3 out of 5 eggsPower Switch Failed

Pros: Nice industrial design, decent software, regular firmware updates

Cons: Though I've owned this refurbished router for more than a year it has rarely been cycled on or off, fewer than 10 times in any event. Even so the push button power switch failed. I awoke one morning without network and upon investigation learned that the switch failed-without being touched or otherwise meddled with. With some cellophane type tape the router works but its hardly an elegant solution. The generous 2 year warranty doesn't apply since it's a refurbished unit. So now I have to purchase another router--or live with a taped switch.

Also, this unit gets extremely hot, almost painful to the touch.

Other Thoughts: OK performance

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Great range, features and performance. USB ports for connecting external storage and sharing over network and FTP work well. Guest networks, multiple SSIDs.

Cons: Runs a bit warm.

Other Thoughts: I bought this router to replace a shoddy Trendnet 731-BR which I bought to replace a dead Trendnet 632-BRP. Loved the 632; set it up once and never had to touch it but after a few years it finally died. The 731 I replaced it with was a nightmare. Constantly dropped signal even over ethernet and I had to restart it almost daily. I couldn't even get signal 20 ft away through 1 wall!

So after dealing with that for a few months I had enough and purchased this ASUS router. This is easily one of the best purchases I have made for the family. First thing I did was install Merlin's firmware and it has been rock solid. I connected my external WD 2TB to it and set it up as an NFS share and now everyone can access the data over the network. I get full bars throughout the house and outside. Steam’s in-home streaming service works great over the 5ghz band to my laptop.

There's really nothing bad that I can say about it other than the fact that it does run warm -- about 63C on the 5ghz band idle. I bought a Deepcool N1 laptop cooler to place it on and elevated it to provide better airflow and now I'm getting around 52C. I'm very happy with this router so far, and to me it's worth paying a little extra to avoid the headaches.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking fine for me!

Pros: Good price
Fast
Good firmware

Cons: runs warm

Other Thoughts: The unit I recieved, at first, I was unable to get to the firmware to set it up. Turns out the previous person who had this, had changed the default gateway IP.. Figured that out after some hand wringing and worrying.

Dear Newegg, would it be to much to Hard Reset these things before sending them out ? Docked one star for that.

I HR the router and installed the latest firmware. All seems to be working just find. I had worried about this, after reading the horror stories here about the refurb units. Also, the previous "owner" of this device obviously was tech savvy, and returned it, so I was afraid that they had discovered something wrong....

But at this time, it seems to be working fine. I had planned on upgrading the firmware to DD-WRT, but the stock firmware is actually quite good. So far, the firmware does everything I need. If I need to upgrade, I will probably go with the Merlin version of the firmware.

This router replaced my old, reliable, Linksys WRT-54G, so you can imagine, my speeds with 60mbps Comcast went way up wirelessly, from about 10mbps, to 57mbps (full speed). I am happy. The range is a little better as well. The 5ghz range is only a little less than the 2.4ghz range. In my one floor, 3/2 house, it covers the entire floor plan, plus most of the yard with a usable signal.

5 out of 5 eggsNoticeable improvement over old wireless N

Pros: This router replaced a D-link dir 655 wireless N that was on its last legs. It has better range and throughput which is exactly what I needed. Newegg is awesome as always - great price and fast shipping.

Cons: Although range and transfer speeds are better, they're not the extreme boost in performance I was hoping for.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: My speeds and range increased dramatically over my single band N router several years old. Had to make some tweaks. Used inSSIDer to scan neighboring wireless networks. Forced channel frequency to least congested on 2.4 GHz radio. Also raised Tx transmission levels. Kept channel width default. Removed b/g protection. Removed legacy support by forcing N and AC only.

Cons: Certificate errors. HTTPS issues.

I turned on the HTTPS option and could no longer log in. Yes, I used Asus' default 8443 port. In Firefox, I had to manually remove the certificate I had, then add a new exception. It's an easy fix and it works fine now, but it took me quite awhile to figure out what the issue was. It was a little frustrating, but I'm keeping my rating at 5 eggs.

Other Thoughts: I upgrade my router once every 3-4 years, so I've only had about 4 in my lifetime. I can easily say, this is the best router I've ever owned. Has so many options. DDNS works great. VPN works great. I tried the USB storage - awesome. Plus, I bought this from NewEgg refurbished for $89.99. I feel like I got a great deal!

5 out of 5 eggsWorked just fine when received

Pros: Bought Refurb Newegg via E-bay. Was worried based on earlier reviews, but received unit was clean and unmarked, and I had no issues with it - functioned 100%. Was able to install and get DD-WRT working. Follow instructions EXACTLY to do so - if you fail to wipe NVRAM a second time you will think the router WAN is broken, when it is actually just fine/a DD-WRT bug.

Cons: Not really a fan of the stock firmware, but since I use DD-WRT, didn't care

Other Thoughts: Can't speak to the longevity angle, but at least initially the refurb is working fine.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: Really good range
Overall quality
Looks good
Sits upright in a sturdy mount

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Was easy to set up. The software is the best I have seen for a router.
I bought this at a very good refurbished price. Had I known that a couple weeks later I could have bought the AC68 for forty dollars more I would have purchased it instead.
I have no AC peripherals to try but the dual channel works well.
I had a lengthy discussion with an Asus tech about any problems they had that led to having these refurbished items. He informed me that the largest share of these routers returned for repair had the software corrupted, most from people not following the instructions. He said the firmware is very complex and involved and if not installed in sequence it can even brick the router.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks!

Pros: On Newegg 'Shell Shocker' I found RT-AC66R 802.11ac routers by Asus for less than an 802.11ac wifi adapter (with free shipping). These routers are a refurbished 'one model back from Asus's newest' 811.2ac router. The 5 GHz radio in this product is identical to the latest ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless-AC1900 Dual Band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac product. I bought two (2).

I set up the routers to be in direct 5 GHz communication with each other in 'Media Bridge' mode. The router downstairs at my demark is plugged into my cable modem. The router upstairs has all my computers plugged into it by Ethernet cables.

That the routers are identical and that this configuration is 'built-in' to the router's firmware made this setup easy to configure. I burned the latest firmware rev: 3.0.0.4.374_5517 into both routers. I'm having NO problems.

I'm getting a reported >850 Mbps router-to-router. I've got a 1.2ms average ping from my desktop upstairs to the router one floor below. That's about a 10m, vertical diagonal through a wood frame building. I shut-off the 2.4 GHz radios on the routers, and received a minor speed boost. Fortunately my smartphone and laptop are both 5GHz compatible.

Having more than one computer, this router-to-router 802.11ac connection was less expensive than buying 3-4 802.11ac wifi adapters-- likely provides more throughput too.

Cons: It took a long time to aim the antennas. There are many configurations, and no documentation on the ideal setup. I gave up tuning at 800 Mbps. (I would really like to get 900 Mbps.)
