5 out of 5 eggsAsus laptop

Pros: Love the wide screen and looks great. Best laptop I ever owned

Cons: Split graphics

Other Thoughts: Not real hip on the split graphics and wish it was run full time Nvidia but im sure its due to it being a I-core. Best laptop I have ever owned.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for a Great Price

Pros: I bought this laptop just before New Year's when the price was all the way down to $547. This laptop perfectly fits everything I need for college and the games I play at a really good price. I was afraid that when I got it it wouldn't work, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see it did. Plays games like Fallout at high settings very smoothly and it is very fast overall.

Cons: The only thing I can really complain about is the keyboard, as someone else mentioned, it is French so a couple of the keys are in a different spot than you would expect which would throw me off, but I have gotten used to it now. My other complaint isn't really about the computer but about Windows 8 in general. It takes a long time for the initial updates to install, however, after all that, it runs really fine. Another problem I ran into with Windows 8 was, if you wanted to make a backup/recovery disc, you MUST do it before you make the free update to Window 8.1 because, for me, it won't recognize the disk in the drive to make a back up disc with.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a really good laptop. Nice size, charges quickly and lasts for a while, everything is clearly labeled. Definitely a good buy if you are in the market for something good for both work and play without being too expensive.

1 out of 5 eggsUnfortunate

Pros: Girlfriend enjoyed opening it for Christmas.

Cons: Did not function. Charge it up it, turned it on, and aside from a quick whirring of the harddrive, nothing. No screen, no noise. After a couple restarts got an error message that it couldn't find OS file. Went to pursue one of the on screen options and the entire screen threw up random colored pixels across the screen and froze. After a few more attempts, got into Bios. Move to scroll through options and immediately pixelated and seemed to freeze.

Usually extremely satisfied with New Egg purchases, so was very disappointed.

Will be calling support tomorrow. Almost certainly will end up shipping it back, (huge hassle to deal with). Also very disappointed in no recovery medium and a one page unclear leaflet saying recovery partition had been removed in the refurbish process. Leaflet claimed some instructions on creating recovery medium under windows 7. Source of instructions did not appear evident. Windows 8 is what is supposed to be on Laptop, so would be of dubious value even if source of instructions were clear.

Other Thoughts: Would have prefered win7 OS, incidentally.

Will update review if able and circumstances change.

3 out of 5 eggsNot very happy

Pros: Machine seems fast, and as a refurbished machine shows no sign of wear or previous use. The screen is wide and has great resolution. It was available only in brown, but that's probably what I would have chosen anyway.

Cons: I'm not especially satisfied with this computer. For one thing, it has a French keyboard, with an extra backslash key to the left of the return key. I continue to hit that key when I'm going for the return key (which is small to accommodate the extra useless key). I also have had more challenges with viruses, maleware and spyware on this computer than I've ever had, and it started right out of the gate. It makes me suspicious that it was already infected. After 2 weeks I still get popups that I don't want, and to block popups I have to block advertising that I want, and I still get popups that I don't want. I'm also continually redirected to sites that ask me to do surveys (including surveys for NewEgg).

Other Thoughts: I'm on a learning curve for Windows 8 with this machine. MS has added some senseless icons and extra steps that slow things down. Also, there's no direct way to shut down or reboot, or to find all programs. And Windows Explorer was hidden until I pinned it to the taskbar.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely amazing, and great price!

Pros: I'll Start by saying this is a top of the line laptop.

Everything I do on it runs smoothly, opens quickly, and the system never bogs down with all the RAM it has.

I was blown away with how loud the speakers are. They are slightly washed out sounding, but I find myself not using my external mini speaker nearly as much as I thought that I would.

The touchpad is huge, and actually not that uncomfortable for gaming on.

Asus also includes their app Smart Gesture, It's really nice and works very well. It also supports up to 5 fingers and it's very sensitive, I have no idea what you would do with five fingers though.

One Finger
Select
Activate
Drag

Two Fingers
Right Click
Scroll
Zoom
Rotate (only works with pictures as far as I know)

3 Fingers
Swipe left and right for back and forward
Swipe up to basically alt+tab
Swipe down the show desktop, and again to go back to the windows you were just using

The screen is bright and white levels are pretty spot on, my screen was a tad on the warm side out of the box.

Wi-fi range works better than my phones, and Bluetooth operates with very little to no lag.

The laptop is also very quiet, and the fan does a very good job at cooling when it needs to.
That being said the laptop does get very hot when playing games (like all laptops really) but when you're just browsing the internet watching videos (or writing Newegg reviews) the laptop stays at 45 to 55 C. Playing games 65 to 80 C that's definitely on the warm side. Maybe there's a way to boost the fan speed... regardless you might want to think about a cooler tray for the laptop to sit on.

This laptop plays everything! I'm currently playing Bioshock infinite (mid low settings) and I'm almost always above 40fps (it does slow down when new areas load)
Other games like TF2 CS:S CS:GO all play perfectly on high settings. RIFT the MMO also plays pretty good on lower settings, as long as you have the shadows turned low or off it's pretty much an average of 25fps Dwarf fortress also plays very good on this laptop because of it's full keyboard layout. The last fortress I was playing had 70 or so dwarves on a slightly small than default embark. It was probably playing on average about 35-45 fps.

The palm area is made of aluminum and is pretty much always cool to the touch.

This laptop has a ton of storage space, and the HDD performs very speedy for being 5400RPM There's also a ton of RAM and it's also very fast MaxMem test 18.6GB/s

Cons: Not much to say.

It's pretty hot when playing games.

The screen is kinda washed out, and needs adjusting. If you never play games you might not notice, but when I first played CS:S pretty much all the white in the maps were blending in really badly.

In windows 8 there's an annoying feature that's turned on by default. It's a touch delay and stops you from clicking with the touchpad after you've clicked a key on the keyboard.
You can easily disable this by sliding the mouse to the top right, go to settings > Change PC Settings > PC and Devices > Mouse and Touchpad > under Touchpad, make sure the setting is No delay (always on)
Once you change that you'll be able to play games with the touchpad. :)

The battery life is kinda all over the place. I know that when I'm playing games I shouldn't expect more that about 1hr 45min - 3hr 30min, that's fine, that's what I get.

Sometimes with regular use I might drop %20 in less that 15min when watching a video. Other times It'll last a lot longer, like the other day I watched Porco Rosso which is about 90min, it only dropped %26
I'm not all that unhappy with the battery life, it's just strange how inconsistent it can be.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for $535, refurbished and on sale from $750 There really isn't a better laptop out there for the price.
