1 out of 5 eggsSecond Review

Pros: It worked great until it didn't.

Cons: It worked as my main router for about a year and then I began having problems with it as a router. I set it up as a wireless access point after that and it worked ok for another 8 or 9 months and now does not work at all. Performed numerous hard resets, but to no avail. I am read that a lot of other people had the same problems with their refurbished routers. I gave it five stars a year and a half ago, but you would think a product should work longer than that. I think ASUS quality is taking a nosedive from a lot of other reviews I have been reading about their newest routers, and I would consider this fairly new. I caution you to buy at your own risk.

Other Thoughts: I am looking for a new wireless AC Router and will switch my present TPLink Archer 7 into my wireless access point. I like to be able to cover any room in my house as well as outside. My TPLink has been reliable, though I bought it new. Not sure what brand I will buy but ASUS has moved down the list.

2 out of 5 eggsFast when it works

Pros: - Fast
- Easy setup

Cons: - Runs hot

Other Thoughts: I gave it 2 star because it was actually fast when it is working. With 3 computers wired in, 2 mobile phones, and a Chromecast, the router seems to shutdown when all 6 devices are making some activity at the same time. What is interesting is that this happens when 2 more devices are connected to the router.

I have also updated the firmware, rolled back to a previous one, and installed the Merlin firmware. All of the firmware resulted in the same demise of overheating. I have also turned off many of the promising features included in the firmware to alleviate some of the stress from the CPU but it all concludes to the same issue.

I have been happy with any Asus product except for this one and I would highly recommend anyone to look for another router beside this.

5 out of 5 eggsFast & Stable

Pros: The Refurb unit was in like new condition

Its been very fast and has not dropped a connection in my first 2 weeks of using it.

With an updated Intel 7265 AC adapter in my laptop, my download speed as measured by SpeedTest.net improved from an already good 54Mbps to an outstanding 118Mbps (combination of both the new router and new adapter.)

Cons: I had assumed the Asus Firmware ASUSWRT was a lightly skinned version of DD-WRT, sort of like Buffalo's WRT firmware is. But its an entirely different interface. I'm not wild about the firmware interface or clarity, but it works.

Other Thoughts: Great deal on the refurb unit of $99 plus a $10 rebate making it a net $89.

Pros: Worked great, good range, very few resets, WHILE IT WORKED

Cons: Died shortly afer 90 day "limited warrenty " expired

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for this inconvenient timing of your issue. What is the exact issue with it? Does your AC adapter LED still lite up when plugged into different sockets in the house? 5 out of 5 eggsWorth The Money No Doubt

Pros: Cheap....Reliable...Solid signal strength. I bought this unit because I had originally bought the Nighthawk pile of nonsense from Netgear and that was the worst money ever spent. It did nothing but drop signal, recycle the power on itself all the time, and outright not work. Even the USB wifi device I have on one of my other pc's in the network drops left n right (also NG). They are just unreliable...

Needed something in a pinch that had similar specs, albeit this is a minor step down, but is a killer replacement...especially as a refurb unit. I was reluctant at first, but figured why not. Only real step down was the fact it didn't have usb 3.0 support for an external nas connection, but I have a server on my network anyway, so it wasn't a loss for me. This unit has never given me any grief compared to the retail brand new Nighthawk. It just flat out works

Cons: none. not that I can find.

Other Thoughts: do yourself a favor and get one if you need a reliable and affordable router.

4 out of 5 eggsMy first refurb

Pros: Easy setup. Helpful GUI. Reliable - no connection issues/reboots necessary so far

Cons: PIN was not on the refurb or on the packaging. I was still able to get in and configure everything but the guided setup is kinda useless without it. I think this is more of a Newegg oversight than an ASUS problem. If you know what you're doing its not much of a con.

1 out of 5 eggs5g great but 2.4g drops constantly

Pros: 5G superfast, good 5G connectivity, Sold by Newegg

Cons: 2.4G drops every 3-6 URL change. Service is pretty poor if you can get through to Asus. For the first week Asus site dropped every time I hit submit on form. Filled out same form repeatedly, day after day. Did manage to get an RMA but kept trying and after 2 weeks got a service rep and service tag#. Might have been better if I didn't and just sent this thing back. Wasted a lot of time. Unfortunately my main laptop only talks in 2.4G. Another rep gave me instructions that didn't work. Sending the unit back tomorrow. I had a high opinion of Asus before this fiasco. Likely would not purchase another Asus product!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Have you tried adjusting your settings for your 2.4GHz to be more efficient? Also be aware of channel drop when living in apartment complexes from neighboors routers interference in the same channel. If you would like to discuss these options with me, please email me and place case #N141293054 in the subject line for future reference. 1 out of 5 eggsComplete Garbage

Pros: Sleek looking, external adjustable antennae.

Cons: Completely useless. Perhaps my unit was defective, but after spending multiple hours on the phone with ASUS tech support (which is almost impossible to reach) and my ISP, the unit simply will not work. It does not recognize the WAN connection from the modem. I tried 3 different modems, all of which work with my previous routers. No success. Get a nighthawk instead. I will never get back all the time I wasted on this piece of...

Other Thoughts: Do not buy.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I would have recommended the RT-AC68U as this is what I have at home and can handle anything I've thrown it's way. Did you ever check your router at a friends house to verify the WAN connection of the router is the actual issue? This would isolate the issue quiet well if you were able to prove or discprove it as the cause. If you would like to discuss the possibilities of an RMA please email me and place case #N141295090 in the subject line for future reference. 2 out of 5 eggsBad firmware

Pros: You can use the RT-AC66U firmware on the RT-AC66R.

Cons: The RT-AC66R support page lists the 3602 firmware as current but that firmware has a horrific bug that breaks 5ghz. This device suffers badly from buggy firmware. Browse the forums for the RT-AC66U.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, you do have to scour the Asus forums for support. Try the RT-AC66U firmware 3626 or 1123, but avoid 3602 at all costs. Be sure to follow the instructions to reset the router after update if you are having issues. Good luck.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Leer,

I apologize for the issues you have faced but, I am glad you solved the issues with your router by rolling back to a previous firmware. I have an AC66 here at the office and haven't been able to replicate the issue you faced with the newest firmware 3602. If you wish to discuss the issue with me further please email me and place case #N141252642 in the subject line for future reference. 1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it if you expect 5ghz to work

Pros: 802.11 N frequency works and it's black.

Cons: Got a refurb unit, that refuses to work reliably on 5ghz AC.
With updated Asus stock firmware, my devices won't even see the 5ghz SSID. With Merlin firmware, I can see and connect to the 5ghz SSID but the speed is nowhere near advertised. I've tried various settings, channels, even disabling the N radios. It just does not work as advertised. No it is not a range or interference issue, because I'm only a few feet from the router. Basically paid for an expensive N router. Trouble started, when it wouldn't even power on when I plugged in the first time. It started working when I moved to a different outlet and then plugged it back in. I'm really disappointed by Asus quality on this, I was expecting better. I wasn't expecting stellar performance but this is just bad.

Other Thoughts: Maybe the issues are because it's a refurb but in any case, I would not recommend this router.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rick,

You can always find the most updated firmware at Support.asus.com. Please make sure you are currently running firmware ending in .3602 as this is our most recent version currently. Have you checked your log to see if there is anything wrong with the 5GHz transmission? If you would like to discuss the issue please email me and place case #N141293130 in the subject line for future reference.
