5 out of 5 eggsVery Stable

Pros: Prompt delivery, easy setup, good coverage, very stable, many features and options. Capable of running 3rd party firmware such as DD-WRT, Tomato, Melin, etc.

Cons: USB ports are 2.0, would like at least one to be 3.0.

Other Thoughts: I was a little hesitant buying a refurbished unit but have no complaints so far. This unit replaced my TP-Link WR-1043ND which worked great until I bricked it trying to update DD-WRT. Asus updates their firmware regularly, and since the stock firmware provides all the features I need, I'll stick with that for now. My internet download speed is limited to 15 MB so I probably could have gone with something much cheaper, however, most low end units don't have the features I need such as VPN, FTP, port forwarding, USB, Guest access, etc. Although the coverage is adequate and much the same as my previous router, I was expecting to see a little more power out. I have to assume that Asus has the power out set for the maximum allowed by FCC regulations. I don't have any devices (yet) that use the 5Ghz band so I disabled that for now. Asus provides a stand that allows the unit to be oriented either vertically or horizontally. Setting it up vertically allowed me to bend the antennas down slightly for better coverage downstairs. This unit does not have a fan and does run a little warm. Probably not an issue in the short term but heat does affect reliability in the long run. To be fair, most higher end dual band routers run a little warm and don't have fans either.

5 out of 5 eggsMajor WIFI Upgrade

Pros: Fast Speed on AC
Easy Configuration with lots of options
Stable after firmware upgrade
Upgradeable antenna

Cons: Last years model
Large footprint
Needs older browser or Chrome

Other Thoughts: Fast with lots of configuration options. DHCP reservations are point and click (one button option). 866 speeds to most .11AC enabled equipment. Some .11N get 450. 300 for older .11N devices. Use Chrome or older IE to get best results.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good!

Pros: Anytime you buy a refurbished item its like rolling the dice in a casino, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

The reviews of this item was 50/50 but I knew the review of the AC66R/U brand new were very high. So far I have been very pleased. I bought it to bridge my current low end FIOS gateway so that I could get better WIFI coverage in my house. the UI is very user Friendly and easy to use while still having advanced features if needed. Coverage as you would expect is very good.

Cons: Not really a con but you will most likely need to update the firmware as I did.

Other Thoughts: Very good future proof router even if you currently don't have any AC devices.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Speeds

Pros: Supports custom firmwares, speeds are excellent over 5GHz connected to my Surface Pro 3.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I have a RT-N66U as well, I was experiencing issues with WiFi on that router in the past but the Merlin Firmware fixed all that, So I decided to get the AC model as an AP. Immediately put the Merlin firmware on it, haven't had a single issue with signal strength or anything.

4 out of 5 eggsworks fine now after some firmware issues

Pros: Router came in a generic white box as expected since it is refurbished. Not DOA. Unit looks brand new as I couldn't find any blemishes. All the lights work and powered on as soon as I plugged it in. Exact same unit as RT-AC66U except the label on the bottom says AC66R. However, on the same label on another spot, it says AC66U. Quick internet search clearly states that AC66U and AC66R are the same unit but one is sold thru retail outlets (R) and the (U) version is sold through internet vendors. Although at this point, the distinction is moot. With a promo code Newegg had a couple of weeks ago, got it for significantly less than a Benjamin.

Cons: Shipping firmware was an older version numbered 3.0.0.4.374.5517. I immediately upgraded to the latest firmware 3.0.0.4.376.3754. (What's with the crazy version numbers??) That's when the "fun" started. See other thoughts below for what I mean by "fun".

