3 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet, however...

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: Fast and reliable tablet.

Cons: One problem for which I have decided to sell the tablet was its unability to save battery on standby. I made sure Wifi was off and no apps running and left it overnight. It still used 2% of the battery every hour. My other tablet used 0.1% of the battery per hour overnight. Didn't change with upgrade to android 4.3

Other Thoughts: If battery standby life is important to you, don't buy it.

2 out of 5 eggsAwful standby time

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: Good tablet overall, has wifi/gps/bluetooth and fast. Got updated to Android 4.3

Cons: Awful standby time. Gets discharged in about 4-5 days if left on standby. Some process constantly eats battery, and this happens after resetting to factory settings.

5 out of 5 eggsDell Venue 8

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: what can I say 8", 2gb ram, 16gb internal, smoking dual core cpu that keeps up 100% with a s4 snapdragon... very sturdy and well built... nice battery life...

well im a seasoned Linux and Android user. this tablet is amazing for the money. honestly its a stable and snappy as a brand new gen ipad if not more so. just as fast as my nexus 7 2013 but way less buggy.

end result if your not needing a 100% root method and custom roms this is the best budget tablet alive... I have to have root for romtoolbox pro and titanium backup... so for me root is a must have...

Cons: no proper root available yet, and probably never any roms will be available... you can root the 4.2.2 if you don't update it but even then I saw some users still couldn't get root properly... and as I said definitely no custom roms...

these aren't cons to a basic user... but they are a massive deal breaker for me, but the one I bought wasn't for me so no biggy...

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect balance of economy vs. features

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: This is a name-brand budget tablet with great features. I bought it for sub $130, so I wasn't expecting the world but got more than I bargained for.

Android OS, Jelly Bean 4.2.2 upgradeable. For CPU it uses an Intel Atom 2.0 GHz dual-core Z2580 which stays very cool and more than adequate for ordinary needs. The 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB flash memory and an external micro SD slot rounds out a pretty nifty package.

No complaints at all about the 1280 x 800 8" display. GPS with the free MapFactor app will get you to your destination. WiFi works great even with weak signals. Has Bluetooth. Responsive. Doesn't choke on multimedia.

Load data to the tablet with a USB On-The-Go (OTG) cable, and plug in multiple peripheral devices using a powered hub. When in Sleep mode, uses almost no power.

Cons: Battery life over-estimated. Depends on your brightness setting, Wifi radio and GPS usage, number of active apps. I don't expect 7-8 hours of mixed usage on a full charge.

Brightness level too high even on minimum for dark room reading (there are apps to cure this problem).

5/2 camera: not the tablet's best feature. I've shot some good, fairly sharp pics, just not reliably.

If you have naturally oily fingers like I have, the tablet lets you know right away.

Other Thoughts: The OTG cable was my first accessory purchase. The tablet "mounts" a USB flash drive through it; be sure to "unmount" it when finished: Settings/storage. Same as with an external flash card. I bought a 32 GB Class 10 ultra high speed card to facilitate processing.

Charging on AC: expect 20% per hour. Offcharge: When I forgot to turn off GPS, and in Sleep, battery depleted 75% in 14 hours; lost only 2% in 21 hours with WiFi and GPS off.

Bought Evecase screen protector for Venue 8. Easy to apply and you get 2 each of gloss and matte.

This is the perfect all-round device to lug around with me, best size for reading eBooks, for light internet browsing, map & nav, multimedia player, huge document storage and viewing capability...etc.

"XDA member has found a root method for the Venue 8 4.2.2."

4 out of 5 eggsDecent, budget Android tablet...

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: The Dell Venue 8 is a decent, budget Android tablet. It has a nice 8" IPS display, albeit not full HD (1280x800), but the colors appear accurate and bright. 2 GHz dual-core Intel Atom x86 CPU offers reasonable performance. 2 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage (expandable via the micro-SD slot). Good build quality. Ships with a nearly stock Android 4.2.2, and an Android 4.3 update is available.

Cons: - Mediocre battery life
- Not full HD (the resolution isn't terrible, but I'd prefer a higher pixel density, 1920x1200 would have been nice)
- Not as smooth as an ARM based CPU like the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (code translation from ARM to x86)
- Compatibility issues with some apps that used native code instead of the standard SDK.
- Cameras are mediocre
- GPS seems a bit wonky/inaccurate (after enabling GPS and disabling Google WiFi/network location services)

I'm really nitpicking here, because at the price I paid, it is a nice tablet. I'd just like to see Dell make some improvements to bring it closer to Nexus devices. I knew exactly what I was getting with this tablet, and I can't really complain at this price point.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to be a cheap, general-use tablet for the family (and thereby keeping the kids' hands off my wife's iPad Air). I am happy with this tablet for the price I paid (less than standard retail), despite the design compromises. I would recommend this tablet to those looking for a cheap Android tablet.

I'd like to see Dell assemble a new 8" tablet with a 1920x1200 IPS display and an ARM CPU (preferrably Qualcomm Snapdragon or the latest nVidia Tegra CPU), especially if they can keep it around $200 with similar quality. That would be the champion of budget tablets.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy!

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: Everything! Intel atom is snappy. Del has a 1 year accidental breakage warranty. Tablet is nice to hold, rubber type backing. Screen is nice. I cannot say enough good things about it.

Cons: Its not an Ipad......

Other Thoughts: I like this tablet. If you are searching for a good android device at a low price this is it.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Decent Indeed

This review is from: Dell Venue 8 - Intel Atom Z2580 Dual Core 2GB RAM 16GB Flash 8.0" Tablet Android 4.2, Black Color (Ven8-1999BLK)

Pros: + A "larger" screen (i.e., not the normal 7-inch); it's funny how a 1/7 increase gives such a larger viewing area.

+ Higher resolultion; after all, the only reason anyone every bought a tablet was for the screen, and this is fairly high-resolution.

+ Unblemished Android; Dell hasn't given this version any bloatware or new GUI elements I can find.

+ Boatloads of RAM; at 2GB, absolutely great for this price-band.

Cons: - A weak audio-out signal means that you actually get worse audio by using external (battery-powered) speakers than the internal speaker.

- Root is unavailable; that this is an x86 system, and that the legal status of "rooting" tablets is really rather unfriendly at the moment, means that I wouldn't be able to find any convenient root-kits as for (say) a Motorola smartphone. Not that I looked, of course!

- No Flash; being an un-rooted Android device, it doesn't have Adobe Flash-player, which means that things like Amzn. Prm. Inst. Vid. are unavailable to me.

Other Thoughts: All in all, a thoroughly decent little tablet.

It's consistently been quite "snappy" -- a happy combination of 2GB of RAM and a dual-core x86 processor.

Coupled with Wireless-N Wifi adapter and a nicely-clear display, it makes watching Netflix &c. a breeze.
