what a wicked cool thing!
- Pros: SMALL!!!! This is such a great little gadget! It surfs, it plays music, and it will soon be running a server.
I bought the Linux version to force myself to learn it, and i quickly found myself dumping xandros to go for Ubuntu (gutsy, at the time of writing Hardy is not quite stable).
It emulates my roms well, and even comfortably runs compiz-fusion. Which is cool. I don't think i have really had any problem with it so far.
- Cons: Screen size. I kinda wish that the 900 series was the same price as this one, cause I don't find it worthwhile to spend 500 dollars on a 9 inch screen and an extra coupe of gigs harddrive space (that's what external laptop drives are for). For that price I would just as soon buy a regular laptop...
It's kinda funny actually cause after i do some work on it, and then go to my wifes 17in laptop, the world suddenly seems so huge!
- Other Thoughts: I didn't get a case with mine. My father who spent the extra dollars on the 900 series got this cr@ppy microfiber looking thing which i suppose could be considered a case...
There is a good solution however. This particular laptop is just about the same size as a portable DVD player (roughly 9 inches). So what I did was I purchased a Vaultz DVD player case and tote it around like that. I spent 30 dollars on it at sears and it holds my power chord, an ethernet cable in case I should ever need on, and just about anything else small that I might ever need (think 4, 4gig SD cards to swap OS' on the fly, radio shack sells a nice little case for 2 bucks). No room for a mouse though...
I would also dump xandros. It's too tinker-toy and is only great if you don't want to think about things. Ubuntu 7.10 rocks and there great sites (eeeuser.com) among others that are full of information on how to do just about anything you would want, including modding a touch screen into it!
Incredibly convenient
- Pros: Great for word processing, web-browsing, email, and reading (pdf files, blogs, articles on-line), and using zotero. I was surprised how convenient it is to have a laptop that weighs 2 lbs, about as much as a hardcover book, that I can carry around and I don't even notice I'm carrying it. Another benefit of its being so small is that it's inconspicuous, I can take it out and type notes during a class or a talk and it's not distracting. The boot time is so short (using the defualt linux OS, anyway) that I can pop it out and access info (bus schedules, notes, whatever) in a minute or less, and I don't even need a table or chair to support it, I can just hold it in one hand while standing. It's supposed to be shock-resistance, and while I haven't dropped it or thrown it against the wall, I've been throwing my bag (w/ eeePC inside, not too much padding) in the milk crate in back of my bike and riding around for hours, and it's been over a month that I've had it and no signs of damage.
- Cons: The touchpad is clumsy but good enough for simple tasks like word processing. Some programs have crashed on me (firefox, with certain webpages using too much/bad java script, adobe acrobat reader after the computer goes in and out of sleep mode). Other programs like the photo editor had trouble, I think because the processing power isn't enough to handle serious work. Some browser extensions and webpages that rely on frames are awkward because the screen is too small to fit all the frames in the size the programs seem to expect.
- Other Thoughts: Excellent student computer, excellent for people who want a lot of mobility and the physical convenience of having a tiny laptop, and don't need to do processing power-intensive things. The keyboard hasn't been a problem for me, I have more or less average-size hands, I don't know if it would be a problem for somebody with thick fingers or large hands. I type in dvorak and I figured out how to switch over.
Pretty good for the price
- Pros: Small, light and easy to use. It's a good buy for the Kids to surf the net if you're adapt to different operating systems easily.
- Cons: The white one doesnt have a memory door like the black one. Note opening the memory door voids the warranty but it would have been nice to have the option. Also the touch pad could be a little more responsive. If you have big fingers get a mouse. Also battery life is very short. Keep the cable handy.
- Other Thoughts: I bought it so I can read e-books. The wireless NIC is an added bonus and open office is very useful. I considered other electric e-book readers but found that the screen size and the laptop functionality made the price more attractive.
