5 out of 5 eggsdoes what it's supposed to do

Pros: Gb USB NIC
Plug-n-Play worked perfectly without manual driver download or install (Windows 7, no other OSes tested)
decreased my laptop backup time in half (has a 100Mb NIC built-in)

Cons: can't replace the on-board 100Mb NIC with this one

Other Thoughts: USB 2.0 so it's actually limited to that speed, but for the HATERS out there, how fast does your hard drive read/write data anyways????? is it really faster than 400+Mb???? as i said, this made my backup jobs run in half the time and the bottleneck is the hard drive on my file server anyways, which is slower than the hard drive on my laptop, which is slower than USB 2.0 max transfer rate, which is slower than Gb network.

this device is for a (home) user to upgrade older/slower tech, not for business class (side note - I would NEVER use USB on a business server to "upgrade"; USB is for temporary, get me by for now, kind of use in the business server world)

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Better than no internet.. Driver for Win 7 64 bit was easy to find and install.

Cons: With a lan card, my desktop was pulling around 15 MB/s, same as my laptop on wireless. When I installed this my speed dropped to around 500 K/s. I could only keep connected to an internet speed testing site long enough to run one test before it timed out on me continuously. The results were .5 MB/s download and 1.5 MB/s upload. I spent an extra $20 so I could get a trusted piece that would work, and I was very disappointed by this piece. Less than a week and I'm sending it back.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Like A Champ

Pros: Works great. I have replaced 100Mb wired and 802.11N connections with this. It connected to my gigabit switch and works great with my Drobo FS and other gigabit computers. Speed with this adapter is almost triple compared with the 100Mb and .11N.

Cons: Not really a con but... it's transfer speed is between 27-29 MB, which is about half of the theoretical max of USB 2.0. I wasn't expecting it to be as responsive as a built-in NIC (like the other PCs on my LAN) so it wasn't an issue.

Other Thoughts: Adapter supports 4K and 9K frames, QOS tagging, and MAC masking--all in the Windows driver settings. I downloaded the most current driver from StarTech's website and installed them before plugging in the adapter. I've read other reviews that said it was plug and play, but why not help the install along? And as always, Newegg was rock solid with price and shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsit worked, performance in line with what I expected

Pros: I'm using this on a compact linux server that didn't have a free pci or pci-e slot.

I compiled the ASIX module into my kernel, and the card detected just fine without issues.

Performance was roughly 200-250mbps during large file copies, which is what I expected due to the USB bus limits.

For giggles, I also plugged this into my Windows 7 workstation. The driver detection wizard found the right driver from Windows Update, and the card seemed to work great in limited testing with Windows.

Cons: no usb 3 support ( I knew this buying it, so no "eggs" off.

USB 3 support would be awesome though, you'd get the gigabit network speed on it.

2 out of 5 eggsDoes not work as Gig adapter

Pros: The only reason that I did not give this adapter 1 egg is because it DOES FUNCTION, so for someone who needs an ethernet port, this will work.

Cons: This unit does NOT function as a Gig port. I did several tests using iperf with several different gigabit ethernet devices using brand new Cat6 cable and couldn't get the speed to exceed 100-110 Mbps. As a gigabit adapter connected through USB 2.0, its theoretical maximum should be the USB 2.0 speeds of about 480 Mbps, realistically seeing somewhat less (probably around 350-400 Mbps). A gigabit adapter that provides Fast Ethernet speeds is useless to me.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this adapter and will look for an alternative to achieve my gigabit ethernet needs.

2 out of 5 eggsok but not USB fast - only 10MB/s for me

Pros: It works with OSX Lion on my iMac 27' with a very bad 10/100 T-Base Ethernet card.

Cons: It only get 10 MB/s and the which is as fast as T-Base/100
although T-Base 1000 is enabled. BUT THAT's pretty much as much as transmitting through WiFI so basically useless for me

Other Thoughts: I use it for backing up my photo archive to my QNAP NAS
