In the pursuit to achieve the most outstanding image resolution in the 70-300mm class, Tamron’s Anniversary lens - the SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD - utilizes an advanced optical design that features an LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized materials that prevent chromatic aberration. As a result, the SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) boasts sharper contrast and greater descriptive performance than all others in its class.

In addition, it is the first Tamron lens sporting a USD (Ultra Silent Drive), Tamron’s very own auto-focus drive mechanism This USD mechanism delivers fast, making it a perfect telephoto zoom choice for photographing sports, racing, or other fast-moving subjects. The lens also boasts Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization to assist in handheld photography, not only at long focal length ranges where blurring is common, but also under low-lit conditions, dramatically enhancing photographic freedom. This combination of best in class image resolution, Ultra Silent Drive and Vibration Compensation is a new achievement of Tamron technology culminating in the production of a premium 70-300mm lens.

Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters - they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

A Full-Time Manual Focus Makes Fine Tuning Easy
All Tamron lenses have high auto focus precision and are designed to capture subjects easily and in almost any situation, yet sometimes a photographer wants to fine-tune and make adjustments on the fly. The integration of a full-time manual focus offers just that: instead of fumbling with switches, photographers can from auto-focus to manual-focus by simply adjusting the focus ring. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.

Cleaner Crisper Images without Flare or Ghosting
The new BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) reduce the lens reflection and dispersion that cause ghosting and flare. The coating enhances light transmission in both the short and long wavelength ranges, ensuring excellent performance in all photographic conditions. Additionally, internal surface coatings are applied to cemented surfaces of all lens elements to deliver sharp, high-contrast images and flawless color re-production.

Vibration Compensation (VC) Mechanism-Making Telephoto & Low Light a New Medium
The actuator and algorithms, developed in-house at Tamron, provide the power that gives Vibration Compensation it's excellent tracking performance and smooth, stable viewfinder image. Tamron's VC mechanism provides a three-coil system, whereby the three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens groups electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction, helping to eliminate the blur from camera shakes for clean shots night or indoors, or in macro and telephoto situations, hand held has never been this easy.

Speed is Nothing if not Stable
Fast and accurate without so much as a whisper. The SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD is the first to boast Tamron's new Ultra Silent Drive (USD). USD is Tamron's latest autofocus motor technology rotor, converting, converting ultrasonic waves into torque to quietly deliver a new level of focus precision and speed. Because it's still built on a rotor it's full time manual focus is as easy as ever-allowing the photographer smooth manual focusing without having to fumble with a switch. With advanced motor technology and newly developed software, Tamron's USD delivers a practical, precise, noiseless photographic experience at turbo speed. For those dynamic sports shots, moving vehicles, or fast moving subjects, there has never been a better option.
Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) Lens
Extra Low Dispersion (XLD) lens elements made from specialized ultra-high-grade glass allow Tamron lens designers to achieve much greater control over chromatic aberration (color fringing) and magnification aberrations, the two major factors that inhibit image quality enhancement. In combination with LD elements, XLD elements are used to achieve sophisticated lenses that deliver the highest possible contrast, the finest detail, and superior imaging performance throughout the entire zoom range.

Full Frame Sensor for Ulitmate Versatility
The SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DI VC USD is one of Tamron's Digitally Integrated (Di) designs. The Di series is the mark of Tamron lenses that are format-versatile since they can be used on Digital APS-C, full-frame and 35mm SLR cameras.
Auto-Focus / Manual-Focus (AF/MF) Switch Mechanism on the Focus Ring
The ability to switch quickly between auto-focus (AF) and manual-focus (MF) is a great asset in many types of shooting, especially sports and nature photography. This is easily accomplished with Tamron’s ingenious AF/MF system. By simply sliding the focus ring back and forth between the two positions you can select either the AF or MF focusing position. In manual-focus mode Tamron lenses provide smooth, precise manual focusing by turning their wide, well-textured focusing rings.

5 out of 5 eggsTamron SP70-300mm DiVC

Pros: This is the BEST option for someone not wanting to invest a lot of $$ on a lens in this zoom range. It has excellent image quality. The VC works excellent for 300mm hand held shots.

Cons: Not a macro, but then again I did not purchase for that use.

Other Thoughts: I've owned 2 of the canon version of this lens & was extremely disappointed in them past 150mm. This Tamron that replaced my Canon lens simply blows them away in sharpness.

5 out of 5 eggsStill great, even after 1 year

Pros: Just chiming in as others have said--spectacular value. I bought this from Newegg over a year ago Along with a Canon T2i), and it is still performing flawlessly. It is a joy to use. The Image Stabilization (IS) is truly as good as everyone says it is. Because of the combination of ease of use and the IS, I find myself taking shots that I never would have bothered with before. Bottom line: more fun equals more shots; more shooting equals better chances of getting that "one in a thousand" shot we all go for. I never owned a Tamron lens before, but I am impressed

Cons: It wasn't free.

Other Thoughts: I saw Tamron has more rebates out right now. Got my first one on rebate...this makes it enticing to look at more toys...

5 out of 5 eggsThis lens is the best zoom for the $

Pros: Focus is sharp and quick. Vibration Reduction works beautifully. Build quality is excellent. Zoom ring is slightly stiff but not an issue, definitely no issue with lens creep. Lens weight feels great with the 60D. Just read the reviews and look at the tests. You can't beat this lens for the price and quality.

