2 out of 5 eggsLook good on paper, worse in your hands.

Pros: Very portable. Fits in the front pocket of the new laptop bag I got. Very cute, definitely a conversation starter. Speakers are very loud, considering their size. Comes built in with most of the software you'd expect/use. Whisper-silent. Touchpad is very easy to get used to.

Cons: The mini-keyboard is the one reason why I recommend shoppers NOT to buy the EEE. This keyboard is just too inconvenient to type on. The squished keyboard reduces the size of many key keys, like the apostrophe, the left function keys, like the shift and the tab keys. The tilde button is moved to the right of the escape key, making typing numbers awkward. The sensitivity of the keys aren't even, requiring you to type in the middle of each key, which doesn't work out well when you type softer or with less powerful fingers (big problems are the 'A', ' ' ', and the spacebar). The backspace key is also a problem. The laptop heats up pretty easily, with wi-fi on (you wouldn't even think of getting this if it didn't have wi-fi), and the screen size seems lacking, since you wonder why the speakers are built on the sides of the screen instead of somewhere below. It supports webcam, but doesn't come with one, leaving a feeling that you're missing something. The battery power is weak, but expected

Other Thoughts: I am a college student and I bought this netbook (pink) because my cousin recommended it, but this keyboard really gets on my nerves. I'll probably buy a USB keyboard for it and use it as a digital notepad for class. Which is why I bought it in the first place (my typing is infinitely faster than my writing), but this netbook's flaws still irk me. I would advise you not to buy it if you type fast.

4 out of 5 eggsJust what it's made for

Pros: A very clean, neat package. Fast bootup, stylish design, and easy customization makes this the essential portable device for those on the go.

Cons: My only extra thought was in the color. The green is not exactly sage like in many pictures, but closer to lime (almost neon green)? But at least it's not white like the rest of my co-workers' EEEs. I can spot mine from anywhere. I clock the battery life at 1.5-2 hours average, which is okay as long as I can find a plug somewhere if I'm working all day.

Other Thoughts: I've been watching this item for nearly a half-year so I knew what I was getting myself into. Some folks are apt to push their EEEs to the limit; be it playing games or through other apps. That's fine, but it's not made to compete against a brand-new gaming notebook, for instance. The keyboard is smaller than typical, but it only takes a few minutes to get used to it (I wear medium-sized gloves). If you have large, burly construction site hands you should consider other notebooks. Look around online for tutorials on how to unlock full desktop mode (the simple mode gets silly after a while) and to install VLC player if you want to view divx files. The default media player has a serious audio lag when playing any file over a minute long. I've originally bought this to write when I travel, but its portability has made me bring it almost everywhere I go! I also recommend picking up a sleeve/soft case made for those little portable DVD players, they fit the EEE PC just right. Altog

5 out of 5 eggsultra portable

Pros: run very good with xp also has instruction book to guide you
highly portable can take anywhere wifi also radio has good range. if you want more storage space just get a 4gb mmc card its only 17.99 then you will have 6 gb total. you will love this thing with windows xp its like a big laptop

Cons: none only that it comes with lenux . you can only use "windows xp sp2" newer versions of xp with sp3 will not work
i tried it believe me

Other Thoughts: i'm burned out on people that think that for $299.00 there going to get a fast pc . you have to set your expectations
alot lower when your spending this amount of money. i mean
its very inexpensive can't buy any kind of pc for that price.

4 out of 5 eggsWonderful Taskmaster....

Pros: Throwing around a light weight distribution of Xandros and having shortcuts to most of the major features on the startup menus it was almost ready to go out of the box. Screen was crystal clear and sharp. Touchpad is very responsive. Mouse hooked up with no config.

Cons: Not many. The screen is small (Duh.) The keyboard is small (Duh) and it is not expandable like many other units. But this is not a work horse machine. It is a task machine. Will be hard to find a snug but protective bag for it.

Other Thoughts: Is a great machine for basic internet and such. Seems to handle complex pages and most every web app I could think of.

2 out of 5 eggsmemory not upgradeable!

Pros: Very cool in a lot of ways, but I had to bring the ratings down to make people aware of its non-upgradeability.

Cons: Memory is not upgradeable as it is with the 4g. This is not clear in the description of either model and is a severe limitation of the computer. I was hoping to have a wicked fast tiny computer with 2 gigs of ram and no swap file, but instead I have a computer that was intentionally crippled by the manufacturer.

Other Thoughts: My advice is to read the reviews on any product you buy from newegg, because crucial information you need may be unintentionally omitted from the description they give. It could mean the difference between ending up with a product worthy of a rating of 5 or one worthy of a rating of 2, like it did here!

5 out of 5 eggsnice

Pros: EXTREMELY portable
3 USB 2.0 ports (surprising on such a tiny machine!)

Cons: Small screen can truncate some legit popups (judicious use of "tab" usually solves that problem)
The keyboard is pretty cheap - some of the keys "wiggle" which makes me worry about long-term durability

Other Thoughts: I would not buy this machine to be used as my main computer. However, it is nice for traveling and light use. If you are looking for a highly portable secondary computer, I highly recommend considering this one.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great size, love every minute I spend on it. I have a 2g installed Windows XP lite on it, uses most of the memory but I put everthing on the Flash card or External HD. works great

Cons: Battery doesn't last to long seems to rundown evening when the computer is shut off. I get no more then 45min on a charge.

Other Thoughts: If I had to buy again I would invest in the 4G

3 out of 5 eggsnot quite

Pros: solid state drive, ultra-portable, linux

Cons: ridiculously small keyboard makes it almost unusable. 2gb ssd is nice, but far too small to be viable as an sort of serious notebook.

Other Thoughts: this is essentially a great toy... but nothing more than a toy. my iPhone is more of a computer than the eee is.

5 out of 5 eggsKnow what you want and this may be for you!

Pros: Tiny! Very light and portable. SSD instead of HDD increases shock resistance. Operates more quickly on 512MB RAM because of the small disk size/low search time. Expandable by use of SD/SDHC card or external hard drive. Extremely quiet. Clear, sharp screen.

Cons: Tiny! 800x480 resolution may make some webpages look strange (can change to 800x600 but will have to scroll up and down). SSD is only 2GB, so this is not a computer for data storage! Keyboard is very small and may be difficult to type on if you have large hands. SSD and RAM not upgradeable, so don't go looking to mod this one unless you have some serious experience. For more upgradeability, go for the 4G or 4G Surf.

Other Thoughts: This is a great computer if you're looking for something portable that you can carry around for work or school. It's compatible with new enough technology (I run WinXP and Office 2003 on mine, with only a few modifications) that the low spec should not present serious problems. The native Xandros Linux is an interesting OS and seems like a good introduction to Linux. Basically, the EEE 2G Surf is obviously not the top of the line, but it's certainly up there for its price bracket!

4 out of 5 eggs4.5 stars

Pros: For the average shmoe, this is a great machine! It is the ultimate in portability, weighs less than two pounds, and does most everything your average PC needs. I use it for hours a day to web-browse, edit Word docs or web pages, watch movie downloads, write emails, take notes, play some video games...

Cons: The keyboard is a bit cramped and takes some getting used to. Still, I've written long emails and reports on it, and it's been great.
The included Linux operating system does everything I want, but it can be tricky to install some additional applications.

Other Thoughts: Almost perfect... 4.5 stars outta 5! I would not tradde my 2G Surf for a bigger, heavier laptop no matter how many extra features it had.
