Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 901 is designed for people who need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of memory run this Linux system with power to spare.
The 8.9" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. The smaller screen lets you easily use it on a plane or train. A 20GB SSD Flash drive has plenty of room for you work and entertainment files and has no moving parts so it saves power.
Designed to be used anywhere there is a built in WiFi controller that supports 802.11b/g/n protocols. If there is no wireless signal around then you can plug into a standard Fast Ethernet connection. A webcam lets you have video chats. You can use a Bluetooth headset or plug into the audio jacks.

Perfect computing on the go
- Pros: This machine is the perfect 2nd computer. It is tiny, lightweight, has terrific battery life, and does everything an ultra portable laptop needs to do.
- Cons: Yes, the keyboard is small but that is part of the package when you buy a tiny computer. It isn't the easiest thing to type on, but I am getting used to it. Xandros was too basic of an OS for me, so I loaded on Ubuntu which after some extra configuration is working great.
- Other Thoughts: You get exactly what you pay for. A tiny laptop with a tiny keyboard and huge battery life. DON'T buy this if you plan on using it for a primary computer. BUY this if you already have a full sized laptop or desktop that you use to get work done on, and want something little to carry around to check email and browse the web.
Windows guy lovin the linux
- Pros: Speed is great. User interface is easy. Even a Linux novice like me can tweak it a bit and install apps.
Was debating whether to keep the Linux or not. As an IT Mgr, I thought I would have do an XP install. NO WAY. Using Citrix and Remote Control for any Windows needs. Everything else is Web based.
- Cons: I'm finding the the touchpad a little sensitive, or maybe its just my big paws getting in the way. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but to be expected. I can't touch type quickly on it, but thats not why I bought it.
- Other Thoughts: Newegg rocks on the service...as usual.

MY FAVORITE LAPTOP!!
- Pros: It's my favorite laptop ever and I've had several top of the line laptops. However, I use this strictly for fun, not work, but I see no problems after having this fun little machine for almost a year using it on the job. It does quite a lot, much more than you would think and I find something new alll the time. I have now in our home 5 Asus laptops, the kids had to have one, I have 3 (this is my favorite though) you can take them anywhere, the battery life is about 7 hours depending on what your doing and it's so small, you can fit it in your purse, backpack, etc. I've had no problems using Linux it's fun (I had just taken a computer course learning among a million other things, about this particular software and who designed it). Bought mine at NewEgg, received it the next day. Get one, they are a blast for whatever reason you need this.
- Cons: I really can't find any.
- Other Thoughts: Nope......
Asus Eee PC
- Pros: The netbook is quite light, the applications are extremely useful and effective. Internet connection is quite fast, although setting it properly is confusing at first.
- Cons: Shut down function is not working properly. Sometimes it shuts down instantly when I prompt it, but most of the time, I have to hold down the power button to turn off power completely.
wow, I love this thing...
- Pros: This Netbook really rocks. Netbooks are one of the only true inventions of the last years: Very small, light and a thing you always carry with you. This eee PC boots up like a rocket, from pushing the button to full readyness it is 25 seconds!! This is thanks to Linux and you can't get that on any Windows, which seems to be far to fat for Netbooks (that is why you get the almost 10 years old XP instead of Vista). As a pro Linux and Windows user, I first expected the dumbed down Netbook Linux version (Xandros actually) from Asus to be annoying, but it is surprisingly nice: everything with one click, not the endless searching and clicking 5 times in the start menu. You just got these simple tabs. There is Firefox, Thunderbird (mailreader), Pidgin (IM for EVERY network at the same time), tons of games an much much more. I wonder with how much the XP edition gets delivered. I prefer Ubuntu much more than Xandros, but have to say: Asus did well.
- Cons: The keyboard is small, yes. It is worlds better than a blackberry, but still not full size. With a little practice, one can manage even with large hands. And if everything fails, hook up a usb keyboard, there are small size ones. But the netbook is small and should be small. It is a netbook after all, don't mistake this for a full laptop. If you don't have one yet, buy one. This is a netbook, small, smart and always with you. If it gets stolen, not much money is lost. The laptop battery seems to not give the same runtime on Linux than on XP. Common Asus, you could have fixed that!!! Linux is more lightweight than Windows and can be customized much better. Selectingly switching off services and terminating programs gives you great runtime, but for some reason OEMs manage to write power save applets for Windows and totally fail to do it on Linux (*shake head*)...
- Other Thoughts: The boot up time is really wonderful, it is exactly as fast as you like it, just to look up some movie show times or whatever. Now if we had wireless internet everywhere yet, but not by far. I was up in the east bay area and at 2 caffees that did not have wireless. Totally yesterday!
You can of course do a contract with a cell phone provider, but heck, do check out how much that is going to cost you in 1 year, RIDICULOUS!!! I am not ready to pay that much for flat rate data access and neither should you.
This netbook also runs Ubuntu netbook remix, which is a special edition of the distro for Netbooks. It offers tons and tons of more extra programs to install than Xandros that is preinstalled. I don't understand why Asus is not joining forces with Canonical (maker of Ubuntu, nonprofit), they would love to work together. It is clear that Ubuntu is the way to go, it is the clear winner in the Linux Desktop already.
