1 out of 5 eggsawful repair service and awful customer service

Pros: It is a decent computer until it fails...

Cons: Horrible repair service ... Horrible customer service ... I have a different version of this machine. I sent it to service center due to vertical streaks / lines on the screen. The computer was in mint condition before I sent it. It took them 1 month to supposedly repair the computer. When I received it I was very angry. The technician ruined the screen and super glued it together. There were glue stains everywhere. The fan didn't work. I hear a periodic clicking sound coming from the bottom of computer... It is a complete mess :( I really regret buying this computer. I regret even more sending it to the repair center. Who uses super glue to repair a computer???? A 5 years old????

Other Thoughts: Stay away from this brand if you are not ready fight for months on the phone with customer service

3 out of 5 eggsCould be MUCH better

Pros: - touchscreen
- cpu
- gpu
- light weight
- stylish

Cons: - weak gpu
- poor ventilation design = IT GETS HOT!
- cd drive
- lack of storage options

Other Thoughts: This laptop could so much better. I can clearly see where Asus clipped full corners to bring the price point down. For a bit more money I would rather see this laptop come with a 760M GPU rather than a 750M, and a 512GB SSD.

The cooling design is also an utter joke. They put the sodding air vents right behind the screen hinge and blow upward onto the touch screen. Are you fracking serious Asus? As a result it can't push away enough hot air to prevent the top of the keyboard from reaching 45 degrees Celsius hot to the touch. Internal temps have also reached as hot as 86 C as a result.

I also don't care for the CD drive. I understand that its just what all laptops have, but I rather see dual 760M SLI GUPs, or at least a second hard drive instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you were dissatisfied with the laptop and your concern regarding overheating, which is an isolated case. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3684631 on the subject line.

Pros: Touch screen

Cons: is not overclock to 3.4GHZ,, the graphics card did not work, not 1TB its 900GB,

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

It's good to know that you like the touchscreen feature. I apologize if you are experiencing issues with the graphics card. In order to resolve or improve system stability and graphics performance, please install all recommended WINDOWS Updates and upgrade to WINDOWS 8.1 before using the system. We recommend using a LAN connection to speed up the update process. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3675906 on the subject line.

5 out of 5 eggsGood laptop

Pros: Everything has worked as I wanted it to. The touchscreen is accurate and responsive, and the speakers sound decent. I haven't noticed any problems with heat.

Cons: It is fairly large and heavy.

1 out of 5 eggsCrashes with 16GB ram.

Pros: None

Cons: Crashes with 16GB of memory.
Hinge creaks.
DVDRW tray does not close properly.
Reflection on screen.
Terrible wifi range.
No excuse for not having a Hybrid drive or an MSATA port.
Came with a tonne of junkware.
Lid is fingerprint magnet.
Numerous problems with USB ports.

Other Thoughts: Brought this laptop with an intent of upgrading the RAM to 16GB and installing an SSD. Tried two brands (Patriot and Corsair) of RAM and both causes frequent BSODs and numerous errors in Memtest. Both brands of memory passes memtest and works fine when tested on other laptops. I regret buying this laptop. Will never buy Asus again.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsDecent laptop

Pros: The laptop's build is sturdy and has pretty good performance. When I bought this laptop, I was looking for a laptop with high performance, but weighs less than desktop replacements. So far, it has met my expectations.

The screen is full HD. The touchscreen feature is nice and supports multitouch.

The instant key above the top left hand corner of the keyboard is a useful feature because I can toggle it to do perform any function I want when I press it (currently have it to enable/disable touchpad).

The sound from the laptop is very nice. It also comes with a sub woofer in the box.

It has a good ventilation system, the laptop does not get hot under normal usage (not doing any graphic intense things). It only heats up when playing graphic intense games. The two fans inside blow out at the bottom and at the part where the screen is attached to the body), so the palm area never gets hot. The only part that really gets hot is the part where the screen is attached to the laptop (hinge between the keyboard and the screen).

The backlit keyboard can be adjusted to 3 levels of brightness and the color of the light is white. The light can be turned off.

Maintenance can easily be performed on the laptop. The back cover can be opened with a Torx 5 screwdriver. I was able to replace the HDD with a SSD within 5 minutes.

Very fast boot time, especially after I replaced the HDD with a SSD. The average boot time with the HDD is 12 seconds from shut down; with the SSD is the average boot time 3 seconds from shut down and 2 seconds from sleep.

Cons: The aluminum cover gets dirty easily. My fingerprints would get on the laptop every time I touch it.

All 3 USB ports are USB 3.0 ports, but don't function well with USB 3.0 devices. The port on the right side of the laptop stopped recognizing my USB 3.0 external hard disk drive after 2 months (it still works with USB 2.0 devices). The USB charger plus port disconnects every 20-30 seconds with USB 3.0 devices. It also disconnects, then reconnects a second later, every time the laptop is plugged in or unplugged (for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices). To summarize this, only one of the USB ports work flawlessly.

