1 out of 5 eggsOverheating problems

Pros: This machine has excellent specs for a netbook and the full sized screen and keyboard are nice.

Cons: Unfortunately, it tends to overheat and must be shutdown for a few hours. Another issue is that it is easy for the power cord plug to detach slightly so that the machine is no longer on AC power. This tends to happen when the machine is left unattended for an extended period of time and results in a fully depleted battery.

Other Thoughts: I think ASUS tried to put too much into this machine and neglected to equip it with an adequate cooling system. I'll definitely think twice before buying an ASUS machine again.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat netbook for photo and video work

Pros: Dual Core
ION graphics
1366x768 wide screen
decent keyboard
HDMI out
3xUSB
Bluetooth (Moto H17 headset synchs for Skype calls - nice!)
Bright screen very usable outdoors
5 hour battery life (I get 4+ routinely, 5 often)
RAM easily expands to 3 GB (all Win7-32 can use)
Aluminum cover looks nice and seems rugged enough
usable with Lightroom3, 1080P playback and some transcoding

Cons: Graphics memory is shared system memory which does hurt performance
trackpad is disappointing. Get an external mouse (pref BT)
backlit keyboard would make it 10X more usable in the dark
No drivers currently for Win7-64
Can't turn off ION graphics to extend battery when you don't need speed.

Other Thoughts: I picked up a store demo unit of this for $100 off and what a bargain machine! Screen is wonderful: bright, crisp, good colors. Performance is adequate for on the go photo and video work. HDMI output drives a big screen 1080P really well. Good for client video demos. Light and compact, 1/4 the size and weight of the full netbooks I have been lugging around. Wish it had 1024 vertical pixels. Great value for the price! Get the newer drivers (at Asus and Nvidia) for full Nvidia ION support with video codecs, flash, etc. BT works really well, using a phone headset for Skype calls was painless.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Netbook

Pros: Overall a great package and solid performer. The chassis is of excellent build and fit. It feels strong and has little flex. The screen is bright and has a very fine amount of gradient for brightness.

ION platform excellent for streaming HD from others systems and for outputting to HD TV over HDMI.

Cons: 2GB of Memory is not enough in my eyes and I have purchased netbook systems from Gateway with more than 2GB of memory for less money. The NIC does not support gigabit connectivity which is a must for the future.

Other Thoughts: The system can get quite warm on the left side where the CPU/Fan are located. Wireless N only supports up to 150Mb.

ASUS stop with the bloatware already! We don't need 10 applications which all do the same thing but have different GUIs.

4 out of 5 eggs:( bad HD

Pros: Great little laptop. i hated my 10.1" but i love this one. perfect size! decently fast but...

Cons: hard drive went bad at around 5 weeks old. Asus will NOT send u a hard drive! they wanted me to send in the laptop!! for a 45 dollar part? i think not. good excuse to buy a SSD and 4 GB. but still disappointed.

Other Thoughts: could have sworn asus's tech support was in the US but I was wrong. Indian tech support, LAME

4 out of 5 eggsGreat netbook

Pros: - Lightweight
- Clear, 12" screen
- Fast! It's a snappy little machine (after you re-install the OS) and can handle some light gaming thanks to the Nvidia ION card
- 1080p works flawlessly (even flash 1080p on Youtube)
- Nice keyboard, touchpad

Cons: - The Windows 7 image installed is garbage (slow, full of trial/bloatware and useless ASUS applications)
- Mine did NOT include an OS disc, and ASUS flatly refuses to send me one after 3 phone calls to them! It has a "restore partition" which just reinstalls the same bloated OS. One CSR even went so far as to tell me my only option would be to buy another Windows 7 Home Premium license if I wanted a disc.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very happy with this netbook. My last netbook was a 10" Dell Mini, which I found lacking in the speed and screen size departments. The 1201n blows my Dell Mini out of the water.

