Rock Solid
- Pros: Installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix and it just flies. Keyboard just feels right. Screen is nice and crisp. Speakers work good enough. It is great to take to conferences. It gets a lot of looks.
- Cons: No bluetooth. Linpus Linux by default. Under Ubuntu and Cheese, taking pictures is fine, but recording video does not work.
- Other Thoughts: Small, Stylish, Linux = great. In fact I have stopped using my desktop and just use it most of the time
Windows is SO slow with an SSD
- Pros: - Webcam
- Boots quickly - SSD read speed - Clear screen - Linpus does what it's supposed to do
- Cons: - When I installed Windows XP Home, performance went down dramatically. Anything that requires data to be written to the SSD slows the netbook dramatically. I wish I had gotten the HDD version.
- Trackpad takes time to get used to
- Other Thoughts: When I bought this, it was $240 on Newegg with free shipping. At that price, it was worth it. At the current price of $300, it's worth it as long as you're willing to stay with Linux or replace the SSD.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find 1.8" hard drives...
Great little netbook
- Pros: *Price. At $240, this thing was a steal
*Performance per Power. The Intel Atom270 has turned out to be an awesome little low power processor. I can play 720p x264s, light image editing, word processing, browsing, light game playing, etc on it with no slow downs. I was a little weary of it at first, but I have no complaints *1gb of ram for this price is great *Read speed from the SSD is acceptable *Expandable memory *Screen - bright and crisp. It may be small, but the 1024x600 screen has plenty of resolution for on the go computing. You can also hook it up to an external monitor at decent resolution. *Very moddable. (though voids warranty). It's expandable to 1.5gb ram, and you can replace the harddrive using compact flash, a 1.8" ipod drive or a few other ways. You can also add bluetooth and other devices. *Keyboard has been shrunk with focus on keeping used keys large. The keyboard is very funcitonal, but takes some getting used to *3 usb ports *Lightweight
- Cons: *Linpus lite - it may be ok for the casual user, but is based on an older version of fedora (old version of open office, firefox, some other software) and lacks a lot of features for power users. I almost immediately installed Ubuntu 8.10, which works great
*Write speed to the SSD. The write speed is known to be terrible. There are a lot of tweaks you can make to keep writing to the ssd to a minimum (use the ram for tmp). The slow write speed is unnoticeable for most normal use, and is tolerable.
- Other Thoughts: For the technical user, this netbook provides a great starting point for a good netbook.
For the casual user, the netbook shipped from the factory provides a fully functional netbook for on the go office work and web surfing. For heavy users without much technical knowledge: this probably isn't the netbook for you. I like the performance (except the SSD). expandability, low cost of the Aspire One, and am thoroughly happy with my purchase.
