1 out of 5 eggsLemon

Pros: Decent speed, adequate screen, decent run time on battery, nice color

Cons: Came with wireless chip that would not work with standard drivers. Find large section describing problem and workarounds on Lenovo forum. Lenovo never addressed the problem. After much research found a driver which would work though would always get message that wireless would not work when booting. Touchpad varied from needing considerable force to work to moving quickly with the slightest touch frequently causing troubles when typing shortly after warranty was out the two tabs associated with the touchpad quit working now file system is corrupt and laptop refuses to restore OS also refuses to read or rather boot from CDs to reinstall the operating system.

Other Thoughts: Lenovo support is like dealing with that infamous giant cable company

4 out of 5 eggsGood but Caveats

Pros: Good LCD screen LED backlight, decent brightness/average view angle. Keyboard is pretty good. Lenovo has a site forum for help.

Cons: WARNING: Lenovo's official method (on Win 8 models) to make a restore USB thumb drive (you can't make restore DVDs) DOES NOT WORK, it's a known problem, check the forums. If you buy this, you need to hassle with Lenovo to get restore disks BEFORE warranty goes out.

Touchpad is a PITA with the charms bar appearing unless you swipe from WAY inside the pad, very aggrivating.

It's a bulky product, but its cheap.

Other Thoughts: Lenovo blew it on the restore procedure, warning!

5 out of 5 eggsMy New Lenovo

Pros: -Fully Windows 7 Compatible
-Plays Minecraft on default settings perfectly (Much better Than I Expected.
-Touchpad on mine works better than expected
-Can play Age of Empires 3 on Max graphics settings with no AA
-So far battery life is good
-Does not get terribly hot like some laptops I have owned

Cons: -Integrated Processor struggles with anything above Low on Saints Row 3, but that was expected
-Windows 8, it was terrible
-The bottom cover on this laptop, does not allow access for heatsink or heatsink fan removal.
-The oddball 20v power adapter?
-Bios is easy to get to but I really dont think a button on the case is needed to access it, there was nothing wrong with the old way of getting into a computers bios.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded from an HP Laptop with a 460 m i5 processor and 8GB memory. This new laptop runs amazingly fast compared to the old one.

4 out of 5 eggslenovo notebook G580

Pros: This was my son's (13th) birthday gift. For his first new notebook it was a good choice, I know it's a basic machine, but it can handle daily tasks. The price was good, save about fifty bucks and free shipping.

Cons: Ok I know it had windows 8 on it. The thing is there is no freebees with windows 8. You basically have to buy everything from Microsoft to go along with windows 8. Lenovo don't even give you anything also, to me that is just being cheap. Some people would say you get what you pay for, but as software/shareware goes it was not even on this notebook. Wish it had a mic jack.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is still a pain. You will spend a good deal of time updating the software and adding the basics. Buy a wireless mouse as you will need it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: This has worked great for our small non-profit office environment. Its fairly fast, has good viewing angles and lighting on the screen and when you buy lenovo, you have a company with good tech support.

Cons: The only really con I can think of is all the bloat ware that comes pre-installed. As the dedicated tech person in the office, I did a lot of uninstalling before it went out. However, I don't figure that this is a reason to take away stars as it runs well when many of the programs are removed.

Other Thoughts: Great laptop, espicially for the price as we paid about $480 for it. excellent for home use or small office environment.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's a budget laptop

Pros: Inexpensive (got on sale)
Drivers readily available on the Lenovo website
Nice feeling keyboard
Easily opened access panel on bottom of unit
Speedy CPU

Cons: Glossy finish shows every fingerprint
Touchpad has functionality problems
8GB maximum memory

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a replacement for my two year old Lenovo G560 which has been working OK, but I wanted something a bit faster. I had previously upgraded my G560 to 8GB RAM and a 7200 RPM 500GB drive, and I didn't want to lose that Windows install; I also really despise Windows 8. I found it very easy to open the access panel on the bottom of the unit to install an additional memory DIMM for a total of 8 GB. Just carefully remove two very very small screws, then slide the panel off. My Windows 7 hard drive went in without a hitch. The single 4GB SO-DIMM soon had a twin for a total of 8GB, which maxes out this laptop. I did have to change the BIOS from UEFI to legacy to get the hard drive to boot.

Luckily, the Lenovo website had all of the Windows 7 64-bit drivers that I needed. I pre-downloaded those on my G560 before I removed the hard drive from it so I had them all available. I upgraded the chipset first, then the video driver, then the network drivers. All in all, I believe I went through at least a dozen reboots. My Device Manager is clean now, with no unknown devices, red Xs, or exclamation points.

It didn't take very long before I realized that I was going to have a collection of fingerprints to rival what the FBI has. I also experienced issues with the touchpad that other reviewers have noted, even though I turned off all of the extra features except for vertical scroll, which I just can't seem to live without. I don't believe that this is a driver issue but rather a hardware issue. If you rely on the touchpad as your sole human interface to the laptop, you might want to look at a different brand of laptop for you to purchase.

All things considered, this laptop could get 5 eggs if it weren't for the glossy surface and the flaky touchpad.

2 out of 5 eggsTouchpad Issues

Pros: Nice computer for the price. Nice keyboard.

Cons: This G580 is a replacement of my G570. I had blue screen issues with the latter and Lenovo tortured me nearly a year while they tried just about everything under the sun to fix it. Lo and behold the replacement laptop a G580 has not be any better. The first week I had it the battery stopped charging. Now I am having trouble with the touchpad. It is supersensitive with the curser jumping all over the place while typing. Another thing it does is highlight the text I am typing and then before I know it I hit a key and it deletes the entire document. Lenovo is jacking me around again with trying to get this issue resolved. I was told turn off the scrolling and tapping. Imagine that!

3 out of 5 eggsDefective mouse buttons

Pros: Great price, USB 3.0, good graphics, solid performance.

Cons: The left button is weak - I have to push on the lower left corner in order to register a click. If I send it back for warranty, I will have to remove my memory upgrade, expect to lose all programs installed since purchase, and be without the laptop while waiting for repair.

Other Thoughts: I will take the laptop apart and see if the control board isn't centered correctly or if something is broken. If broken I will replace the offending part. It sucks, but it's easier to do that than to reload everything after waiting however long for a warranty repair.
