera if not better.
Great camera, sweet deal
- Pros: This camera is the best PowerShot I've used yet. The image quality seems as good at the wonderful S50 I once had, and the weight, size, and ergonomics are all better. Image stabilization really works; a handheld 1/8 second exposure I made inadvertently (didn't realize flash was turned off) came out crisp and clear. The many scene modes are very useful, and come close to compensating for the camera's lack of full manual control (see Cons, below). Display options are numerous and useful, especially the optional grid lines, which help keep the picture level as well as a reminder of the rule of thirds. The 28mm equivalent wide angle lens is a must for anyone who does architectural or interior shooting.
- Cons: Minor quibbles: no optical viewfinder (although I found I almost never used the one my S50 had); no full manual control (although scene modes together with +/- 2-stop exposure compensation almost completely makes up for it); lack of RAW mode (although I confess I almost never used it on my S50). So it's hard to complain.
- Other Thoughts: This camera is a joy to use. The 4 gig card and nifty case that NewEgg threw in with the deal made it even sweeter.
