2 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: Laptop hardware is still running smoothly.

Cons: Purchased an SSD to put into this. Upon realizing that the OneKey Recovery software does not have the option to burn recovery discs, unlike the Windows 7 version which gave you the option, I discovered the only way to get recovery discs is to get them through Lenovo. Once I contacted Lenovo and getting transferred 5 times, it turns out that the discs cost $70.00. Dropped to two eggs for this. PLEASE be warned that if you're planning to put another Hard Drive in here that you'll need to be savvy enough to clone the drive, or sink another $70.00 on top of the cost. Shame on you Lenovo.

4 out of 5 eggsg505s

Pros: The Laptop was shipped quickly, as i've become used to living near one of Neweggs distribution centers. The laptop looks very nice and was very safely packaged.

Cons: The OS is pre-installed and does not come with the installation disc. This makes transferring the OS from the poor HDD to a SSD a pain. Other than that no real con outside the fairly poor HDD only having 5400 RPMs. I am currently trying to figure out how to transfer my OS to my SSD

Other Thoughts: The memory comes in one 4GB and one 2GB ddr3 sticks. There is one hard drive bay and the optical bay can be taken out and replaced with another hard drive bay if necessary.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop!

Pros: Great quality feel, faster and a semi decent low-mid gaming laptop. I was honestly impressed when I booted up a few games. All around a happy experience so far!

Cons: CD Tray is a bit flimsy, but not enough concern to lose an egg.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook for a Great Price

Pros: -The machine seems to be pretty powerful
-It is light and thin
-It seems to be very sturdy
-Lots of storage
-The integrated AMD graphics chip seems to have better driver support than Intel chips (my experience with my last notebook)
-Windows 8.1 boot time is very fast
-Wake-up time from Sleep or Hibernation is very fast
-We love the way the keyboard feels, very responsive
-Shortcut keys (F keys) are very useful and time-saving

Cons: -Comes loaded with lots of bloatware
-The edges of the machine could be rounded a bit more. It sometimes digs into your skin
-Windows 8.1 (We hate the operating system, but installed “Classic Shell” to make it act like Windows 7)
-The disk drive seems a bit flimsy
-It can get hot pretty quickly when playing games
-Battery life isn’t great (3-4 hours)
-The Capslock and Numberlock keys have a very bright light, and those keys stay when the notebook is asleep

Other Thoughts: My wife and I ordered this notebook a little over a month ago, and have been very pleased with our purchase. The machine is good for productivity, video streaming, and light to medium gaming. We both use a trackball mouse instead of the touchpad, so we haven’t had any of the problems that other have described. When typing, I’ve never accidentally bumped or touched the touchpad.

This is the best notebook PC either of us have ever had.

5 out of 5 eggsGood productivity machine.

Pros: ***Latest Bios revision came preinstalled (v2.05)***
build quality
specs (HDD size, plenty of ram, good video performance)
Light weight
Very thin.
Nice feel to keys
2 USB 3.0 ports
Plenty of processing power for my needs.
Good enough for light 3d Maya animation and light gaming (but this is a productivity machine for me, so no gaming).
Good battery life with power usage tweaks (4hr+). (3d App performance gets hit hard, though)

Cons: Somewhat slow HDD
Touch pad comes incredibly sensitive
plastic frame (Not a super big deal. Seems sturdy)
Only 1 USB 2.0 port (an issue if you're working with multiple Arduino boards)
No Touch screen or Wacom pen support (but I knew this)

Other Thoughts: This is my 4th Win 8 machine, and now the fastest one in the house. I am one of the growing few who like W8.

***You can set the touch pad sensitivity to something reasonable in its settings app (don't know why other supposedly advanced users didn't think of this). I'll have to see if Ubuntu has a similar app, but it works fine in Win8.1. Also after adjusting touch pad palm detection, I saw no typing issues at all.