Cons: Doesn't go to 800mm.

Other Thoughts: Buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsTamron 70-300mm Di VC For Canon

Pros: VC works great even at 300mm, great color, price is very reasonable for what you get. The overall built of the lens is very solid.

Cons: I found the zoom ring a bit stiff, and it was hard for me to get used to turning the opposite way to Canon lenses, although that is no fault of the lens.

Other Thoughts: I know there are better lenses from Canon, but also at a much higher price point. For this price range this lens has a lot to offer and is a great value.

5 out of 5 eggsVR IS amazing.

Pros: Year ago the rule of thumb was the shutter speed should be 1/focal length of the lens (35mm film). So with a 450mm lens (which this effectively is with my APS-C Canon 60D) a handheld shot would call for about 1/500th of a second. NOT WITH THIS BABY!! I'm handholding shots that I could only make in my dreams. 1/30 and 1/60th of a second. The image stabilations (IS) or VR if you prefer is mind boggling.

95% of the time the Autofocus does a better job in about a tenth of second than I could unless I fiddled with the 5X magnification for about 10 seconds.

One more thing- for what you get this is a very inexpensive lens.

Cons: IF it breaks I'm going to be pissssed and I'll take back all the nice things I said about the lens.

Other Thoughts: Newegg always tries to make their customers happy.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat mid tele from tamron !

Pros: at first look is a very robust lense, bigger than any other 70-300 out there, i like that fact is easier to keep lense balanced this way, all the goodies works as describes, VC way better than canon or nikons equivalent, tamron have a 3 axis compensation on this lense. hunts a tiny bit in very low light but thats reasonable to spect from a f4 lense. price and rebate maskes this lense easy to get.

Cons: only wished the front lense element and filter thread was a bit bigger , like a 72 or 62mm diameter and to make it an very high likeable lense will be sweet if it was constant f4 all the way thru the range, but hey u cannot spect more for the price of this great lense, bokeh not so creamy as many may spect....overall a good purchase.

Other Thoughts: and most of all , newegg was fast, my items were received very well packaged, i would dare to say , the best packaging i had seen from photo accessories providers, they had become my favorite store for all my photo needs, no doubt !

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT DEAL!!!

Pros: 1. For the zoom lens 70-300mm range with Vibration Control (Functions similar to Canon IS) and the new Ultra Silent Drive (USD) technology from Tamron, This Tamron SP 70-300mm beats both Canon and Sigma brands in term of current price and $50 mail in rebate offering by Tamron USA until the end of this year.
2. On top of the above, Newegg also throws in the additional free gift of value $99.99 item, the Dolica DK-30 Camera travel backpack. Well, do the math and you wil see it is the greatest and unbeatable price offerring by Newegg. (Small note: it took about a week for Newegg to ship my free gift)
3. Comparing to my old Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM (current price is a litle more than $500):
a. The new Tamron USD is as quiet, silent, smooth and good as the Canon USM. NO MORE loud noise for the Tamron. The VC is about a stop more than the Canon.
b. Image Quality: from 150-300mm is out performing the Canon by far. From 70-150mm the canon is a little better.

Cons: See other thoughts:

Other Thoughts: Mine is a little front focus and it requires to microadjust (MA) +4 to +7 on the Canon 7D. After adjusting MA to +4 on 7D, the IQ from 70-150 is on par with the Canon at center, and it out performs the Canon at coners. I do not list as con because most of the lenses I have require some MA on the 7D. It would be nice if I received a perfect lens. Then again some lens might be perfected on one camera, but might not be great on other.

I am very luck to get this excellent piece of glasses, but I also hear some other people are not that so lucky. The quality control at Tamron is known to be inferior than Canon and Nikon companies. But with Tamron list as SP product, it is considered one of the best tamron line in term of quality control (I hope so...Cross my fingers and hope my Tamy 70-300 will be last for a couple years)

Considering the current offering from Newegg and Tamron 6 years limited Warranty, I believe it is AN EXCELLENT DEAL (if you do not get a lemon.)

5 out of 5 eggsOne Nice Telephoto !

Pros: well canon and nikon have a very strong competitor now, this lense is just oustanding, the vibration control outperforms some of my IS lenses, a little tricky at the beginning but one you get the hang of is just marvelous, i was able to take some sharp shots at night in very dim street lights, the tricky part is due to fact that tamron's Vc have 3 axis compensation unlike some canon Is lenses which only have 2 axis (pan and tilt ), the usd is above average, a little hunting when there's no good transition from light to shadow, but averall very good indeed. lense barrel does not rotates which is very good for using filters all elements inside focuses internally, solid built with metal mount and it does includes the petal shaped hood unlike some counterparts.

Cons: a little chunkier than other brands, but taking into consideration the Fix lens barrel (does not rotates), internal autofocusing mecasnism, ultra sonic drive and vibration compensation i dont mind at all ... plus it looks more professional looking ...similar to a nikkor lense.

Other Thoughts: averall it just topped my spectations, some users talked about focusing problems, not in my case, the first thing i did with mine was to test focus in a lens aling chart and it is DEAD ON, no micro adjustment necesary with my 7d, so I was lucky enough to be owner of a hight QC unit..... this one is a keeper and a winner for tamron ... now lets see how long it will last to finish on the review !
