4 out of 5 eggsHardware Good / Firmware needs work

Pros: The speeds that I am able to achieve with this router are quite good. I am, however, upgrading from a DIR-655 router that had been in service for years. This router does not experience any slowdowns in my families large user environment. We are in total six people with 3 desktops, 6 laptops, 4 iPads, 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, a NAS RAID unit, and a networked DVR security system. My network setup is the DIR-880L as the main router, a DIR-1008G switch for distribution to the hardwired devices, and the DIR-655 being used as an AP for the kids (different SSID).

Cons: The firmware is poor compared to the old DIR-655 firmware. The aesthetics are quite nice with the new graphics, however, it is difficult to find all of the options that I am used to and some are flat our missing. For example, I can create a schedule to restrict my kids devices from the internet, however, I cannot find the access control dialog to use the schedule, nor can I add a schedule to website filtering as a workaround. Even the schedule is a bit weird; since it is graphical it won't let me set a restricted time from 22:00-06:00, instead I have to use 06:00-22:00.

I can appreciate the visual polish that Dlink has put on the tired old interface, however, that doesn't make up for the missing features. I am hopeful that a firmware update is coming soon.

Other Thoughts: I am still giving this 4 stars as Dlink products have treated me well through the years. Anytime there has been a firmware issue it has been corrected. In the case of the DIR-880L it is only a question of when this will happen not if.

5 out of 5 eggsBest router to date from D-Link, Even better than the DIR-868L..Which is just as Good!!!

Pros: Over all this router was a breeze to set up and was quickly online and at Internet speeds to spec. The new UI is pretty snappy on performance when navigating and nested features are easy to find. Those familiar with D-Link's current router web pages will find this fairly similar and easy to use. Just the look and some feel is different. I presume that D-Link is headed to a more less complex web page UI for users to use.

The wireless range from my initial testing is very good. I sat in my living room with my Mac Book Pro while the router was 20ft away down the hallway in the office and had full signal bars on 2.4Ghz. Same room testing and all wired results are for public review in the provided link below. Only issue I have is that it's hard for users to see what actually there wireless devices are connected at with the router. On current DIR series routers, we have a Wireless Status page that gives the device connection rates and signal percentages. This is not available on the 880L and it would be nice to have this feature added in for troubleshooting and diagnostic reasons. Knowing connection rates if very helpful.

Gaming on XBL with 360 connected to a DIR-868L bridge to the DIR-880L last night was great. No major issues seen. I downloaded a 1.5Gb map pack which took longer than expected however it was a new release yesterday so others downloading it at the same time may have been effecting the download. I wasn't seeing much over 650KB when looking at the 5Ghz graph page on the 880L while this was going on. Gaming was great, no lag see accept for one which I believe that was service related. Over all was great gaming on a Bridged 5Ghz connection. The Bridge was at a 15ft distance with one wall in between the Bridge and Router.

Cons: Some features are missing or not longer supported:
Wireless device connection status and rates.
Wireless Security mode options, no selectable TPIK or AES only. I presume it's all automatic now.
Ping System Test

It would be nice to have wireless connection rates displayed on the router for troubleshooting and diagnostic help. It's nice to know what devices are connecting at with the router.

Other Thoughts: With the use of the Amply line router case, this router isn't the cylinder style case seen on previous modes. this is the slender Amplify line case and it seems D-Link has listened to some concerns about heat and cooling. The entire bottom case is perforated with air holes for cooling. I opened the top cover to find a large metal heat sink instead of composite ones. Thank you D-Link.

Please visit the D-Link forums for more information and help with this router model and others. Good Stuff D-Link.
