5 out of 5 eggslenovo y50 i7 4710hq 8gb 1tb/8gb ssd

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: great value
fast for the price
plays wow @ 95fps on ultra
plays arma 3 @ 50fps on high settings
no wifi connection issues so far
runs really cool for a laptop

Cons: brushed aluminum shows every little finger print
trackpad sometimes doesnt register in games
bloatware
hard drive is slow at first until the ssd portion learns what you use most

Other Thoughts: Let me say first that i bought this laptop refurbished. Came looking brand new, looked it over really well and could not tell why it was refurbished, still have no clue. If you plan on buying this laptop for games, and just want to be able to play on the go, this laptop is for you. This is by far the best bang for your buck on the market right now. Excellent keyboard, full number pad, runs cool (which from my experience means increased life on the computer as a whole) I've had many 5+ hour gaming sessions on this since i got it, alt tabbing to monitor temperatures every time i think of it, and have no seen 70C on any cpu core yet, and havent seen anything above 67C on the graphics card. I do use a cooler master laptop cooler however which will help.

If you buy this computer i reccommend spending the extra money to get the i7, it is worth it. Twice the threads, and much more power. Don't spend $800 on something when you can spend just a little more and get something much better.

The screen is not nearly as bad as most reviews make it out to be, yes it does wash out at an angle, however if you are a normal person who actually likes to look at their screen while you use your laptop you will undoubtedly be just fine with it, or spend the extra $80 and get a replacement ips display and spend 5 minutes changing it.

The harddrive is slower, it is only 5400rpm, however it does speed up quite a bit when your ssd gets used to what you use the most, and mine is about the same speed if not faster than my desktop with a western digital 1tb 7200.

I would reccommend this laptop to anyone, experienced gamer/laptop owner or not. This is a great place to start, and with a simple swap of a hard drive, and a $90 screen you can have a laptop that will compete with those twice its price.

2 out of 5 eggsInoperable amount of bloatware.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Slick design at least. Solid feel.

Cons: So much bloatware its inoperable, like foreal. On top of the bloat ware that would take you several hours to delete, you have figure out how to work Windows 8 somehow? As a first time user of windows 8, i have got to say im incredibly impressed!; with how poorly constructed this cellphone like operating system is. Horrendously developed as what seems to be a cell phone operating system on a pretty decent piece of hardware. A laughing stock i might add. Windows 8 is a user interface, layered on top of a classic desktop theme. Every corner, Every endeavour, Every Task, of this operating system has lead to nowhere but atrocious troubleshooting and googling. Im stuck burning my mouse pad with how much i move my mouse to get a simple task done. I finally couldnt take it anymore, i had to uninstall and install Windows 7. Upon finally accessing the boot priority window, in which the user manual gave incorrect information on how to accomplish this task, i was troubled with an ERROR, EFI USB Device has been blocked by the current security policy. So i guess the bloatware has infected the entire hard drive. So you might have to buy an extra hard drive for this pc upon your purchase.

Other Thoughts: I have never been troubled with bloatware so hard that i actually considered buying a new hard drive ever in my entire life.

2 out of 5 eggsPretty meh

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Backlighting is nice, having 1TB of HDD space is also really nice.

Cons: the 860m is a pretty low end graphics card in the scheme of things, It has trouble running the latest games on good settings, it's about on par with a $200 desktop GTX 660 but it clocks slower and is a bit weaker. The i7 is only 2.40 ghz which is almost half the speed of my desktop i7 (4790k) so it's pretty slow.

Other Thoughts: I bought this so I could still game on the go but it seems that i'm going to need to upgrade to a more expensive laptop to really have fun on the go.

Overall a decent gaming laptop if your on a budget and just want to play games like Skyrim but for a more serious PC gamer, a desktop or a $1800+ laptop is what you need,

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Laptop, Has a consistent issue

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Very Slim, low profile
- Nice display (some people don't like it though)
- Good graphics card (still have trouble on some games)
- nice keyboard and lighting

Cons: * Big Issue *
About a month after I got this laptop It randomly shut off while doing nothing but a skype call. Curiously I looked into it and it was caused by a Kernel Event ID: 41 which is a Kernel Power error. This occurs at minimum twice a week and occurs randomly. It has occurred using different programs (intensive and non-intensive) such as skype, onenote, and video games. I looked online to see if other people have this issue, and MANY people have it with no fix. People have tried re-installing windows, swapping harddrive (although the bios locks the hdd?) among updates and nothing fixes it. People have mostly just returned this laptop and then bought a different one which I don't want to do because I like it but I cant risk my work getting deleted over some random shutdowns.