I would have given it 5 stars if not for ASUS' poor customer service. Eventually I just imaged the drive with Clonezilla (so I can return it to it's factory state if I ever sell it), and acquired a Win7 Home Premium x64 disc. I blew away the partitions and fresh installed Win7 64-bit, using the product key on the sticker on the bottom of the machine. This gives you a legal, activated Windows 7, which runs beautifully without all the bloat!

I highly recommend the 1201n!

5 out of 5 eggsNo more 1201N Silver Newegg?

Pros: I went ahead and let the initial install and setup run because I purchased an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD with this machine and wanted to verify that the netbook was in full working order before voiding the warranty. I installed 4 gigs of G.Skill DDR2 and the SSD, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, got the system configured for the SSD, and it's absolutely AMAZING. This machine has given me zero issues since I got it setup. HD video is amazing on the crisp LED back lit display, and in 1080P on my Bravia over HDMI. Every video game I've installed on it I'm able to play slightly above low settings except for Borderlands, which is a little choppy even if you reduce the resolution. C'est la vie. I wasn't expecting this to be such a great gaming machine anyway. I'm more then pleased.

Cons: This thing is absolute trash out of the box. Mainly because of all the bloatware, just as 99% of all the other reviews say. Even after tweaking the OS and removing some of the trash I was unable to run 1080P over HDMI with a decent frame rate.
Borrow a windows 7 64 bit disc from a friend if you don't have one and reinstall the OS. The included key will work for 64-bit if you don't want to move to ultimate like I did. Don't even bother booting it the first time because it runs the windows 7 32 bit install off it's backup partition on the first boot. It takes FOREVER. This is because it's reading from and writing to the same device on the same bus channel.

Other Thoughts: I spent several weeks researching netbooks because I wanted something small, but powerful. I know a lot of people will say I should have gone with the Alienware MX11 for what I spent on adding things to this machine, but the SSD performance is specifically part of why I'm doing this. $1k+ for that performance on an MX11...no thank you.

I've performed heavy modifications to several netbooks before this one, and I can't wait to crack this open again and go nuts. The plan is to strip down a small USB hub and my MC760 USB aircard, install these components inside the case (USB hub will be soldered to one of the existing USB ports on the inside of the unit, air card soldered to the USB hub) and run the antenna jack out by the Kensington lock and Ethernet port.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Reasonable performance vs. price. It does most of what I want. Key benefits for me: video, large storage (250GB).

Small and looks good in the living room - girlfriend has accepted it.

Cons: Runs hot as others said. Power plug is tiny and impossible to insert without a well lit view of the side of the machine.
Doesn't handle video as well as I would like - Youtube 1080p drops lots of frames (720 is fine). Local DVD playing seems to have a weird effect when the camera pans and everything is moving on the screen; its not dropping frames, but not everything on the screen seems to move at once. Not horrible, but noticable.

Slow boot from suspend to disk - might be quicker to boot from scratch.

Apps seem to take longer than I would expect to load. Disk performance seems slow, but probably no worse than other netbooks/notebooks.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a media server (music player, video player, net video streamer). Works fine for music (with external DAC). Works good with Hulu, local HD WMV files. Good for flash 720, but not for 1080p. All run via HDMI to HD TV. Netflix streaming also seems pretty smooth, although they seem to stream at lower resolution.

Also does well as an 'always on' PC in the living room for quick net searches.

I don't care about battery life, video on its own display or really general performance. Bought it for a specific function and it is doing it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Is able to run full screen flash without an issue. Peppy unit. Upgraded to 4 Gb from 2 Gb.

Cons: Keyboard is not as nice as MSI Wind12 U230-040's keyboard. Not as peppy either. To upgrade harddisk, would have to disassemble unit. Installed 2 Gb is two 1 Gb sticks.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Netbook

Pros: very lightweight, performance, and looks great.

Cons: Fingerprint magnet, charger gets really hot, and battery is not great on high performance mood.

Other Thoughts: For great performance there are two things that are a must:
-upgrade ram from 2gb to 4gb!
-change OS to 64-Bit

My pc runs at 64% memory usage with only firefox running so if you only have 2gb get ready for lag.

Also can run games a low settings like COD WaW.
