2 out of 5 eggsWhat was LG thinking?

Pros: Nice size. Responsive. Does what any tablet is designed to do.

Cons: Crack the glass and here is what to expect. $215 replacement cost (Cheapest internet price). That's if you are willing to send it off for repair. Around town price to fix, $250. That's if they can find the part.

Other Thoughts: I had bought a cover for it and passed on insurance only because I have never had an issue breaking any of my devices. I didn't purchase this through Newegg but from a carrier. To carriers I say, Baaaaah! To LG I wonder what the heck they were thinking to create and selling a a device that cost near as much to fix as it does to buy a new one?

1 out of 5 eggsLoathe Detest

Pros: None

Cons: LG Software
Sensitive Screen (even my headphones wire work on the screen)

Other Thoughts: Former Nexus 7 2nd Gen user, thought I would give this tablet a try. I was really really disappointed in the software interface. I really hate this tablet, and I'm trying my best to get rid of it.

5 out of 5 eggsCM11 + LGV500 FTW!

Pros: Once you dump the stock ROM this device really flies. It is snappy and the screen looks great. The size is perfect for pretty much everything and it is super light weight.

Cons: -Back is cool looking aluminum but quite slippery, get a case.
-Price is all over the place, I got it for $250 which is the most I would pay for this tablet. Bezos has them for $269 as of this writing.
-No tablet seems to be able to run .MKV video files so I cannot watch certain files.

Other Thoughts: Good deal, I am very happy with this device. Installing CM11 + TWRP was very easy and now it is basically a Google Edition device for $100 off list price

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Tablet, Poor Service

Pros: This tablet is super fast, comes pre-loaded with a recent version of Android, and is OTA upgradeable to Android 4.4. The screen is amazingly clear and all-in-all the tablet is fairly easy to use, despite being encumbered with a 'customized' version of Android (LG's skin gives me headaches).

Cons: 2 months after purchasing, during the upgrade of my tablet to Android 4.4, it rebooted like it was supposed to, then shut off and never turned back on. I followed the troubleshooting steps available on LG's website and was forced to contact customer service/technical support to request a repair/replacement. The first agent placed me on hold for 15 minutes then disconnected the line. The second agent, after going through the SAME troubleshooting steps as are available on the website, agreed that the tablet needed to be sent in for repair. He asked me for my IMEI. I informed him that there was no IMEI on the tablet or on the original product box. He then proceeded to instruct me to enter the settings menu on my tablet to get my IMEI. Upon reminding him that the tablet would not power on, he insisted that the box or the back of the tablet must have a sticker with an IMEI. I proceeded to read every number available on the box and the back of the tablet, none of which were an IMEI. He then placed me on a 20 minute hold. Upon returning, I was informed that LG would be sending me a pre-paid shipping box to send the tablet to their repair center in Fort Worth, and that I would receive an e-mail from FedEx with a tracking number. When I DID receive an e-mail, it was from LG and it instructed me to package the tablet up and ship it to them. Confused by this, I once again contacted customer service and was assured by another LG tech that I would be receiving a box to "make sure that the tablet gets to the right place." After a week with no such box arriving, I contacted customer service again. This time I was informed that, since this was my first time sending the tablet to them for repair, I would need to pay for the shipping costs and that this is clearly outlined in the repair policy. Here I am, two weeks later, and LG has finally updated the status of my tablet to "RA closed, shipped back to customer, no tracking number available." This is by far the worst customer service experience I have ever had. This will be the very last time that I ever purchase an LG product.

Other Thoughts: Good tablet when it works. If it stops working during your warranty period but outside your return window, be prepared for a trip to Hell.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Display is superb. Tablet is very light and very fast. Speakers are in the back but sound good. The knock knock feature may seem like a small deal but it's really convenient.

Cons: Battery could be better

Other Thoughts: If the battery was a little stronger, this tablet would be flawless

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Tablet Overall

Pros: Excellent Tablet, Fast as Lighting...Able to get onto your computer wirelessly and also connect with any android phone through the Google Play Store.

Cons: Battery on the Tablet is way too small. If your on it all day you better be hooked up to an outlet.