The wireless range of the laptop is horrible. It fails to detect the wireless signal when the wireless strength is 2/3 on the iPhone 5S. It also doesn't support wireless 5 GHz.

The speakers fail to work at startup if the volume is turned down. To solve this, the volume has to be turned up above a certain volume. Sometimes, the computer would have no sound at all (both through speakers and headphones), but after restarting, the sound comes back on (happened to me 4 times already).

The screen will dim the brightness when displaying something dark on the screen (for example, a forum with a black background), then would brighten up when switched back to a bright screen. I heard this problem is caused by Nvidia 3D graphics drivers.

The letters on the keyboard can be rubbed / scratched off. A keyboard protector his highly recommended to prevent this.

Other Thoughts: I am satisfied with the performance of this laptop.

A side note about replacing the HDD with SSD: the laptop does not come with a Windows serial key, it is embedded in the BIOS. To reinstall Windows, make sure to install the version it came with (Windows 8 with UEFI in my case). Windows should install itself without asking for a key if the correct version is used. To get a clean install of Windows 8.1 without purchasing a new key, I had to do a clean install of Windows 8, then upgrade to Wingows 8.1.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Touch screen is nice, I wasn't sure how i would feel about having a touch screen on a laptop. It is a nice added feature for when you are laying in bed or have it on your lap its more responsive than my Galaxy S4. The Touch screen compliments windows 8.1 well.
I threw a 500GB Samsung 840 Evo in when i got it. I also purchased a drive caddy and took out the optical drive and placed the hard drive that came with it in there. I am very pleased with the performance I installed Diablo III and it runs smooth for me.
I love the keyboard perfectly spaced keys and they have a nice feel to them. the back-lighting is nice when you are in a dark room and it can be adjusted.
The sound is nice, i believe it has 4 speakers on the front and it comes with a sub-woofer which is a nice added effect.
The touch pad is bar none the best I have ever used. It also imitates a touch screen sense by swiping in from the sides of the pad you can tab though windows 8 apps, and pull up the charm menu.
The manufacturing seems very solid. The brushed aluminum lid is nice, but with all laptops it smudges easily. Feels very well made and not cheap in the least bit.
You can open up the laptop fairly easily with a Torx 5 driver. Nothing is soldered onto the board looks like the ram, wireless chip, video card, hard drive, optical drives are very easy to remove / replace / upgrade.

Cons: Battery Life. It runs on average 2 - 4 hours depending on if you have it on EcoSave or Performance. But that's understandable since it is a laptop meant for performance.

Other Thoughts: Very nicely made, worth the price when comparing to similar models in the same price range. I recommend purchasing a SSD as it adds to the performance of the laptop greatly.
Be mindful when upgrading or re-installing windows. the key does not come in the box, back of the laptop or inside of the case. It is embedded into the BIOS and i had to use a third party program to retrieve it. Also it is an OEM key and you will not be able to download the retail version of windows 8 from microsoft.

4 out of 5 eggsRuns just as expected!

Pros: ASUS came through quite well with this laptop. I'm able to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 (with some expected M$ aggravation in setting up such a system).

The keyboard has a back light but it can be turned off or dimmed via software if you so desire. So far everything has run very smoothly for me. Typing on this keyboard almost feels like a mechanical keyboard.

What's awesome is that the RAM can be upgraded to 16GB and the HD or optical drive can be replaced with an SSD so this machine could last its users quite a while.

Cons: The touchpad is pretty stiff - I would recommend using an external mouse, or if it's more your style, the touchscreen.

No VGA port, instead there is a mini displayport as well as HDMI. A simple adapter will fix this issue for those of you that need VGA.

Other Thoughts: This laptop has a 15.6" screen, not 17.3" as another reviewer erroneously stated. I'm very happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Laptop

Pros: Core i7 Processor
Upgradeable to 16GB Memory
Light Weight for 17.3" Laptop
2 USB 3.0 & 2 USB 2.0

Cons: Comes with Windows 8

Other Thoughts: Overall, I really enjoyed the performance of this laptop. It's fast and very light for a 17.3" screen. The overall look is nice as well.

1 out of 5 eggsSadly dissapointed

Pros: It looked solid and nice until my son tried to use it. We are so sad, we really wanted to love this machine!

Cons: newegg sent me a defective laptop and I returned it for a refund. No problem right? Nope. Today, my RMA was processed they accepted the laptop BUT I was charged a substantial restocking fee - for a defective item! The rep stated to me that they "reset the laptop to the factory settings and now it works fine so it is not defective, This was my sons Christmas gift and it was unusable within hours of being opened. For the record I am an IT professional so this is not some minor user error or a simple fix. This is 100% a defect with this machine but now they have the money AND the returned item so I am not very hopeful for a happy resolution.

Other Thoughts: This was my first and last experience with newegg. Caveat emptor and learn from my misfortune folks. I will be telling anyone that will listen not to shop here.
