3 out of 5 eggsNot so great

Pros: It's still working and not broken. Fast laptop compared to my Dell Inspiron 1420.

Cons: I think there is something wrong with the Monitor panel for this laptop because the colors don't match up with other Desktop computer monitors.

I was creating a Mockup design for a Web site in Photoshop and later found out the colors were not exactly what I had thought when I viewed the files on a desktop monitor. For example, this laptop monitor showed a background to be purple but when I view it on the desktop monitor, it's actually a bright pink color. I've tried calibrating the dedicated graphics card to no avail.

My old Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop monitor was better then this.

Other Thoughts: I can't do any Photoshop/HTML designs on this monitor because the colors are not showing up correctly. If there is a fix for this issue please let me know.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat all-around laptop

Pros: This laptop is powerful enough to perform all but the most demanding tasks. The addition of the Nvidia GPU is great. Unless you are doing something that demands high-performance 3D graphics, the Nvidia chipset will remain idle and the laptop will utilize the Intel HD graphics to conserve battery power. I'm pleased with the build quality.

Cons: The HDD is slow. This is to be expected for a laptop at this price range. Upgrading to an SSD is highly recommended. The touchpad is not great. The touchpad buttons are frustrating to use. It would be nice if the screen resolution was higher.

4 out of 5 eggsMid-Range laptop for the discerning Mid-Range consumer

Pros: The Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 is a laptop that doesn't excel at anything in particular. This laptop is a jack of all trades, and a master of none. If you want to game, it can hold it's on. In my personal experience this machine is capable of running games like Skyrim or Fallout: New Vegas without a hitch at high settings. (Not Ultra High, mind you.) Overall, performance is good all around. With a more-than-adequate 6 GB of ram, running at a more-than-adequate speed of 1600 Mhz, a zippy Core i5 processor, and the respectable GT 630M, this laptop is sure to at least meet your expectations.

As far as build quality, this laptop exceeded my expectations if only slightly. The case feels sturdy enough, the keyboard is comfortable and responsive and includes a full numberpad. The left shift key is smaller than the standard size, and being a seasoned typist I initially assumed this would take some getting used to, but in actuality I never once noticed the difference.

Cons: This little laptop isn't without it's flaws. Some may find the 1366x768 resolution to be a bit cramped. The touchpad isn't the best I've used to date; because the left and right buttons are physically attached to the touchpad. The touchpad also lacks a scroll bar, and I've missed it sorely. Clicking can be a bit inaccurate, and oddly enough I've noticed you can't move the cursor while holding down a keyboard key. (That would be an issue if you were using this machine for gaming, but you really should be using a mouse anyway.) Additionally, the speakers are not extremely loud, and while you can hear audio just fine in a quiet room, any other background noise will easily over power the IdeaPad Z580.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I have been very satisfied with this purchase. The cons with this laptop would have placed it at 3 eggs, if not for the fact that this laptop was so well priced. Many laptops in this price range used intel integrated graphics, and if you plan on doing any 3d gaming, intel just won't cut the mustard. Take this as a recommendation, but be forewarned, this touchpad is useful only for internet browsing, and it isn't particularly good at that.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay

Pros: Graphics card

Cons: Slow to connect to internet
Wireless range low
Touchpad is irritating
Good for nothing software included

Other Thoughts: I've owned this laptop about a month now. I replaced a 6 year old $350 HP laptop with this one which was a bit more. I read that Lenovo is one of the top laptop brands so I figured it would be a step up from my HP, but honestly I'm not all that impressed. First of all, after booting, it takes several minutes to connect to the internet...the HP always connected right away. Also, once connected, the signal is quite a bit weaker than with the HP...I get 3 maybe 4 bars even though I'm two rooms away from my router. The HP always had 5 bars...even when downstairs! Additionally, the touchpad on the Lenovo is irritating. Scrolling is difficult and it doesn't respond like (I think) it should. I have tried different customization options to no avail. My final irritation...and this really applies to most brand name computers is that they include all of this seemingly helpful software on the laptop like McAfee Internet Security, Microsoft Office, Nitro Pro, etc., but they're only trials so all they really do is bog down your system with unnecessary junk. Anyway, all in all, it's an okay computer for the price, but honestly I'm not sure there's anything special about this model other than the dedicated graphics card.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome Buy

Pros: wonderful all around laptop!!!! i really like that it has the touch button that can change the fan speed really helpful when the graphics card is running hot. dedicated graphics is a big plus and the laptop as really good sound with the Dolby home theater v4. the laptop is fast too but personally i updated my 6GB ram to 8GB duel channel and i changed the hard drive out with a SSD and bought a external encloser for the one that was in the laptop. All in all the laptop is perfect the way it is but with a little extra it can be over the top. also to open the laptop is nice too only one screw to access the ram the hard drive is mounted also by three more screws but has shock absorbing cushion all the way around it which is awesome!!!

Cons: touch pad!!!!! i truly do not like it at all especially that it is all one piece with no physical separation of the buttons !!! but i use a mouse anyways so no big deal i just disable it and not even think about it.

Other Thoughts: I suggest you upgrade the ram to 8GB duel channel and swap the hard drive to an SSD and just use the one that it comes with as and external.....Its a little costly of an upgrade but well worth it!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: USB 3, discrete video, good price point, solid build. The battery life is not bad either.

Cons: Screen is very reflective and hard to see at certain angles.

Other Thoughts: I got this for school, during the labor day sale, and am very glad I did so, besides the lack of a back lit keyboard and a non reflective screen (which you wont find for this price anyways) this was worth every bit of money I spent on it. I decided to hold off on the review until I had it for a while. I upgraded the ram to 8gb and will put a SSD into it once I see a great deal on one.