Other Thoughts: After the firmware was upgraded to the latest version, I set the unit into Access Point mode since all I needed out of this unit was the highly rated radios, as tested by the good folks at SmallNetBuilder. With the latest firmware, the highest link rate I can get was 130mb/s with a throughput of about 40mb/s. This was in both the 2.4Ghz band and the 5Ghz band using my new MacBook Air that has 802.11AC capabilities and standing 2 feet away from it. I reset the router pushing the reset button on the back, changed wireless channels, change wireless mode, enable and disable WPA2 security and still no love. It's stuck at 130mb/s link rate. At this point, I'm thinking that 2 of the 3 data streams are dead and I'm getting single stream connection. Perhaps that's why this unit is refurbished. Two of the 3 radios are dead! So I thought. Then as a last ditch effort before I pack it up and ship it back for an exchange, I thought to try an older version of the firmware. I read on some forum that firmware version 3.0.0.4.376.3602 breaks the 5Ghz band so went even older with version 3.0.0.4.376.2524 dated 9/9/14. Then magically, all is well. My MacBook Air links up at 867mb/s (limit of my MacBook Air since it can only receive 2 streams of AC signal at 433mb/s per stream) and on N protocol on the 2.4Ghz band links up at 300mb/s (again only 2 streams of N at 150mb/s per stream). Throughput is somewhere north of 200mb/s on AC and 80-90mb/s on 2.4Ghz N protocol, which the best you can really hope for on wireless N. Range is also excellent but more importantly, at a significant signal attenuation, speeds are still around 60mb/s, plenty fast streaming the most demanding content like blu-ray.

So, in all, I'm keeping it and not messing with the firmware again. I can't really comment on the other functions of the router since I am only using it as an access point.

For my main router at the other end of the house, I'm using a Netgear R6250, which has an upgraded Broadcom BCM4708X cpu vs this Asus' Broadcom BCM4706 cpu. Also, the Netgear has a much more robust parental control feature that uses OpenDNS, something this ASUS lacks. With 2 school age kids in the house, having a robust parental control is very important to me.

1 out of 5 eggsSecond Review

Pros: It worked great until it didn't.

Cons: It worked as my main router for about a year and then I began having problems with it as a router. I set it up as a wireless access point after that and it worked ok for another 8 or 9 months and now does not work at all. Performed numerous hard resets, but to no avail. I am read that a lot of other people had the same problems with their refurbished routers. I gave it five stars a year and a half ago, but you would think a product should work longer than that. I think ASUS quality is taking a nosedive from a lot of other reviews I have been reading about their newest routers, and I would consider this fairly new. I caution you to buy at your own risk.

Other Thoughts: I am looking for a new wireless AC Router and will switch my present TPLink Archer 7 into my wireless access point. I like to be able to cover any room in my house as well as outside. My TPLink has been reliable, though I bought it new. Not sure what brand I will buy but ASUS has moved down the list.

2 out of 5 eggsFast when it works

Pros: - Fast
- Easy setup

Cons: - Runs hot

Other Thoughts: I gave it 2 star because it was actually fast when it is working. With 3 computers wired in, 2 mobile phones, and a Chromecast, the router seems to shutdown when all 6 devices are making some activity at the same time. What is interesting is that this happens when 2 more devices are connected to the router.

I have also updated the firmware, rolled back to a previous one, and installed the Merlin firmware. All of the firmware resulted in the same demise of overheating. I have also turned off many of the promising features included in the firmware to alleviate some of the stress from the CPU but it all concludes to the same issue.

I have been happy with any Asus product except for this one and I would highly recommend anyone to look for another router beside this.

5 out of 5 eggsFast & Stable

Pros: The Refurb unit was in like new condition

Its been very fast and has not dropped a connection in my first 2 weeks of using it.

With an updated Intel 7265 AC adapter in my laptop, my download speed as measured by SpeedTest.net improved from an already good 54Mbps to an outstanding 118Mbps (combination of both the new router and new adapter.)

Cons: I had assumed the Asus Firmware ASUSWRT was a lightly skinned version of DD-WRT, sort of like Buffalo's WRT firmware is. But its an entirely different interface. I'm not wild about the firmware interface or clarity, but it works.

Other Thoughts: Great deal on the refurb unit of $99 plus a $10 rebate making it a net $89.

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for this inconvenient timing of your issue. What is the exact issue with it? Does your AC adapter LED still lite up when plugged into different sockets in the house? To discuss this matter with me please send an email and place case number N150154381 in the subject line for reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.
