4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: Ergonomic design, great keyboard, crisp screen, fast fingerprint scanner, fast cpu, enough ram memory but can use a little more, slower hdd but you can get a solid state drive for booting and use original for storage.

Cons: Battery life is not so great but I always have it plugged in so it doesn't bother me.

1 out of 5 eggswin 8 issues pale compared to new issues with win 8.1

Pros: at $670 is seemed a great deal. but win 8 out of the box had some issues. HP support tool recommended update to win 8.1

Cons: win 8.1 resulted in the HP support tool locking up, and the system constantly "races" burning up cpu and memory resources, slowing the computer to the point that browser pages stop working

Other Thoughts: HP support web site doesn't seem to have anything helpful for this issue.
a HP refurbished tablet i purchased had hardware issues
would not by another HP refurb product again

5 out of 5 eggsIt really is amazing

Pros: Fast, great display, touchscreen (if you're into that), decent graphics, nice keyboard, attractive metal look (if you're into that), nice speakers

Cons: GPU

Other Thoughts: When I purchased this in July, the price tag was only $600, and I felt it was a really good deal at the time. Now that it is up to $950, I know I got a good deal. I was looking for something with a more powerful graphics processor than this, but the I could not expect to purchase something with a Core i7 CPU either. It was a trade-off. I went for the more powerful processor I like to edit video, etc. Very sleek look also.

5 out of 5 eggsHP Envy Touchsmart

Pros: Love the big screen! The web pages load fast on basic internet service. I can personalize it for my needs. Pretty simple to use. I love it!

Cons: Nothing I would complain about.

Other Thoughts: I replaced my 2003 HP laptop running XP. I receive this FREE and it still works but outdated and slow with no space to upgrade it! I sure hope its replacement last as long as this one!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Bang for your buck!

Pros: -17.3" TOUCHscreen with 1920x1080 resolution!
-Intel I7 4700MQ processor
-4 USB 3.0 ports
-fingerprint scanner
-Beats Audio
-HDMI port
-Backlit keyboard
-DVD Mutli Drive

I recommended this about a month ago to a family member who runs an accounting firm and needed a new laptop. After I got a chance to check it out, I had to get one for myself.
First of all, you will not find a better bargain. Trust me, I looked based on similar criteria: 17" touchscreen that runs at 1920x1080 resolution will narrow your search results to about a handful, and this one is several hundred dollars cheaper, due to being a refurb.
The screen is gorgeous, though I did raise the saturation some to richen the colors.
The TOUCHscreen works swiftly and accurately. Given Windows 8 was designed with touch devices in mind, having a touch screen was important to me. Also, I will never be as proficient with a laptop's touchpad as I am with a mouse, so having a touchscreen is a quick way to go straight to where I want, as opposed to fumbling my cursor there with the touchpad.
On that note, the touchpad does work great.
The Beats Audio is nice. At first I wasn't impressed, then I learned that I didn't have it on. Fn key + B turns it on.
The backlit keyboard is very well lit, and the keyboard itself I'm real impressed with. It's not cramped at all. I am just as fast with this keyboard as I am my desktop's keyboard.
The 8GB of RAM is nice, and expandable to 16.
The 1TB hard drive is large, although a little slow, but easily replaceable with an SSD.
I love having 4 USB ports. In several comparable laptops (that run around $1000), you get 2 3.0 and 2 2.0. Not a real big deal but, really, how much more can it cost just to replace those 2.0 USB ports with 3.0? 3.0 is faster, and backwards compatible, so why make me have to remember which side my fast ports are on? With this laptop, they're all 3.0 so they're all fast.
The integrated graphics is the Intel 4600HD. Although it's potent for integrated graphics, don't expect todo some heavy gaming on this laptop.
The Intel I7 processor is great and helps future proof it so this laptop can hang around for awhile.

Overall, you will not find a better bang for your buck.
This laptop is awesome for the price. I'm happy with the purchase, and will continue to recommend it to others.

Cons: The colors didn't seem very vibrant, but I found the setting to increase the saturation, now I'm golden!

-After installing the updates, then the Windows 8.1 update, there was an update for the wifi adapter by Intel. It was for the Intel Proset n-2330 published 7/10/14. Once it was installed, I immediately began having trouble with my wifi. I had to connect the laptop via ethernet cable so I could surf the web and troubleshoot the problem. After trying a few things, I just used system restore to restore the laptop to right before the Intel Proset update. When it was finished, my wifi adapter worked flawlessly again. This is not a fault of the laptop, but rather a fault in Intel's new drivers. Steer clear of the Intel Proset Update published 7/10/14

Other Thoughts: Great full featured laptop!

3 out of 5 eggsno audio

Pros: Newegg shipping is always perfect! Laptop is gorgeous with the backlit keyboard!

