1 out of 5 eggsNot again

Pros: I guess it worked as a firewall for the year and a half until the unit started failing. (Lost packets, inability to handle data, SUPER slow throughput when one outside VPN active.)

Cons: We installed a TZ 205 to act as a firewall over two small LANs and to allow one VPN user to each network. (Two small businesses sharing building space, separate networks behind a shared firewall.)

Because my VPN expertise is limited, we hired a SONICWall certified tech to complete the install. The unit never worked properly for the second VPN user and now, after a year and a half, it is failing. Over a thousand bucks into purchasing and installing this little unit, buying the second license and the subscription (crazy expensive) and now its dying. Might as well have just burned the cash.

I will never again buy a Sonicwall product.

4 out of 5 eggsOK....but

Pros: Small, Compact, seems to work well. Install wizard works good. I have owned previous sonic walls, so the configuration was not a mystery.

Cons: Claims to be 12000 connections, Only 10000. Subtract 1 egg for misrepresentation.

Other Thoughts: Dell customer service sucks. When trying to contact them to point out the error in the specification, the only reply was that your support agreement is expired. This is on the 6th day of owning the device.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat reputation but poor quality

Pros: Good color - very clean looking and the unit is shipped in a gorgeous cardboard box. The plastic wrap surrounding the unit seemed to be high quality and very transparent. The adhesive tape securing the package appeared to be applied straight and with nary a wrinkle.

Cons: This unit was selected as a more high-throughput option to the 7 year-old Linksys RV082 router. Sadly, this router is a far cry slower that the old Linksys. In actual speed tests the SonicWall is faster than the Linksys, but the time required to load web pages, S/R email, or download a file is much slower with the SonicWall TZ-205. And if you'd like to talk to someone for support or maybe allow an experienced tech to look at configuration in a remote session, it ain't happening.

Other Thoughts: I had great success with other SonicWall routers and security appliances, but this one has found a home on the DNU (do not use) lit. It's a great router, it just doesn't do the job it was intended to.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the easiest firewall i ever configured

Pros: Wizard is awesome, simple and right to the point . For those who plan to use it an don't know how buy support 8x5 for around $100 a year. I am sure after a year you going to feel comfortable with it.

Cons: For some reason sonicwall in general is not friendly with VoIP and needs tailoring.

Other Thoughts: Its great for small business applications.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Firewall

Pros: These are great units. I have installed many of them and have 20+ years as a tech. They can be a bit complicated to figure out but that is because it is very configurable and has a lot of options.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Please ignore the 1 star review. If you can't figure out how to sign into it then it will be over your head on how to configure it. :)

1 out of 5 eggsTotal rip-off

Pros: The box looks nice. (I was not able to use it so I don't know how it works.)

Cons: This unit comes with no support. And without support you cannot log in to the firewall. So you can't configure & use it.

I think it's really sleazy that they sell you this box, then tell you that you need to pay more to use it.

5 out of 5 eggspowerful but complex

Pros: Purchased this to get a step up in security for our small business office (10 users) for a reasonable price. The hardware is handling the traffic of our office without any noticeable drop off in speed and we have full stateful packet inspection turned on including all the security features.

The interface is slick, well laid out and responsive. You can do very complex things that are normally only available in much higher end firewalls.

Cons: The price you pay is only for the basics. Expect to pay about $330/yr more if you want all the services they offer with this unit. I didn't deduct an egg for this because this was pretty obvious to me when I bought the router and paying annually for dynamic security services ensures that there are people at those places maintaining it at a high level.

I wish this device had sonicwall's new geosecurity feature where you can block entire country IP blocks. It wasn't clear to me from their website that this model didnt have it. If you want that, you have to move up to the tz 215 (which sucks, they need to bring that feature to the 205).

Other Thoughts: No way to sugarcoat this, IT'S COMPLICATED. It has the interface of a much more powerful router and unless you are a network engineer or have experience in this field, this will be very difficult to wrap your head around and configure. They offer a few wizards to help you along the way but even the wizards require some level of knowledge and are inefficient in adding way more rules than are needed. Again, I didn't deduct an egg for this because sonicwall gives you a test interface to see (so you know what you are getting into) on their website and the documentation is very good / complete. However, let me repeat, don't buy this unless you have the expertise to use it or plan to spend a significant amount of time learning lots of complex network topics. Things that are simple with lesser routers like NAT port translation require MANY more steps.

We don't use the VPN feature at all (so far) so I can't give any notes on how well that worked.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Home firewall

Pros: This is the perfect SOHO firwirewall for anyone with a cable or dsl connection. I installed mine and had it fully operational with 7 computers and a cable connection in less than an hour. The instructions are simply, yet the firewall options are plentiful. I needed this for my home network because wireshark had told me there were people secretly controling my personal files and folders on my personal pc.

Cons: Learning how to use all of the features.

Other Thoughts: This is a powerful little firewall that I would DEFINITELY recommend to anyone with a home network. I an thinking of buying another one for my brother's home network.
