2 out of 5 eggsAvoid if you have Windows 7

Pros: It's better than nothing.

Cons: The only driver available for this thing is from 2009. I'm having some BSOD issues and this driver is showing up in the DMP logs has having problems, but there's no way to update it. Intel does not provide any support for this card.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great in Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. Good performance.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Limited by the capabilities of the PCI bus, however this is not a con since you should know this before you buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsAcceptable!

Pros: A very straight forward plug and play solution to the classic 10/100 NIC bottleneck nightmare. Works exceptionally well in Windows Server 2003/2008 and Hypervisor. This is the card that's on the VMware ESXi compatibility list so GET IT! Low profile card fits the Norco 2u and agrees with the 11 year old Pentium 4 board.

Cons: It went up $1 in the past 3 years and between the new Atheros and Realtek stuff showing up as stock board options these days, network devices haven't improved at all. It seems like all it's good for is improving OLD computers and experimenting with Hypervisor.

Other Thoughts: Other thoughts? There are no thoughts. Get this and get stuff done. Turn those painful 6 hour long network backup waiting periods into 10 minutes. If you're experimenting with Hypervisor, this allows you that option and that kind of freedom is definitely worth exploring at least once.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with Pfsense

Pros: Works great with Pfsense, very stable, reliable, doesn't lock up, gives full throughput, when running speed and latency tests you can see the difference right away. use 4 of these in 2 different business locations, haven't had any issues for almost a year now

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Eggcellent Intel Product

Pros: This network card has been my choice for my router computer for the last two years. It easily handles the thousands of packets per second I push through my Internet pipe, and I've never felt like this card has been a bottleneck anywhere I've installed one.

Cons: The low profile bracket limits which cases you can use this card in. It's great for my Mini ITX router build.

Other Thoughts: I've had a few of these get hit by lightning and toasted (I put them on outside facing interfaces connected to a Motorola Canopy antenna on the roof) so they get subjected to heavy EMF during storm season.

I've had to replace about one a year, but I've had to replace Canopy antennas pretty frequently, too. All in all, I give props to this card, because it's never allowed my motherboard to become damaged by the EMF it's subjected to.

5 out of 5 eggsIntel Pro 1000 PCI, Low Profile

Pros: This card is the one to get regardless of operating system if you are restricted to a PCI slot and small form factor, low profile expansion slots. Speed increase from 100Mbps to 280+ Mbps over the internal NIC of the motherboard used.

Cons: It's not PCI-Express, so it cannot get near 1000 Mbps. The bottleneck is the PCI bus itself, which I knew going into this purchase- I wanted higher network file transfer and backup speed for which this card performs admirably enough... not really a con for what it is.

Other Thoughts: Functions in any Linux, or FreeBSD Distribution. Windows XP picks it up right away as well. Did not use or play with the network booting, although knowing the professional and business installations the Pro 1000 regularly enjoys I can guess there is support for any functionality you might need in network boot/PXE. I've worked in IT and over the years I have installed hundreds of Intel NICs because of their support and ease of install/variety of platforms/performance/functions.

5 out of 5 eggsTypical Intel NIC

Pros: It's an Intel NIC... that's pretty much all you need to know. It's fast and reliable.

Cons: Didn't come with a unicorn.