Cons: Audio inoperable (headphone jack works though). Spent two hours with HP support from, you guessed it, India. Hard to understand but rep stated he logged a complaint into the "system" and case mgmt. will call back next day.

Other Thoughts: Will update review when issue is resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing features with such a low price

Pros: It's display is 1080P with HDMI out, and, 4 USB 3.0 ports. It has Intel Core I7 4799MQ with hyperthreading. For software programming, the "hyperthreading" makes this labtop to work like 8 cpus. THe backlighted keyboard is a nice feature. The 1TB harddrive is a little bit slow but works nicely with Window 8. The Led display is also good as compared to my old Lcd laptops.

Cons: The back plastic panel did not seat completely. when I open the box for the laptop. Four small latches need be pushed in hard for a tight fit. It looks fine after I seated the large back panel.

The onboard Intel graphiic chip is not that powerful but is adquate for programming. I can not seem to have the HDMI port to drive a 4Kx2K or a Ultra HDTV monitor. Too bad, but you really can not expect that much with such a low priced laptop.

Other Thoughts: I first updated the Window 8.0 with the HP utility program then migrated it to WIndow 8.1. The touchscreen option and the Window 8.1 makes this laptop worked great. I have to purchase a second disk adapter to add another SSD drive. The second adaptor is expensive (~$40) but it surely is worrth it.

I install Fedora 20 Uniix onto my SSD dfive and it workd fine. By the way, you have to turn on some of the old legcy options in order for the new standard BIOS to boot from dvd drive and other old operting system from the second disk drive.

Also the 1TB harddrive of this laptop is partitioned with GPT (not the old MSDOS). Youi will need a cloning software with the GPT or the large partitiona table options.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and super fast laptop

Pros: - Very fast quad-core processor and excellent RAM amount.
- Lots of storage space minus the slow HDD (5400 RPM only), still fast though. Definitely needs an SSD to really take advantage of the i7 processor.
- Awesome audio quality with Beats Audio, 4 speakers and a tiny sub-woofer!
- Great build quality, I think it's aluminum, feels solid.
- Very good 17.3 in. 1080p touch display with great colors.
- Good viewing angles, better than most laptops that aren't IPS.
- Love the backlit on the keyboard.
- I really enjoy the fingerprint reader and it works wonderfully. My wife and I can log in instantly to my session as it can be set up with up to 10 fingers.

Cons: - At first I liked the keyboard but now I am not too sure, I keep missing keys and making errors, I come from a Thinkpad laptop where the keyboard is top-notch. I wasn't expecting something better than that but at least good. This one is average. However, the quality of the keys is really good as they have a soft texture. I'm still getting used to the keyboard and I think I'm better now.
- There's dust behind the screen :(!!! about 5 or 6 pieces but one of them is 3 mm. long and does annoy me sometimes. It's still under warranty so hopefully HP can do something about that. But it won't be a big deal if it doesn't get fixed since I really am enjoying this laptop.
- Sometimes the LCD feels like it wants to shut off when I change screen brightness. When I first got it, the screen would shut off for a split second and turn on when I tilted the display, but it has stopped doing that when I updated everything. I thought it was a hardware problem but it seems software-based so far. I'll see how that goes.
- Not the best touchpad but it works fine. I think it could be bent, not sure.
- Battery life is only around 3 hours, and that's due to this laptop being used for a while I believe. I'm sure a new battery would last an hour or 2 longer.

Other Thoughts: Laptop is really good, solid, strong, love the large screen.

This refurbished laptop came with about 3 months of HDD use when I checked its life. However, the battery says that it was used for about a year, not sure what that is about.
The HDD was clicking strongly every hour or so on day 1 but after updating everything it hasn't done it since! Awesome :).

I really love this laptop, powerful processor and pretty good integrated graphics card (HD 4600).

This is a 1080p display as I noticed some were wondering if it is, and it does have a DVD burner along with 4 USB 3.0 ports (one of them can charge your smartphone faster than the others since it has a supercharge feature).

It's built solidly and works very fast. I uninstalled many bloatware that came with it and kept only some important ones from HP.

Apparently this has space for a second hard drive! I may buy a 160GB SSD in the future and put the OS on it and keep the 1TB as secondary storage for everything else.

Wireless network has been solid and can connect from pretty far.

It runs pretty quiet but the fan can get loud sometimes, especially when running graphics-intensive tasks, but it's ok! It functions great and takes the heat out quickly.
I wish the fan was in the back of the laptop so that I can place my cell next to it but I can't because of all the heat that comes out. That's fine anyways, overall this machine is a beast, it's a bit heavy but it feels solid and I like that, at least it's not a cheap plastic laptop.
