2 out of 5 eggsGreat company, going bad

Pros: Looks great, sounds great, Almost love it.

Cons: !*!Software Proprietary!*!...
Creative used to be the best outshining Zune and Ipod because it was simple, well designed, compact, and would play just about anything you could throw at it. Now you have to wait for it to convert small (600mg to 900mg) avi's, for several hours if it finishes at all. This is disappointing seeing as how this is their lowest priced unit.

Other Thoughts: Creative if you read this, please do not succumb to that software propriatary JUNK. We end users enjoy the freedom of cut and paste without the hassle of converting our movies again, we already did it once. Please in the future get rid of this and go back to the way things were, the way you did things that made your company better than Apple and Microsoft.

2 out of 5 eggsSeems Perfect, buuuuuut

Pros: Looks great, sleek, light, nice display, and pretty easy and intuitive interface.

For those that won't use the expanded SD/SDHC slot, it should fulfill all your needs, but most probably won't invest in this version if that's the case.

The main attraction for me was all of the above, and especially the chance to have a pretty decent size library with a 32 gig SDHC card!

Cons: EVERYTIME you turn the player on and you want to access music from your memory card. You have to rebuild the music library. I'm not sure how long for smaller cards are, and it depends on the amount of folders and subfiles, but it takes about 10-15 minutes just to be able to access them.

I've been to forums, asking if there was any firmware to update this problem. Even asking if you the user wants to update their library or leave as is, and I'd understand if new songs were added, or old songs were renamed.......but its pretty annoying.

Other Thoughts: Creative Central software for loading music is okay, but it's kind of slow. And has problems creating playlists.

I haven't used media monkey, but I have seen this suggested my other zen creative mx users.

If you don't mind warming up your player for a few minutes ahead of time, then its a pretty decent player. But I have experienced lag while quickly scrolling through my songs. For the get up and go type playing, just put your favorites on the interal 8 gig.

I've never written a review, but I wanted to let know of the rebuilding library issue. It annoys me that much, and perhaps I expected too much so I'm not complaining, just informing!

I'm still using mine!

5 out of 5 eggswhat a player

Pros: good sound quality. the battery lasts about 25-30 hours of continuous play. good graphic equalizer (custom). price.

Cons: no case. ear buds too large for small ears.

Other Thoughts: i got this for my wife as she recuperated from a broken foot. we had another brand that had a batter life of about 5-5 1/2 hours continuous play and discharged rapidly when not used.

i got her some different ear buds that fit in the ear canal and set the graphic equalizer for her tonight. as soon as i switched to the custom eq she remarked that the sound was much better. the controls were set flat.

i pumped up the bass and again she remarked that it was better still. i finished setting the controls and she was happy as a clam.

one last thought. run the battery down by playing the stock tunes. if you don't you wont get the battery life, because the battery is almost fully charged.

1 out of 5 eggsinterface software fails test

Pros: Hardware works well, if you can get your files into it.

Cons: This device comes with Creative Centrale Software for interface. This software is broken; it behaves like a beta test version; hangs frequently, locks up the Zen device. Tried it on 3 separate machines with the same result.

Other Thoughts: Creative used a different interface for the previous version of Zen, called Zen Media Explorer. It plugged right into Windows Explorer and was very easy to use. Creative Centrale is finicky and fragile and should never have been released in its current state. I am disappointed that Creative traded a working interface for a broken one. The interface screen is "more cool" to look at though... :-)

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it!

Pros: Plays mp3/4s, records audio, radio, pics as described

Cons: The MX is not an upgrade. It is a DOWNGRADE from the normal Zen. Here are the downsides: 1. Made in China as opposed to Malaysia. 2. Only plays terrible .cmv video files. These are slow to encode, huge, and only used by Creative. Google it. 3. Does not have the on/off/hold slider button on the side. This is not integrated into the front buttons (I bought two. One has a broken on/off button) 4. The player creates files for its own reference and indexes. I haven't played around long enough to see all the downsides, but it seems inefficient.

Other Thoughts: Buy a Zen. Forget the Zen MX. I own both. If your only interested in audio they are similar. But, if you want to use the video, even a little bit, buy just a Zen. NO MX!

3 out of 5 eggsno WMV or AVI

Pros: Nice screen, good audio. Memory card seems to work well in the menu. Nice product except...

Cons: Very, VERY dissapointed in Creative requiring propriatary cmv codec conversion for the MX version, primarily because their converter to cmv sucks so bad. Unfortunately when I bought this, New Egg didn't make the lack of wmv and avi codecs clear in the specs on the MX that the regular(and older model) ZEN had included in its abilities. They seem to have corrected this info now... too late for me I guess, but New Egg is still awsome!

Other Thoughts: I have used many Creative products in the past but I am not likely to buy a Creative product ever again after this rather cheapshot marketing tactic. If Creative would do a hardware/software update and replace the missing wmv or avi codecs, or at least improve their poor software transfer times to cmv, I might reconsider... but with the direction Creative's marketing tactics seem to be headed... Im not holding my breath on that one.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Creative MP3 Player Yet

Pros: Does not freeze like older models.
Battery Life Lasts for Few Days of Non-Stop Playing.
Decent Rez Screen.
Clean Design with easy to use buttons.
Intuitive GUI.
Radio is awesome.

Cons: Scratches Easy. Short/Useless USB Cord. Software could be a little less buggy. Would me nice if the back light shutoff without having to lock the player.

Other Thoughts: I have owned several creative players (Zen Extra, Zen V+, Mosaic and now this) and this is the best one yet. Does not freeze like the old Zen V+. Does photos with a decent rez screen and movies better then the Zen V+ (Still wish it had a OLED screen cause those are awesome). Only complaint would be that it scratches easily but I have a shrink wrap machine that makes a nice quick case (and all the buttons are flat and can easily be shrinked wrapped with out causing problems like other MP3 Players). Other than being a little bulky for todays technology I say its better then a Ipod because you dont need Itunes and it has more features (Radio). I have not used the SD card expansion to see if it works better then the old Zen.

Side Note: Avoid the special eddition ones because they lack radios. This one however DOES have a radio.

5 out of 5 eggsFor the price you can't beat this quality

Pros: I've owned a previous model of this (the 2 GB one), and it still works fine to this day! I've used it almost every day for a year. I used it with the SENNHEISER HD202 and I feel like a freakin DJ. lol

Cons: I think because I used it while working in a freezer months ago it now has this weird problem were it pauses the soundtrack sometime. It doesn't do this alot and Im still able to enjoy the music. Maybe if I upgrade the firmware then it won't do this or it could also be the mp3 file. Or maybe even all of the above!

Other Thoughts: SUPER VALUE ALERT: Buy this with the SENNHEISER HD202 from newegg, and you won't be disappointed!
