The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro lens is for use with full-frame and APS-C DSLRs, offering an effective focal length of 80mm on APS-C system. It consists of 9 lens elements in 8 groups, and features a floating optical system that focuses down from infinity to one-half life size (1:2), making it great for minute objects like insects or flowers. You can further improve its macro capability to life size (1:1) by adding optional Life Size Converter EF, which also increases working distance. Light and compact, it also functions beautifully as a general-purpose normal lens for standard focal length shooting.

  • newegg Superb Optical Performance The lens features optical design of 9 elements in 8 groups, and features floating optical system that dynamically varies the gap between key lens elements based on focusing distance rather than using fixed spacing. Aberrations are effectively suppressed throughout the focusing range, assuring high image quality in all shooting situations.
  • newegg Macro Capability Capable of focusing from infinity down to one-half life size (0.5x), this lens can uncover detail that would otherwise be impossible to detect by the naked eye.

2 out of 5 eggsupdate...

Pros: While it worked this lens is second to none.

Cons: Update:...While image quality is second to none, the problem is in the build quality. My 50mm 2.5 macro simply just stopped focusing all of a sudden. I won't order another one and doubt that I can get it repaired at a decent price. Lens warranty's are a real joke, especially with this one... Beware that this lens seems to be pronged to failure...sooner rather than later.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Lens

Pros: Great image quality, close ups are awesome!

Previously I was using the 18-55mm kit lens and this lens is a good step up when increasing my shutter speed. So far I'm loving it.

Cons: The AF does search in low light, mostly a pain because the focus range is so big! I use MF in lowlight, but should it be noted that if AF gets lost it has a long road to travel down and back.

Other Thoughts: The AF is a bit louder than my USM lens' but still is not loud enough to make me think twice for using this lens. This was my main concern before purchase, but was relieved to find its really a non issue.

I was considering the F1.4 and this lens. Chose this one since I tend to be disappointed when I can't get in close on a small flower, etc.

No regrets or issues yet. Newegg service was amazing again. Love it.

5 out of 5 eggs"Incredible Lens"

Pros: Anyone (amateur or pro) looking for "L" quality-like glass will do well to get this lens. It's razor sharp end to end - photos are nicely saturated and extremely clear. Put a 1.4 tamron-pro converter on this lens and stop down to F/8 or above and you'll see image quality improve even more. Auto focusing is slow for shooting moving targets, but for landscapes and light macro...this is a pro lens in every sense...but don't take my word for it. Go to photodo.com and see for yourself the MTF rating...Rated at 4.4, which is higher than most "L" lenses. For the price...this is probably the greatest value for image quality Canon has ever produced.

Cons: auto focus a little slow, but not a problem when you consider that most photographers are searching mostly for image quality.

Other Thoughts: I'm a pro photographer and I wouldn't use any other 50mm lens at any price...no other will even come close in quality

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent lens for the price

Pros: This lens is sharp, and the af is good. Considering what you get, and how much better it performs than the starter lens, it is money well spent. Just Don't expect the quality of a $1600.00 lens for this price.

Cons: The Autofocus could be better, but it doesn't kill the usefulness of the lens.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg got it to me in record time, and in excellent shape. You can't beat NewEgg!

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice for the money

Pros: Relatively fast lens, excellent close-up performance.

Cons: Not a true macro, requires $250 extender to get true 1:1 macro.

Other Thoughts: The auto focus is useless, but luckily when using for it's inteded close-up purpose, you only use manual anyway. If doubling use as a general purpose 50mm portrait lens (very nice quality) you will miss or want USM focusing.
