1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY

Pros: None

Cons: 1 egg and I'm being generous on the basis that I am a 15+ year satisfied Asus customer. Right out of the box this thing has done little more than give me problems. First off I couldn't get it to access the Asus server for firmware update. No biggie there I just did a manual upgrad. From there it just went down hill. At first it seemed to configure properly. and easily However we immediately discovered a random inability to access various web pages, both non-secure and secure. This was totally random. I could access a site, and then next time I tried I could not. As significant as this issue was my first priority was to enable us to remote access our security system. Port forwarding was setup & all procedures were followed correctly with no positive results. I even allowed the surveillance systems tech support to log into the router to see if they could find a problem. They found no issues, all settings were correct. Finally I called Asus tech support but for all the good it did I would have been better off calling Burger King. Their "tech" had no answers and no interest in logging into my router to see if he could find a problem. I finally decided to do a RMA. I unplugged the router and was about to disconnect it when I decided to try one more thing. I plugged it back in and all of a sudden it allowed remote access to our cameras. However, it still is blocking various websites. Several sites, such as canyouseeme, and others (3 of which we MUST be able to access) have been consistently blocked. I'm still researching the issue but so far with no results. I have lost $$ on this job. Even if I finally resolve this issue without having to do a RMA, I could never in good conscience recommend this router to anyone. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. This is the first time in 15+ years I've had a problem with an Asus product, and the first time I've had to contact Asus tech support. I still highly recommend Asus products, but their tech support stinks. And the AC66 series routers are thumbs down.

Other Thoughts: Another tech friend of mine has the Asus AC87. He's a happy camper, wished I had gone with that.

2 out of 5 eggsFirmware Nightmare!

Pros: Very fast compared to my old DLINK wireless N router. Very sleek looking design.

Cons: I have been a fan of Asus products for about a year now, even used mostly Asus components when I built my latest desktop. That being said, I am no longer getting that warm fuzzy this is high quality hardware vibe. I updated the firmware as soon as I had it setup and the 5ghz band completely disappeared from all of my wireless devices. After doing some research I found out that this was a well known issue with others complaining. I then installed a slightly older (1 version back) version of the firmware which brought the 5ghz broadcast back but killed the NAT Loopback feature. More research and found this was a well known issue with that version of firmware. What's going on Asus? Are we beta testers for you? I paid a lot of money for this router and I would expect it to work. I wasted over 12 hours screwing with this thing before finally reverting to the original firmware that it came installed with. Buyers beware when updating firmware, I no longer trust anything that they will release. Absolutely ridiculous!

Other Thoughts: This would have gotten a 5 egg review had the firmware actually worked. I am blown away that they are releasing firmware with such huge problems. I no longer trust them!

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed with this product

Pros: it's Wasent DOA ...White is a nice option and it has lots of features

Cons: there is a lag and delay (it will react with smooth motion but on a delay) with this router while gaming or streaming and yes it's noticeable and annoying ....oh and it's not cheap

5 out of 5 eggsWell thought out GUI and Design

Pros: I have had this router for a couple of weeks now, and have yet to go through all the settings. I purchased this one to upgrade my Belkin VPN router, since I wanted AC Wireless. Setting up the VPN on this router is super easy, you just have to get your static IP set, or your DDNS, than either create a VPN server or attach to an existing one. Most of the info needed is right there on the GUI page for VPN, and what is not found there is in the manual which you can get to by clicking the link at the bottom of the screen. The wireless speeds are great, whether you are on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. One of the best features of this router to me is the free Dynamic DNS name. No more paying to have your IP updated and tied to a domain name. This cuts down on the cost of me running a cloud server for computing and storage. The 2.5GHz and 5GHz are not on a single SSID, you can assign up to 3 independent SSIDs to each band, using different names and encryption. It also allows you to make guest accounts with either band and choose whether they can access your Intranet or not, along with being able to apply the accounts for a particular amount of time, then they will shut off until you turn it back on. The GUI is very clean, and easy to navigate. There are a ton of options, but the layout makes them easy to go through. The main page has a simplified network status listing, that shows you how many devices are on you network currently, and what those devices are. This along side the Network Monitoring page, it makes it easy to now who is on the network and how long. The router itself is an aesthetically designed piece of hardware. It has 3 removable antennas that can be positioned in any direction you choose to get the best signal coverage. It also has a stand that snaps into the back of the router in the VESA holes. You can use the stand, you could mount it on the wall with the VESA holes, or you could mount it to the back of a VESA compatible monitor or TV. It has 2 USB ports for storage or printers, but unfortunately they are only 2.0. I would have preferred 3.0, but I guess 2.0 will be fine since I use ethernet for my NAS. The USB ports, according to the packaging, are able to use an Android mobile phone, and use the internet connection to broadcast it over the WiFi. I have yet to try this feature, but it is an awesome idea IMHO. I also like the fact that ASUS released the source code for the firmware, so if you want to get into it and modify some things, you are free to do so. It is also DD-WRT compatible if you want a modified GUI but don't know how, or have the time to mod it yourself.

Cons: Other than the USB ports being 2.0 and not 3.0, I haven't found any cons to this router yet. I will run it through the paces and update my review later on if anything significant arises.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a really excellent router. The cost is comparable to other routers in its class, though I think this one is the best bang for your buck. It is a really good deal if you can find it on a combo sale, like i did, and get this router and a Motorola SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem. With this combo, I was able to upgrade my home network in preparation for IPv6 and to 1Gbps from the modem down to the blu-ray.

5 out of 5 eggsSurprised by quality of Software

Pros: Excellent range but i was most impressed with the quality of ASUS's firmware. I bought this specific router so that I could flash OpenWRT/DD-WRT but once I started using it I did not see the need. Everything is laid out logically. This router replaced my old DLink DIR-825. The difference in quality is like night and day. The DLink would drop connections once too many (15+) clients had connected. No problems like this so far with the ASUS.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Works fantastically.
I bought this to replace my old Linksys WRT54GL.
User interface is both easy to use and allows a high level of configuration.
Doesn't really make any noise, and is only a little warm, but well within a safe heat range.
The stand works well, and I think the helps with cooling.
For my needs I probably would have been fine with purchasing the RT-N66R, but I went with this model to get the AC support with the hope I can use it a little bit longer than if I only had N support.
You can access the router by typing in ''. Much more user friendly than typing the IP address.

Cons: Would be nice if it had a wall mount.
Would also be nice if you had an option to turn off the LEDs.