Other Thoughts: Overall if you can live with the battery being not lasting a long time this is one of the best tablet on the market today in its size category.

5 out of 5 eggsLG G Pad 8.3

Pros: -Fast Quad-Core CPU running at 1.7 GHz
-2 GB of Ram
-Affordable Tablet
-Fits perfectly in hand
-The battery is pretty good lasting me around 9-10 hours after the KitKat android update

Cons: -None so far

Other Thoughts: I was a bit skeptical about the packaging of these tablets because there was no LG factory tape which would be labeled "Please do not accept if seal is broken", it was just grey tape. I opened it and the screen was perfectly fine and I checked for marks, a few tiny marks on the back if you focused hard enough. Now the thing that got me was that the manual was just there. Not sealed in plastic as manuals usually do. The tablet is working fantastically so far but that manual not being packaged is a bit worrying.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with KitKat 4.4 update

Pros: When I purchased this tablet it came with Android 4.2 and worked well but did have some issues. Now that I've upgraded to 4.4 I've seen definite improvements. Your mileage may vary, of course:

1. Audio Quality: Initially my speakers sounded awful at lower volumes. I was beginning to think the speakers were blown but now they sound perfect at all volume levels.
2. Lock Screen: You can add apps to the lock screen but I had a problem where multiple digital clocks would just show up. The upgrade fixed that issue.
3. Knock On: Seems more reliable now. Also, Try moving any widgets such as Weather or Google Now away from the center of the screen and reducing the size. Knock Off doesn't seem to work when tapping on a widget and some widgets have a larger footprint than what is viewable.
4. Lag: General responsiveness appears better. On 4.2, transitioning from portrait to landscape was stilted. On 4.4, there is a slight delay before the tablet reorients but the transition is smooth. Moving between apps is also better.

LG has their own app store and update center where you can get some unique themes, fonts, games, and other items. It is no where as extensive as Google's Play Store but one of the offers you get from LG is 50GB of storage from Forever. Very cool.

Cons: Yes, I do see the individual lights at the bottom of the screen when the back light is set very low. I'm not one to use my tablet in the dark so the issue doesn't bother me.
If anything, I'd say the auto-dimming feature is more of a problem since it always seems too dark for me for watching videos. But that's easily fixed by turning off that feature and upping the lighting to 80 - 85%.

Battery life on any device is always too low so it's hard to really count this as well. With light use (email, short web searches) I can go two days on a full charge. Playing games or watching movies, however, drains the battery and lasts maybe 5 to 6 hours (probably due to my keeping the backlight so bright).

LG, like most companies, provides unique add-ons to the basic Android OS. While somewhat cool, I don't use the IR remote to control my TV, nor do I use Qpair and some of the others. Again, not exactly a con since someone may find them useful. Asus, Samsung, and everyone else add different functions to their devices. The point is to pick a device that works the way you want that is within your budget and just ignore the stuff you don't use.

My one real con is that the internal memory is only 16GB. An external memory card fixes a lot of that but there are still many apps that need to be on the device. I don't have a lot of apps or pictures but I'm amazed at how quickly I've filled the internal memory. A 32GB card will be more than enough... for now.

Other Thoughts: If the over-the-air update to Kit Kat 4.4 is still not available, go to the LG website and download the PC Suite. The software will backup your tablet then install the updated OS.

Some of the problems I experienced on 4.2 may have been solved by wiping and resetting the device but the upgrade to 4.4 does have advantages.

Even though Adobe Flash is no longer supported on mobile devices many web sites still use it. One bonus of the G Pad is that unlike tablets based on the Intel Atom processor, this tablet does support Flash but you have to manually load the "Adobe Flash Player 11.1.apk" and use the Dolphin browser and Dolphin Jetpack. There are detailed instructions on the web. I found I have to clear the cache for Dolphin browser every once and a while but it is possible to watch Flash-based videos. Obviously, you need an account on many sites to watch streaming content.

Overall this is a great tablet and meets my needs perfectly. Yes, there are quirks in the LG software that you will either like or not but considering the hardware specs at the current prices, I can definitely live with it.