Other Thoughts: Pretty disappointing with Lenovo's support as well, was on the phone a couple times had to wait up to an hour and a half while some guy tried to isolate the error (41) to what I already found.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Laptop-

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I can get 75 GFLOPS out of this thing on QuikMark; without using 100% procesor power. The 860M is so awesome, Skyrim on Max 60FPS no problem. It can handle anything you throw at it. I even use it for work and it's speed has increased my productivity. Speed aside, this thing has the BEST SPEAKERS I've ever heard on a laptop. The DOLBY profile panel makes all sound jump off of your integrated OR external speakers. Super Slim and Sexy, Backlit Keyboard.

Cons: Ok. I don't like the touchpad, it needs dedicated Left Click/Right Click buttons. Also; it seems like the Wireless AC like to "power down" over time, it works fast after resetting it but an hour later all your web browsing will crawl. That may be my router though. The battery on this is not impressive, you'll be lucky to get 2-3 hours out of it just web browsing. The screen is dim, you'll need to have it maxed out 90% of the time. The graphics on this thing is weird too, I can't describe it but it's like the HD4600 is "reverse throttled" and it's like paired with the 860M they 'work together' I think. (Not SLI just, they are aware of each other) Oh, Windows 8 is horrible- immediately install Windows 7. Despite the internet, their are drivers that easily install the 860M up to FULL SPEED (10.18.10.3960). Oh, did I mention the touchpad? : ) One more thing, you cannot use an external mouse *ON* this laptop, the matte surface doesn't work well with lasers.

Other Thoughts: You know it's an amazing machine, all quirks aside. It's nice to play games basically at max settings. The keyboard is fine don't worry (I'm a programmer); it has decent tactile feedback. The Fn keys dont always work (touchpad on/off, airplane mode, ect). Oh, this thing will awake from sleep if you just open the lid- can't seem to fix that. I was barely affected by the lack of DVDROM, the USB drive was fine to install Win 7. SSHD gets 111Mb/sec on QuikMark, which isn't quite what I expected. Overall? BUY THIS THING! Lenovo did a great job! I <3 my Y50!

3 out of 5 eggsmeh

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Price
860 Maxwell processor
sleek design
dual band wireless

Cons: unless you spend extra you will get a slow 5400 rpm hard drive, and even an 8 gig ssd doesn't speed it up very much
The screen! Poor TN panel. After comparing to other laptops, its a huge downgrade. The onboard lenovo software lets you tweak the settings but even then its still limited. I had a much older lenovo y580 that had a vastly better 1080p screen and a blue ray DVD
not sure why a laptop of this size needs a separate portable dvd and not built in
lack of internal ports or access to upgrades--watch videos but screws set in at 45 degree angle so more difficult to modify. Videos show screen seems easier to replace with an ips model though

Other Thoughts: I posted an early review but feel I need to revise it based on recent events.
I am glad it has a faster gpu than my old laptop (y580) but the screen quality is a huge issue. Even in this price range.
I got it new and soon after hard drive starting acting up. Called lenovo and had to call back a few times--I just wanted them to admit the hd was defective so I could get RMA to return for warranty repairs.l Even though I'm tech proficient and ran all the software to check (hard drive getting S.M.A.R.T) errors they made me do it again.
So after more than 2 hours on 2 phone calls I finally got the RMA approval..
But its stuck at the lenovo repair facility as there is a PARTS SHORTAGE on the hard drive and it could take a while to get back in stock. I probably should have just replaced it myself with a faster SSD, but the screen...meh....not worth any more investment. Hopefully if I ever get it back I will try to sell it

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for the price, cant go wrong with it

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I did a lot of research before buying this laptop, my budget was around $1000 and this is the best bang for the buck. Nothing really comes close this laptop in terms of specs and SLIMNESS. My biggest issue was buying a slim gaming laptop. At first i was hesitant on buying this laptop because in the pictures it looked a little bulky, but to my surprise it is very slim and sleek. The laptop is fast, and has no problem with modern games, keeps cool and is quite. The screen to me is ok, i have nothing to complain about in terms of quality and colors. But everyone has their own preference. Overall i am very impressed with the laptop.

