5 out of 5 eggsFeature rich and reasonably priced

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: Very rich set of configuration options.

I love the fact that I can monitor the utilization on any port either by plain vanilla usage counters, or graphically. The instantaneous power draw from each port is also displayed.

The cases are solidly constructed, and are heavy enough to not tip when 8 cables are connected.

All 8 ports are POE, unlike cheaper models where only half are POE. 70W maximum power, shared across all ports. Each port can be individually have its power limited, or can be prioritized like QoS.

Fanless, so dead quiet.

Cons: It would have been nice if this switch had a non-POE uplink port. It seems a shame to have to waste a POE port for this.

When making configuration changes, it is very easy to find the "apply" button, however clicking apply does not actually save the setting, it only sets them until the unit is power cycled. To permanently save your changes, you must click the tiny "save" link at the top right of the page. This is a major GUI design failure, in my opinion.

As with most complicated consumer products, the manual is laughable. In this case, ZyXEL has produced a 227 page manual that consists of mostly screen shots of every GUI, and a description that says "This option sets the <fill in what was in the GUI>" or "This displays the <fill in parameter in the GUI>." While I realize that the idea of a user manual is not to teach the user how the feature works, but come on, a little bit more information would be really helpful. In their defense, they do include a limited amount of useful information, and do reference IEEE standards that you can then search for on the net.

Out of the box, the switch is preconfigured with the static IP address 192.168.1.1. Yes, you read that correctly. If you are a home user, there is a 50/50 chance that is also the IP address of your router. So in order to program this, you must disconnect your computer from your network, directly connect it to this switch, and manually set a static IP address on your computer in the 192.168.1 subnet. No, this isn't a showstopper, but what a dumb thing to do.

Other Thoughts: I have been using 2 of them to support POE cameras for almost a year now, and I couldn't be happier. I did notice that with 2 stacked on top of each other, they did get a bit warm. Since I didn't want to move them, nor did I want to cook them, I rigged up a old 80mm computer case fan to blow on them. Now they are quite cool.

4 out of 5 eggsGood purchase

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: Solid product. Fanless, metal case, managed switch with good feature set, very attractive price. Don't think there is anything better in this price range.

Cons: Does not support passive PoE and which means devices not supporting 802.3af standard will not work unless an adapter is used.

Other Thoughts: Note that this switch supports active PoE only (802.3af) which means the switch and the device plugged in need to negotiate voltage before power is provided. Some PoE devices do not support 802.3af and cannot negotiate with the switch and therefore will not be powered up. In this case you will need 802.3af to passive PoE adapter.

5 out of 5 eggsCan be powered by another POE Switch!

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: Not documented anywhere I could see, but this switch can be powered by another POE switch! I would expect the switches POE won't work. This is an awesome, cool feature!

Tons of other features, most I don't need. I needed fanless POE. Plugged it into another POE switch and was very surprised when it came on without another power cord attached. It also acts as redundant power when the switch is plugged into its power supply.

Cons: For the price, it's what I expect. Home user so I don't need the other features but I might use some eventually.

4 out of 5 eggsFunctional

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: 8 POE port in a managed switch for a decent price. Lots of options you'll never use. Web GUI looks nice. Drives some Trendnet IP cameras nicely.

Cons: IPv6 busted, at least with RA's. Funcky web GUI. Nice to have the setup wizard on the first page at startup, afterwards that is annoying.

Other Thoughts: Does what I need at a good price.

2 out of 5 eggsIssues with Voice VLAN

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: The device is very quiet (fanless), has a very quick web interface and generally seemed intuitive to use and configure. For basic functions, it seemed to work as intended.

Cons: After spending several hours attempting to configure, I talked with Zyxel support. This switch has a hardware defect that does not function properly with a voice vlan where the phone has its own switch (computer connected to phone for data vlan, voice data routed to a voice vlan). Connecting phones and using a port based VLAN seemed to work but you lose the capability of the phone switch (if your phone supports that) for devices on an alternate VLAN. Disappointing as the manual / web interface and specs appear to support this feature.

Other Thoughts: For what seems like a very standard setup for VOIP phones (and what I would think a POE switch should support), I was bummed I wasted so much time and now eating restocking fees/shipping costs/etc for a defective product.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: This switch can handle multiple vlans and voice prioritization. Much more switch for the money than expected!

Cons: None I can think of.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good, as advertised

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: Pretty rich with features, only feeding 1-2 devices with PoE so not bad for that limit. Interface is good.

Cons: The temporary IP is a pain, had to do the laptop and single cable to config it off the factory setting.

Make sure you save the config explicitly before installing it permanently otherwise the password and IP won't stick.

Other Thoughts: Integrating the power supply and making it a bit wider would be a good idea, especially for rack mount usage.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat POE Switch

This review is from: ZyXEL GS1900-8HP Managed 8 Port PoE+ Web Managed Switch

Pros: Great 8port PoE switch for home use. Loaded with features and supports options that professinal switches have - i.e.: VLANs, Port Mirroring, PoE , QoS, AAA, LAG, LLDP, and the list goes on.

Cons: The web interface use for managment tends to randomly timeout and kick you out. Not a big deal as it saves the data in the running config and all you have to do is to login again. Secondly, I'm using this to power a WiFi AP (Unifi AP Pro) over PoE and with just 1 connected it's already consuming 25% of available capacity. Before you plan on connecting 8 PoE devices, make sure you check the spec and know that it can handle the load.

Other Thoughts: I believe this is a fairly new product on the marked (I've found no reviews so far), and it's running firmware version 1.00. Hopefully a newer version of the FW will fix the web management timeout issue.
