Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

  • CANON EF Mount Camera
ICON Loading...

This lens does what many pros thought couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better. Extended coverage to an ultra-wide angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

5 out of 5 eggsYes it's a lot of $$ but worth it!

Pros: Excellent build quality, Weather sealing, Fast, It's an L!

Cons: No IS

Other Thoughts: Received this lens a few weeks ago and it's been on my 7D ever since. Yes, it's a lot of $ it's worth it! Very pleased with it, beautiful images, very sharp. Just as sharp as my 50mm 1.4 (which has been my go-to lens for a while). Very fast focus too. I've seen a lot of reviews about bad copies, not being sharp, etc. No issues with mine. Not sure if some people have blur and focus issues b/c they have unsteady shooting styles/posture. This lens just feels great in your hands and on the 7D. Pretty good deal here on Newegg when I purchased it. I shoot weddings & portraits- it's the perfect lens for my work.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

Pros: Because of some of the excellent reviews for this lens, I have to assume that there are good copies out there, but it appears the rate of bad ones is significantly higher than you would expect from a lens at this class.

Cons: Mine produced very inconsistent results. One of every 4 shots is blurred and clearly out of focus. The ones that are in focus were actually slightly better than my Tamron 28-75 (not by much). Sent it back to NewEgg for replacement but had to pay shipping and now I have to wait for the replacement and hope that it would actually work as expected

Other Thoughts: Canon need to really examine their quality assurance for this lens. Do a Google search and you will find numerous complaints about focusing issues. I wish I stuck with my Tamron as it was acceptable for 1/3 the price.

5 out of 5 eggsBest lens in my kit

Pros: The build quality is superb, and the image quality is fantastic! I use this lens as my walk-around lens on my 5D mkII, and although it only zooms to 70mm, the fact that it opens up to 2.8 more than makes up for any range shortcomings

Cons: heavy! This is not a light lens by any means, but like anything else in life, you get what you pay for!

4 out of 5 eggsNice if you find sharp copy..

Pros: Very nice lens if you find sharp copy. One of mine came not sharp, had to return it. Image quality and sharpness very nice!! Used to be my favorite lens before I went with primes.

Cons: many not sharp copies around..

Other Thoughts: Still have it with all of my Canon primes, still love it after 8 years of owning it.. I sold it ones and then bout it again, but had to buy it twice before I found sharp copy. Many people complain about those faulty copies outter..

4 out of 5 eggsGreat lens but a little limited

Pros: ***Image quality - Only zoom lens that rivals the image quality of the 50mm 1.8F. Even when wide open the image quality is great with balanced saturation, contrast and a very pleasing bokeh.
***Fast lens - Hopefully I will not need to go to the 50mm 1.8F again, though the prime is superb it always had me wondering if only I had a similarly fast zoom lens that was a lot wider than the 50mm.
**Weight/Size - Some people have complained about the size and weight of this lens but let me tell you if you have a FF or the XXD/XD series cameras like 40D, 50D or 7D this lens is a perfect match.
**Build Quality - It feels very solid and reassuring on my 50D and pairs well with my 70-200 f/4 L. If you are worried that the extending barrel may accumulate dust, no need to worry it's got a gasket (dust sealing) at the end that blocks any dust from entering the barrel.
***Sharpness - This lens is super sharp even in low light and the AF is supper fast.

Cons: ***Limited Usage - This lens is very limited by the focal length and limits the use of this lens as a general purpose walk around lens. If you are into photography as a hobby and don't mind compromising the image quality a bit then go for the 24-105mm. But if you really care about image quality and want to take low light shots this is the ultimate lens for you.
*Bokeh - The bokeh is very good but need to be careful you may end up with a part of your shot out of focus unintentionally (as I found out at a diner table, some of the guests were out of focus due to F2.8)
*Reverse extending barrel - The lens barrel is fully extended at 24mm and fully retreated at 70mm. This is a minor inconvenience that takes some getting used to.

Other Thoughts: Even with the limited focal length once you get this lens it makes you smile with each shot and it gets impossible to part with it as I have found out.

I was pleasantly surprised to get a free Dolica lens case which is perfect for my 70-200mm. Unlike the soft lens case from canon this case actually protects the lens due to its great all round padding.
Although I won't be using it but also included were Dolica UV and ND filters (I got Hoya UV filter)

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb Lens

Pros: There's mixed feelings about this lens, some people love it while others complain it's not sharp enough. I can tell you my copy is extremely sharp. If for some reason you're unlucky enough to get a bad copy, send it back to Canon for calibration... remember you just spent $1,300 on a lens, they will fix it if there's something off. Ok, sharpness is important but it's not the only thing, what about color? The color from this lens is amazing! It's up there with some of the best, about as good as any Zeiss I've used. Bokeh (quality of the blur, not the amount). Out of this world... as good as any prime I've used. Corner sharpness? Up there with the best... the only thing sharper is a 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, or a TS-E 24mm f/3.5. On my Canon 5D Mark II this is easily one of the best lenses I've ever owned. The reverse zoom makes the hood block stray light at all focal lengths exceptionally well. Flare is well controlled too. AF is fast, accurate, and quiet. Build is excellent.

Cons: This isn't really a con, but a 2.8 at this focal length is heavy. If you have weak wrists, they might get a little sore using this for long periods of time. On the up side, if you learn to balance the weight... right hand on the camera, left hand on the lens your forearms and wrists will get used to it.

Other Thoughts: The hood is recommended to protect the lens at all times, it's reverse zoom function can be confusing... you don't want to zoom the lens right into something on close-up shots. With the hood attached if you ever bang it into something the hood will take damage instead of the glass.

If you need a standard focal length AF zoom, and are on Full Frame... this is the best lens for you.

5 out of 5 eggsAWSOME LENS!!!

Pros: Where should i start...
...let me tell you something this lens is AMAZING!!!...very sharp wide open @ 2.8, color and contrast are very very nice.

Since i got this lens on July 8, 2010. I haven't taken it off my Canon 7D, I did an engagement photo shoot the follow day and all i can say is WOW!!!.

I hear people talk about the weight of this lens, trust me its not that heavy, come on guys its a L-lens.

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: Why are you here still reading, you should go and buy this lens...and make sure you get it from newegg... good service and fast delivery.

5 out of 5 eggsTake the Plunge

Pros: I bought this lens from the egg over a year ago. I needed a great walk around lens and had the cash to burn. This lens STAYS glued to my 20d unless I shoot baseball games in which case I use a Canon 20 - 200L. This lens is basically as clear as a prime lens. It is great shooting from manual mode as that is what I mostly shoot from. The clarity I get from this lens is stellar. It is easily worth the $ if you are serious about your photography.

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: Get a good UV filter to protect the glass and do not be cheap as your photo will only be as good as the glass you shoot through.