Cons: Touch bad is a little weird, very sensitive and a little unresponsive. But no one is buying a gaming laptop for the touch pad. The hard drive that comes with this laptop is a complete joke, takes forever to boot, even with the 8gb "SSD". Quality control is lacking. It took me 3 tries to get a good laptop. The first laptop came out of the scratched up so i had returned that one. The second laptop had a dead pixel in the middle of the screen, and the GPU fan was loud and clicking. The 3rd laptop worked out fine.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop from my local vendor, i had them price match it to the $979.99 price NewEgg had, i buy locally in case if there are any issues with laptops i can swap them out immediately, which in this case i had to do twice. This laptop is also very easy to work one, removing the back panel gives you access to every component, which made installing a SSD very easy. I highly recommend you install a real SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsIts not magical, but very happy with purchase

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop is a desktop replacement for me. with the decently high end GPU and CPU combo for a great price it's hard to go wrong.

The build quality is likely my favorite aspect. it doesn't feel like cheap plastic by any means to me. It's heavy in a good way, and has been dropped without any physical damage or issues.

It starts up very quick without any OS mods or reinstalls. I took some time out of box to delete all the useless junk with Revo Uninstaller.

All native drivers are in clearly labeled folders on a separate partition. This. Is. Fantastic. Huuuge kudos to Lenovo for this option. You never have to fumble for CDs or online support to find drivers for everything.

Its thin and sexy as hell. It's a laptop you'll want to show off, however...

Cons: ...It's thin and sexy as hell. By opting for less space you sacrifice many aspects that would truly make this laptop incredible. You get by with the bare essentials in terms of connectivity and battery life.

Firstly, a single HDMI out will leave you without the ability to hook up multiple monitors (assuming you aren't using UGA adapters which are a problem on their own).

There is no digital audio out. You will be stuck using a standard aux jack. The sound card is nice, though not the same compared to my old XFi card with toslink (to be expected).

Battery life is what you would expect to get out of a thin laptop harboring a lot of power. I wouldn't carry it far without the charger. For reference, you can get maybe 80 minutes of low end gaming out in the battery (LoL in this case).

No 4k output ability. My original thought was to pick the 1080p version and then just hook up a 4k monitor. Noap. HDMI out can only handle 1080P and there is no mini display.

Only one HDD port. There is no other option for expanding storage internally. Should you want a SSD in addition to HDD, you will need to buy a laptop hybrid drive (not a terrible solution honestly).

4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop with unthinkable flaw

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: 1080p 15 inch monitor is getting harder to find.

great cpu and gpu for anything you want to do.

Hands don't get hot when gaming.

Cons: LCD screen with bad viewing angles

Annoying clicking noise from fan.

Other Thoughts: This laptop felt like perfect for the first few weeks then I started noticing weird ticking sound from the laptop. I upgraded the harddrive from 1TB HD to 256 SSD as soon as I got it so it wasn't supposed to make any noise. It just recently started making this ticking noise like a watch.

A quick research told me that I'm not the only one experiencing this. This ticking noise is caused by the laptop's fan that can't decide whether to stay on or off, so it starts and stops constantly. This gets ridiculous after a little bit because a clock ticking noise would drive you insane too. Lenovo has heard about this and they have yet to come up with a solution. A few people have exchanged their laptops but without any good results.

Stay away from this laptop. The ticking noise will drive you insane.

5 out of 5 eggsLenovo Y50

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59425944) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -SSD isn't 8GB, it's around 25GB
-The screen can go from kind of bright to pretty dark, easy to use in the dark
-Looks great, keyboard and the case attract many eyes
-You can drag the left or right edge of the touch pad to use the windows 8 side bar things(like where the settings are, idk what they're called)
-Going from a desktop keyboard to this keyboard is easy because the keyboard is decent and isn't bendy or anything like that.
-Full size number pad and arrow keys
-Variable brightness on the keyboard(off,medium,full)
-Webcam takes good video/pictures
-2 USB 3.0 ports
-Gaming performance a little better than my desktop(AMD fx-6230 & 750 ti 2GB)
-Doesn't get too hot
-Power cable stays in well

Cons: -Programs it comes with take about 5 minutes to get rid of
-Fingerprints stick to this thing almost as bad as glass
-Touch pad isn't the best, but I use a mouse 90% of the time anyways
-Some weird backup button next to the power button
-Only 3 USB ports(2 3.0,1 2.0)
-Doesn't come with anything to clean fingerprints off of the computer or the screen
-Touch pad allows input from palms while typing sometimes
-

Other Thoughts: -Battery life is ok, around what you expect from a powerful laptop, it lasts around or a little over 2 hours on medium brightness without gaming
-Can't use the 860m unless it's plugged in
-Prople are complaining about the screen. The screen is fine, I haven't noticed any color issues. It produces colors way better than the TV I was using.
