5 out of 5 eggsEPSON Perfection V700

Pros: I use the scanner to digitise photographic film; 35mm, 6x 7 and 4x5. It does a really great job. The software provides enpormous control over the images if you need. The auto exposure works very well. I've gotten good results for both color negative and black and while film.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: My only very slight reservation is that while the software Epson provies for Windows is extremely powerful, it is not implemented in Linux; Epson does provide Linux software but the options are very limited in comparison to the Windows tools.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than I anticipated

Pros: I've made a couple of scans from both film and slides. In different formats (6X6 and 4X5). The image quality is superb. I bought this scanner specifically for it's film scanning capabilities. I have an all in one printer on a second system, so scanning documents was not even a worry.

I've been a serious amateur photographer taking pictures since I was 15, and that's a lot of film ago. I have never gone into digital cameras. So this scanner will allow me to bridge that gap.

If you want to scan your film images and work them in a digital editting software, this is the bomb!

Cons: Showed me how inadequate my printer is for printing photos - More money to spend I guess.

Other Thoughts: Get this of you want to archive your film images. Serious amateurs and Pros on a budget will be happy with this scanner.

4 out of 5 eggsDo yourself a favor

Pros: Scan quality is very close to dedicated film scanners at a fraction of the cost.

Cons: Slide holder is a flimsy piece of junk, i've broken off one holder tab and some of the others are looking shaky. Looking for an aftermarket replacement. I hope that the folks over at betterscanning or others can come out with a decent replacement.

Other Thoughts: DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - buy a copy of vuescan from Hamrick Software before embarking on any kind of serious scanning. You'll thank yourself!

5 out of 5 eggsOnly Option

Pros: Hardware wise, it's pretty solid. It doesn't talk back to you and it does what it's told.
Compared to the nikon coolscan 9000 this scanner worked better for me in getting through the more dense negatives. For most high end amateurs this will be the ticket for putting up your shows. I recently graduated and was used to working with a c41 printer for all of my work. But this scanner was able to alleviate that need. You can do 50x60 prints very easily with this scanner from medium to large format negatives. If your a die hard film shooter and need gear that will honor your negatives, this is it. In fact, I don't really know of any modern hardware that will scan large format negatives.

Cons: So far none. The 8x10 plastic film guide is pretty flimsy, but doesn't inhibit you from a quality scan.

Other Thoughts: These are becoming rare to get, this scanner is about the only option for most large format photographers who don't have access to higher end scanners. For a struggling medium such as film, this scanner put my mind at ease. I would love to have this upsized to 20x24 so I could scan in my c prints as well.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Outstanding scanning ability. I use this scanner daily on photos, slides and negatives. This scanner has not needed any repair in regards to its internal function.

Cons: Film holders made entirely of plastic and break easily. A problem Epson needs to address.
The glass scratches easily if not cleaned with a very soft cloth.

4 out of 5 eggsBeware the flimsy film holders

Pros: I bought this scanner specifically to scan about 15,000 slides and as a film scanner works brilliantly, but...

Cons: The thin hold-down clips on the film holders are a joke. After about 1,500 slides, I've already broken one of them and others are getting ready to go. At this rate, I'll need to buy 9 more holders, or enough to buy another scanner. I'm gonna try convincing Epson that this the holder should be replaced under warranty.

Pros: This scanner is an incredible piece of equipment. Scans slides, negative, transparencies, you name it... It worked fin for about a year. Unfortunately, it stopped working after around a year. It just started clicking, making noises, and flashing a red light... They make clear that "Epson is not responsible for any repair cost on units that are out of their warranty period." Regardless, this was a hardware failure after around 14 months of intermittent use.

Cons: I will never buy another Epson product again. I'm telling every business colleague I know to boycott their products. They may be the best in the business, but their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced in 20 years in the Graphic Arts field.

Epson's customer service is all based in the Philippines. The only time you speak with anyone in the U.S. is when you speak with customer relations.

My company had purchased an extended service warranty, which is not an equipment replacement, it is simply a warranty that allows you take your scanner into an "Epson service center" for them to repair. Our offices a

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb

Pros: Very good optical system, easy install, excellent scans for all media (scanning slides will need more tweaking). Out of the box, love the included Epson scanning software; Silverlight SE -- not so much (maybe, because it's "SE"). Very good value for the money.

Cons: Had to purchase VueScan to work with slides, but that's really not a con -- if you are planning to scan a lot of slides, get yourself a dedicated slide scanner.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat scans in spite of poor manufacturing

Pros: TWO primary options included for software interface (Epson Scan and Silverfast SE). Quality of scans (at least with 35mm slides and rescan of prints).

Cons: Specs found under glass on main unit - having to arrange around them until RMA is honored. Support for Vista 64 for Silverfast SE not out of the box - requires additional registration and download of latest.

Other Thoughts: I bought this after having used its predecessor (Perfection 4990) to scan 300-400 odd sized 50-60 year old negs from grandpa's old camera - with excellent results. However, the disappointment of having dust UNDER the glass has come true. We will see how Newegg responds.

2 out of 5 eggsdisingenuous service

Pros: competitive prices, customer service does usually respond eventually

Cons: unprofessional customer service responses, delayed responses which cause further delays in resolving problems with an order. strong evidence of shipping known defective merchandise

Other Thoughts: after receiving the scanner i noticed it had the same large white dust specks on the underside of the glass, which is unreachable by user, as was described in a recent online review of newegg. after getting an rma number i received no response from customer service for 3 days as to return shipping payment, causing me to have to pay to send it myself. although they ultimately agreed to reimburse me (yet to be seen) it caused a long delay further lengthened by the unexpected 3-5 day rma time they take just to process replacement orders. customer service responses were formulaic and evasive. should have simply returned it and ordered from someone else, would have a working scanner by now rather than being forced to cancel the order rather than wait 3 weeks for a hopefully working item. that, on top of user reviews of disturbing credit card mishandling makes me advise being suspicious of newegg
