2 out of 5 eggsDied after almost 4years of use

Pros: Worked for a while, good price

Cons: Died after almost 4 years, ran hot.

Other Thoughts: Device worked for a pretty good while, almost 4 years, but shouldn't have died even after that. Did have a bit of flakiness throughout its life and needed a few "reboots." Did run hot though it's whole life but it lived in a cool basement and that probably kept it alive that long. After its death a few days ago I noticed the power requirement stamped into the device where the cable attaches. Says 9V/1A. Power adapter DC output is 12V/1A. Could be why it ran hot and died after a while....

Wouldn't buy one again even if I got another 4 years out of it.

5 out of 5 eggs8 ports really on mean 7

Pros: It is what it is!

An 8 Port Gigabit Switch that leaves 7 distributable ports! Nothing new there!

Cons: None! It works as advertised!

Other Thoughts: I wired my house for networking and needed a switch! Bad luck from another brand lead me to this! No complaints so far!

3 out of 5 eggsGood value, runs hot - must keep cool

Pros: Cheap, good value.

Cons: Runs hot like everybody says. High heat causes unit to malfunction - this goes for the AC adapter and the unit itself. Plastic construction.

Other Thoughts: Ran stable for a good year, then froze-up due to summer heat. Replaced with a lower power consumption switch that ran cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch, but...

Pros: Excellent switch, utterly trouble-free. I bought two of these here, and they're both performing flawlessly. Nothing could be simpler. They work with a mix of 100Mb and 1Gb connections simultaneously and transparently at what appears to be excellent speed. Price was very competitive.

Cons: I don't know when it started, but a few days ago I set out to buy a third copy of this switch, and was startled to see the shipping charge for the item set at 23.31! I could have just bought elsewhere but hoped to help correct the mistake. After some email sparring with Customer Service, I find they have now raised the price by at least $2 more than a correct shipping charge for similar size/type items -- and set shipping to Free.

Other Thoughts: Raising the price by MORE than shipping should cost as the fix for an obvious shipping overcharge? Good business for Newegg, perhaps, but it makes the Free Shipping offer a bit disingenuous. I bought my third switch elsewhere, and I probably will not ever try to help again.

3 out of 5 eggsOK for price

Pros: Decent for the money. Great throughput

Cons: Runs hot. No cooling fan. After 15 months it started locking up. Throughput went to nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Switch

Pros: Good price. All the features that actually effect performance. Reliable. No internal fans. Has worked perfectly from day one and has exceeded my expectations for reliability.

Cons: None really. It is a little bit hard to tell which lights are on on the front panel (from a distance) because that information is printed next to the LED windows and the pattern of the lights doesn't necessarily allow you to determine which ones are which. I had a Linksys router that had different colors of LED for different things and the pattern of LEDs that were usually on allowed you to determine, even without being able to read the labels on the front, which lights were on after you had memorized the normal pattern. This switch doesn't have an LED pattern that allows one to do that so easily, but this is really not a big deal at all.

5 out of 5 eggsBeware Shipping Cost

Pros: This is a great little switch. I use 2 at home and 3-4 others in soho environments around town. Great speed/reliability for the price.

Cons: They lock up in high heat environments. Around 40c i start seeing problems. Just tossed a case fan next to it and am having no problems.

Other Thoughts: Beware newegg's shipping costs on this item right now.

2 out of 5 eggsAfter a year, lots of lock-ups

Pros: Being used in a home office with a number of computers and a wireless access point. Was a good value when I bought it. Ran slightly warm but performed well at first.

Cons: After about a year of use, the switch started locking up on a pretty regular basis. It is plugged into a good UPS, so I don't believe this was caused by power hits. I started getting a lot of complaints from a VIP user (my wife), so I'm replacing it with a Netgear.

Other Thoughts: Have had good experiences with SMC in general, so this particular unit may have been a dud.
