5 out of 5 eggsPerfect solution for my network

Pros: - basic documentation is helpful and accurate
- manufacturer has extensive online articles for setup (but see Cons for some advanced guides)
- Interface is intuitive and very responsive
- Unit is fast and reliable

Cons: - Some of the advanced guides should not be followed. OpenVPN setup, for example, start with a reboot and factory cleanup of the settings, then proceeds to require custom static WAN & LAN numbers for two computers connected to same network. Whatever you do, Do Not Do This :P.
Actual process is MUCH simpler and more practical than indicated.

- For some, lack of wireless is a con, but for me, it's exactly what I wanted (I setup several wireless access points that I have discrete control over)

Other Thoughts: I've owned routers which tick many of the "feature boxes" as LRT224. However, having interface that's fast, responsive, easy to navigate, with proper English, and that does not require a reboot after each change, is absolutely worth the price. There is a lot of hardship we endure with $50-$100 units that we don't realize isn't mandatory :)

I've bridged my ISP's cable modem and used LRT224 to connect to internet within seconds. Setup MAC binding for some devices easily, with a very helpful "show unknown IP addresses" buton which indicates which devices are connected but aren't MAC bound.

VPN was easy to set up once I decided to ignore the manual, and I'm now connected from Ottawa to all my Toronto systems.
I feel I have more control over my advanced home setup than ever before, and I have opportunity to learn and setup more advanced networking concepts.

Overall, I found the unit fast, reliable, and exactly what I wanted. My next step is to setup VLANs.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money

Pros: Wall Mountable

Cons: TWO units arrived with either faulty LAN ports or WAN ports. The software is slow to respond when using the web gui and the IPSEC implimentation is poor and slow. It is not compatible with ANY cloud VPNs and the load balancing between the wan ports is not consitant. It also is not application aware when doing load balacing across both ports.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Richard T.,

Thank you for taking your time in providing us this product review. We appreciate sharing your observation with the Linksys LRT224 router. Please allow us to help you. When you say the two (2) units have either faulty LAN/WAN ports, are you trying to say that the devices connected to the LAN ports are unable to receive any data and IP Addresses? It is also possible that we just need to upgrade the firmware of the router to resolve the issue that you have with the GUI and load balancing. Please send us the details at This will help us in sorting out this situation. Kindly include your contact details and the link back to this review.

We look forward to hear from you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Bought for Failover & VLAN segregation for home office (I don't use the VPN capabilities). Does both without issue.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Excellent SOHO value for the price; competent web interface. The manual did a good job on describing and setting up the VLANs though supplemental reading may be necessary. Failover was a simple checkbox.
