Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 1000H is designed for people that need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of memory run this Windows XP system with power to spare. A 160GB hard drive has plenty of room for you work and entertainment files.
The 10" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. Because of the smaller screen you can easily use it on a plane or train. The keyboard goes all the way out to the edge of the case and is 95% of the size of a standard keyboard so using it will feel normal.
Designed to be used anywhere there is a built in WiFi controller that supports 802.11b/g/n protocols. If there is no wireless signal around then you can plug into a standard Fast Ethernet connection. A webcam lets you have video chats. You can use a Bluetooth headset or plug into the audio jacks.

What are you using this machine for?
- Pros: - Great Price
- Powerful, efficient - Great portability - Great screen brightness - Spacey keyboard - Touch pad - Input placement - Battery life
- Cons: - Stock OS (GET RID OF IT ASAP!!!)
- Finger print magnet - Keyboard...
- Other Thoughts: The first thing to realize when purchasing this computer is WHY you're purchasing this computer. I'm sure it's been said already but this computer is meant for relatively "light" usage. This does NOT mean "RARE" usage (as I use it everyday for 3-8 hours!) but I am referring to the caliber of processes running.
I love this notebook for the purposes that I use it for: - Staying updated with emails without the inconvenience of a smartphone/pda and luxury of a beautiful screen and keyboard - Communicating with clients/friends/family via AIM, MSN Messenger, and Skype - Surfing the web! (Great speeds) - Taking notes/writing (I'm a journalist and student) - Watching videos, killing time with games, etc.
What I do NOT use this computer for: - Photoshop/any image editing - Video editing - Sound recording/editing
In the end this is a great notebook but it does have it's limits. If you're looking for a convenient machine for menial tasks, this is the one! Want more power? Spend m
Pleasantly Surprised
- Pros: This is the easiest to pack around mobile computer I've owned. It is small, but not so small it reduces its usefulness. Battery life is excellent. Leaving it at defaults, I used my 1000H for a little over 5 hours working after the first charge and it still indicated about 10% battery life left when I was done. It looks good. 160 Gb afforded me the space to dual boot with my favorite linux distro and carry a few Gb of work files and even a few movies and some music. I like the multi touch pad better than other reviewers I've read. In fact, I think it is far more useful than any of the synaptics on my other machines. Finally, it is powerful enough to run everything I usually run on a laptop.
- Cons: It scratches easily. I have a scuff on the front left corner of the lid and I have no idea how I did it. Dust and fingerprints do show but they included a cloth to wipe it down with. Right shift is indeed difficult, but the keyboard can be remapped if it becomes too annoying. The rear feet can be a little uncomfortable when it is in my lap.
- Other Thoughts: Even with the cons, I can't give this machine less than 5 eggs. I've owned a couple of dozen laptops and a few tablets. I never want to carry them. I currently have nine or ten other mobile computers between work and home and I absolutely hate packing them around. This is no bigger than a day-timer. It isn't at all heavy or cumbersome like my other mobiles. It doesn't feel too fragile like my tablets. I think I'll have this machine with me every day. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the machine is also powerful enough to use for work. The Atom processor is a hyperthreader so even light multitasking is A-OK. It's not a powerhouse speed demon but it has plenty of power for both work apps and full screen video.

So Small So Powerful
- Pros: I was lookiing at e-book reader which would support the pdf format the price was close to $400 This product doesn't everything a e-book reader can do and so much more. I can't believe how fast this computer boots up. Just overall a great product. Runs every thing my desktop runs office 2007, nero, test out and cbt nuggents.
- Cons: Fingerprints
- Other Thoughts: Add $23 for 2GB memory stick and your set.
Almost Perfect
- Pros: LONG battery life, bright screen, large hard drive, runs vista great, nice keyboard, every connection you could possibly want (except maybe cellular access)
- Cons: hard drive was partitioned funny, ACPI driver does not work in vista, the trackpad is already starting to sag, the license key has already faded before I got a chance to write it down, battery life is far shorter than promised.
- Other Thoughts: I got this machine for school. I kept bouncing back and forth between this, and the atom powered 900 at best buy. I did not want to carry a full laptop, and batte5 hourry life was top priority. I was lured by the promise of 7-8 hour life, but I am actually getting 4.5 hours. I might get more if I turn the backlight all the way down, cut wifi off, and disable everything in the BIOS, but obviously, I can't do that. I was surprised to see this run vista as well as it does, especially with aero turned on. I like the idea of wireless N being built in, will come in handy when I upgrade my wireless router. The SD card slot is a nice touch, and the 2gb SD card I use for readyboost does not stick out of the slot, unlike my friend's dv2610uu. The glossy back is horrrible, and I already have a number of scratches in it. I also don't like how the trackpad buttons have begun to sink in, and are no longer flush, but I usually use the sweet multitouch to tap anyways.
good for what it is
- Pros: Lightweight, small size, good battery life, SuperHybrid Engine allows for underclocking for battery life, or overclocking while plugged in. Sound quality is good, but not as good as everyone makes it out to be. Webcam built in works well. Loads up very quickly. Wireless-N, but not many places have it yet. Still the card picks up signals very well.
- Cons: Right shift key placement. Using the finger controls on the touchpad (2 fingers for scrolling, etc) will sometimes act as a "back" command on webpages, No optical drive (check out the Sony viao in a similar size, it fits in that one..so i bought an external, no big.), i think the USB ports on the right side is only USB1.1, i get power warnings about it when plugging a USB2.0 device in. Computer will lock up at boot-up from time to time. has a hard time running flash movies/streaming movies on the web, even w/latest drivers. it's also a bad fingerprint magnet like everyone else says.
- Other Thoughts: I haven't used the SD card slot or the VGA port yet. I bought this computer thinking i'd be sitting in Calculus and Physics paying attention and taking notes with it.. but instead all i want to do is play games, and this machine won't really handle too much out there. (UT3, L4D, BF2142, Fallout 3 won't work even at lowest settings. the processor won't handle it). The speakers aren't as good as I would have liked. I also got the 80GB model, because I didnt know they were releasing a 160GB model a week later. Kinda bummed out about that one. Also, i've read that Intel is going to release a dual-core Atom processor soon, or some variant of it. So if you're not in a rush for a new minibook like this, hold off and see if it comes out. Still very glad i bought this thing though, comes in handy when travelling and want to keep in touch. Though i'd like to be able to play games..
