Excellent purchase!
- Pros: Fast, long battery life, excellent wireless. Basically, it does everything it needs to do.
- Cons: It takes a while to get it to where I, personally, feel comfortable with surfing on public wifi. And there is quite a bit of extraneous, pre-loaded software to remove.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this netbook so that I could go to a coffee shop or somewhere else with wifi to do my writing without the distraction of my gaming computer at home. It is absolutely perfect for this. It's cheap, reliable, and doesn't do TOO much.
Great little machine
- Pros: Awesome battery life, I easily get 7 hours with what I would consider "normal" usage (average screen brightness, auto performance mode, wireless enabled and doing standard tasks on the internet, word processing, etc.).
Compact size, this thing easily fits in a backpack, even a purse or medium sized hippack. The included case is perfect for transporting it around in and the power brick is amazingly small, this is something a lot of others probably overlook but that makes a huge difference in portability. I don't know what to accurately compare it to other than to say the power brick is considerably smaller than your average flip phone. Compare this to the size of the power brick that goes along with your average desktop replacement notebook. This thing is way, way more portable. You can lug it around all day and not even know it's there.
- Cons: The CPU has a 667 mHz frontside bus. However the memory bus maxes out at 533 mHz. Asus conveniently does not mention this anywhere in their literature and even a lot of reviews do not mention it because the specification is so well hidden most don't even realize it. But make no mistake about it, even if you purchase 667 mHz memory it will only run at 533 mHz on this netbook! Google for more info if you have any doubts. What this means is that this laptop has at best a very marginal performance advantage over N270 based netbooks so you may do better to simply save your cash and go with one of them.
The wireless N adapter only supports 2.4 gHz operation and not the faster and preferable 5 gHz standard. May not be compatible with some 802.11 n routers. Can be upgraded but that means extra expense for you.
- Other Thoughts: This machine is very usable. No, performance is not on par with a desktop replacement but for email, word processing, watching downloaded videos, etc it is great. I even use SolidWorks on it acceptably. It's high portability enables new usage scenarious that may not have been realistic before. For example I simply toss this in my bag and take it to work with me everyday. In sleep mode it will turn on and be on the internet in 5 seconds.
Runs Vista just fine, though performance improved noticeably with an upgrade to 2 gigs of ram. I would recommend this upgrade if you intend to run Vista. Windows 7 is supposed to be more efficient and could run just fine on 1 gig.
Does not run HD video acceptably. This is the current reality of pretty much all netbooks. Thats why I don't really list it as a con, everyone pretty much knows this already when they purchase the machine.
Backlit keyboard would be nice. Shift key is non-standard size and can cause mistyping.
Amazing Little Machine
- Pros: This is a great little computer. Has a great battery life, about 7-10 hours depending on your useage, 7 using wifi and installing new progams/updating windows, 10 just word processing
- Cons: touch pad is a little sensative, and the shift key on the right side is a little small I keep hitting enter because I'm used to a larger key pad. Getting over it really quickly though.
- Other Thoughts: I'm an engineering student in school and I have classes that use MATLAB a lot so i needed something i could bring to school easily, but still be able to have the power to run MATLAB and do 3-D graphing with it. I am very impressed with this computer. The speakers aren't great. but for listening to music in a small office the more than do the job.