I saw no CPU frequency reduction while plugged in (BIOS v2.05 installed already from factory)

I will be dual booting Ubuntu 14 and Win 8.1 x64, but first I'll replace the 1Tb drive with a 240Gb SSD. Currently, I have the factory drive in, but its too slow. I'm used to SSD so the upgrade is a must (also to get rid of all the bloat ware).

I bought this as my main dev device for Arduino/Java, c++, and Python, and also to do 3d animation in Maya (and some light photo editing in GiMP and PS), and so far its a great deal.

SketchIDE compiles my Arduino code way faster (less than half the time) than my super old Toshiba Tecra M4 (2007).

I did a test animation in Maya, and 3d performance was adequate (I'm used to graphics super computers at work, but this machine's performance is as expected) Perfect for Game quality animation, but higher quality rigs will need LOD or ways of reducing RT features so you can be productive, and not wait for frame updates. Not a big deal though. I did not see any artifacting in Maya (draw layer issues, and surface manipulation tool issues, like the sculpt tool not following the topology). However, polygon transparency buffering was sloppy, but this is expected on a general consumer grade video processor. Simple poly or Sub-d objects run fine.

This is a really good deal!

I'll update if anything changes.

4 out of 5 eggsBargain Computer

Pros: Price and overall internal components good. Audio was fine. wifi worked flawlessly on our open "N" network. Windows 8.1 navigation kinda sucks but overall good OS with no errors or issues so far. Was $80 off. 1 TB drive plenty.

Cons: Keyboard weak and can be seen visibly sinking into computer. Not enough I will send it back yet. Setup time was stupendous. DVD tray weak and floppy. I advised father who will be owner to not even use it on his lap or bed for fear of snapping it completely off. He will only be using it on nice flat table or desk now. Power plug is reversible but looks AGAIN like the weakest point of the computer. I want to cuss about laptop power connectors, there is no reason they cannot make them good. Apple is the only decent one I know in this "realm".

Other Thoughts: Lenovo adds their icons and programs on the right of taskbar until setup, then you can lock it into taskbar on the left with the rest of it's friends. Lenovo makeshift start button replacement is very nice and easy to navigate. I could grow to like it more than windows 7 start button. I am yet to crank it up to full processing power. It seems a bit laggy. I think that is due to "laptop hard drive" running at power saving 5400 rpm. Obviously doesn't compare to my other two desktops that are near instantaneous. Price point was acceptable vs quality and components. I chose lenovo over HP due to multiple nightmarish incidents with 3 of their laptops my in-laws bought.

5 out of 5 eggsReinstalled Windows 7

Pros: I have built 3 of these for different customers. I replaced the terabyte hdd with SSD and the Samsung drive was good enough to put in a caddy for a backup. Awesome machines. Not sure about it with 8.1 I have made it work for other customers, I prefer windows 7, more useable with less waste, imo.

Cons: It does not come with a windows 7 coa. grin

Other Thoughts: If you want a decent quad core in a laptop this one is great for most everything except high end gaming, but then who wants a laptop for that?

1 out of 5 eggstoucpad placement failure

Pros: The computer works, and is built tough.

Cons: Comes with windows 8 only and TONS of bloatware. This is not the main problem however. The main problem is that the touchpad is too large and is located right where the palm of your hand rests while typing. This causes the cursor to jump somewhere randomly on the screen and sabotage anything you are trying to write. I know this is not a personal problem because others who have tried my laptop ran into the same issue. This forces you to buy an external keyboard so that you can merely type. In writing this paragraph, my cursor has jumped twice.

Other Thoughts: A laptop without a built in keyboard is useless. Had the touchpad been slightly smaller, or positioned somewhere that you don't rest your palms, I might have given this computer a different rating. Also, when upgrading to windows 7 and removing the windows 8 (and all of the included BLOATWARE), you lose the function of your ethernet card, and must use only wireless internet access. This is fine if you are an at-home user, but not if you are using your ethernet port for professional reasons. For example, I can not communicate to any PLC's for my job as a control systems engineer. Don't buy this laptop unless you plan on getting an external keyboard and look forward to using windows 8
